Quotef that story is true, it reinforces what a lot of us thought about the NBA clouding DJ's game this past year

it is a true story i was standing right next to him when it happened

ZiggysFryBoy

got a text message from my sister (grad student at MU) last friday night.  "dominic james just hit on me."

Welcome to the family, son.

Oliver Lee, before his senior season got caught forging a check, IIRC, (or fraudulent use of a credit card, perhaps). He had to apologize before one of the games to the fans. As a 4th year communications major, his speech was, um, less than stellar.

QuoteTownsend is also a good one

I know this is getting OT but...
I'd always heard about Townsend being a great guy. As an MU employee this year, he played intramural basketball, and I saw the tail end of his championship game (which he lost to a former walk on's team--I forget who.) I was surprised to see him complaining after literally almost every play and throwing some cheap shots. I would not have expected it from a guy with a reputation like his.

Hester's Jimmy must not have been any good since he transferred anyway.

Actually, she was ok looking, but certifiably nuts.

Though, by the end of the year she looked worn out.  Take that for any meaning you want.

Tommy Brice for Coach

Thirded on the DJ a-holeness. I saw a good portion of the team at a party this year... and they all pretty much came off as nice guys, except DJ. Just the way he acts and dresses... I mean, seriously who the hell wears SUNGLASSES at a party in the DARK?

I registered for MUScoop just now solely for the purpose of responding to the jackass comments of FrennA above.  That "b****" you refer to above (Dick Shaw's girlfriend at MU) happens to be a close, personal friend of mine.  Not only are you far from the truth in characterizing her in this fashion, you are doing so on a public forum.  I feel comfortable in saying that you don't know her one iota, because if you did, you would never say such a thing about her.  I'd ask you to take this crap back.  It pissed me off to no end to read this.

Dick Shaw was a jerk, without a doubt.  My friend dumped his ass her senior year (he had already graduated and was just hanging around MU that year).  She told me at the time it was the best thing she'd ever done (dumping him), and I have to say, I agree.

Having said all this, I do find it a little uncomfortable that everyone is talking about all these ex-players' foibles and bad personalities in gorey detail on a public message board.  How does this build up the Marquette program????  If recruits or parents of recruits read this, what will they think????

Well, if they're smart people (of course they are...), they'll probably think "Wow, decades of good basketball, and a whole forum can only come up with about 10 'bad seeds' that have gone there.  Heck, even half of those were just cocky.  Sounds like a good school for myself/my kid" :)

Glad you registered vike - too bad it was only because someone ticked you off :(

Supposedly James Matthews spit on Novak during practice and that was one of the reasons he ended up leaving Marquette, but this has never been substantiatied and could just be a rumor that floated around.

The story I heard was he punched Brian Wardle during a scrimmage.

This stuff is like the telephone game anyway.

77ncaachamps

I think talking about this stuff is straight up sideline humor. During the season, it's all game, all the time here.

Since it's the off-season, we're just reminiscing about our run-ins with or stories about players. I'm not endorsing that what everyone is saying is 100% factual, but some of them - both the true and possibly fabricated - are hilarious to read.

No, Viking, this is not going to help recruiting as much as the hours after an MU loss when board members chew out Crean, players, etc. It's the summer time (read: dead time) and it's freaking hot to be inside reading MUScoop...so it'd better be darn entertaining or informative!

Welcome to the boards!  :D

Welcome, Viking.  While I agree with  you for the most part, calling Dick Shaw a jerk on a public MU basketball forum is just plain hypocritical.  Do as I say, not as I do?

ecompt

Nice to see you, Viking. You could almost put up with Shaw being a jerk if he had any talent whatsoever...but he didn't.

Lets see...JS was a close personal friend, while DS was a jerk...hmmm I smell a little jealousy.

BTW I would agree JS wasn't a b***h but maybe those that got that impression did so b/c a) she was hanging out with a jerk or b) she was a Res Life chick and everyone knows 95% of Res Life people can be tools (their mission is to stop MU kids from drinking, whereas MU is a drinking school.

PS...Should we be throwing a parade that someone from Scout is on this renegade board?  We're so lucky.

"Lets see...JS was a close personal friend, while DS was a jerk...hmmm I smell a little jealousy."

Nope.  Happily married to the girl I was dating when Dick's old girlfriend and I were MU buds.  And I didn't say "was" a close, personal friend, I said "is."

She didn't care if her residents drank, just like most RA's didn't.

Whatever, dude.  Just defending the honor of my friend.

SoCal...I realize that it was hypocritical to knock Shaw and then mention how talking about MU bad boys can't help Marquette.  Obviously, I realized this as I was typing it, as I also typed "Having said this..."  It was more of a rhetorical question about the value of these sorts of discussions on a public forum that the parents of recruits read (some religiously).  What I'm especially irritated with are comments about current players like the ones about DJ getting beer spilled in his face, and recent players, like the ODB story.  These stories have potential for some backlash, and even if the backlash is minor, is it worth it if it at all harms a recruit's perception of the program or if a current player gets pissed off about it?  What's the saying?  Discretion is the better part of valor?

Admittedly, I wrote my initial post in anger, as my friend was being called a b****, which is completely uncalled for and untrue and more specifically, does not belong on a message board like this.  It pissed me off to no end to read that, and I felt the need to defend her.

You know what?  I was going to close with a comment about the genesis of your prediction contest, but I'll refrain, discretion being the better part of valor and all.

Todd was a nice guy in my experience, just as long as their wasn't an opportunity of getting some on the line.  He was dating a friend of mine for a couple of years during his playing days, but I do know that he was dating at least 4 other girls at the same time.  She would complain all the time about how he was with these other girls but didn't do anything about it.  Must be nice to be that popular. ;)  In the end though he hung out with us every once in a while and was a funny, nice guy.  Who knows, these guys are always in the lime light so every "bad" thing gets amplified.
"A Plan? Oh man, I hate plans. That means were gonna have to do stuff. Can't we just have a strategy......or a mission statement."

Truer words have never been spoken. I think the players are just like most of the other guys on campus. I mean, obviously they have some extra "fame" or "notoriety" because they are hoops players... but at the end of the day they are just 18-22 yr olds.

They aren't going to be perfect (we should realize that), but they also need to be good representatives of the University at all times (I hope they realize that).

The players I encountered were pretty good guys. Some were arrogant, some didn't appear to be rocket scientists, but most of them were just like other kids on campus (decent guys who sometimes act a little foolish).

I think the vast majority of players have done a good job representing MU.
