In a German fable, Ostara (the ancient Germanic goddess of the Spring) transformed a bird into a hare. The hare responded by laying colored eggs for her festival celebrating the arrival of Spring.

Best of luck finding all of the eggs you've hidden, folks!

Fun fact:  I just got back from 2+ weeks in Germany, and discovered that the Easter Bunny is brown there.  And he doesn't wear clothes.

Is it anthropomorphized like it is in the US? If so that's disturbing!
