That's what WSSP personnel consider thuggish?  I was expecting something else when I opened the pic.  Instead, what jumps out is the scowl on the FrozenOne's face.
Perhaps they should be honest and have a poster with red/white team theme with actual mug shots for players from a certain team who have been charged with crimes, such as assault and battery, sexual assault, theft of video games, with BA's son microwaving a parrot with the caption "continuing the legacy"?

These guys realize it's not the official team picture right? They compared it to the Bucks one on their website, which I took to mean the one that has them sitting on the court with the coaches and everything. Well we have that one too, this is more of a marketing thing, not our "official team picture" Isn't the 76-77 picture their official team picture?

The funniest part was saying you couldn't even tell Frozena was white in the picture. Really? That's a huge reach.

Overall I think this was just a sad, sad segment. It seemed like it was lets find something about Marquette, blow it out of proportion and just rag on everything Marquette.

I can't tell he's white either.  All the dark players around him aren't obvious enough to me.  Besides, what would it even matter?  I think it is kind of comical that a low class/creditable talk show judges a school's program as a whole because of a POSTER.  Someone said it before and they're right...national championship, pride, tradition, success of the program (and the entire school/community as a whole)....how is that not working on continuing a legacy? Pride, tradition, success....something that station cannot say about themselves.

wardle2wade

It's comical that they are spewing that stuff.  It's too bad that this drivel gets on the radio.

From everything I've seen and heard, faith seems to be a big part of our team's makeup, and he's saying they like thugs on a poster? Didn't Diamond Taylor and Glover on Wiscy actually get arrested last year for burglary?

Canadian Dimes

thanks for posting the poster....wow Jimmy butler looks like a real thug!!  :)

What a bunch of a$$holes.  Poster is more than fine to me.

First thing that actaully came to mind for me was what a great tribute to frozena to have him up front with the other seniors...when in most team picture the walkons are regulated to standing in the back row with the managers.

KenoshaWarrior

Who cares if they think we are thugs.  If we win on the court does it really matter.

I wouldnt care if are team was full of former Ex-Cons and d students.  As long as they are making it rain on the court I could care less!!!!

The good news is.....That is not the case!!

Mr. Nielsen

WSSP talks about MU being a white school.

Remember when Wisconsin got in trouble about 5 years or so for a student section picture at Camp Randell and UW photo shop in a black guy, because no blacks go to the football games in UW football's student section. UW is 4 times bigger than MU.

I believe I posted this a long time ago but during the week leading up to MU's Final Four appearance in 2003, I tuned in WISN (the MU flagship station at the time) to listen to Homer thinking it would be all MU. Mr. Sparky (non athlete in the WSSP photo) was filling in for Homer and spent the majority of the program talking about the Brewers (spring training if I remember right). Only time I have ever written a complaint email to a media outlet.

Needless to say, if Mr. Sparky is involved I am not surprised that MU was not talked about in a positive light.

I caught part of the segment yesterday by chance, and I rolled my eyes a bit.  Otherwise, I don't think I wasted a second of my life fretting over the host or caller comments.  Sports radio is not the place to go for reasonably intelligent conversation on race, perceptions of the black athlete, privilege, class, or any of the other tangent topics they were fumbling through yesterday.

With that being said...message boards might be the second worst place to go for those conversations.

One last point...I think my frustration with local radio hosts is that they don't seem to know the nuances of our team/university as well as the typical MUScoop junkie like me or you.  When I look at that poster, it translates to toughness and intensity (because I've heard Buzz mention those attributes in every interview for 2 years running).  When I see Joe or Jimmy's face in that poster, it's consistent with the levity they bring to the lockeroom (which I know because I've seen every video clip on-line for at least 2 years now.)  When a caller calls our style 'streetball', we cringe b/c we see it as strategy (and we know the stats supporting Buzz's paint-touch mantra).  When they rip on Juco's, they fail to recognize Buzz's roots or affection for those guys.  When a radio caller says we're not diverse, he's making a hasty generalization (perhaps b/c he never had to take a required philosophy or reasoning class where such skills are learned).

In short, if you are an MU die hard (and you probably are if you are blowing off work or school to read this on a Friday afternoon), you'll probably never be satisfied with the depth of radio commentary on MU basketball.  WSSP or otherwise.

It seems a modern irony for people posting the written word on the internet to berate, belittle or complain about people using a  call in show , on an older medium (of the radio) to verbalize, rather than type out their opinions.
Whatever the medium, or source, opinions are like  %(%%)*&^*&^%, and everyone has one.
I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.

esotericmindguy

What's worse is Gary Ellerson spent years as a pitch man for Big Brothers/Big Sisters; an organization that is supposed to help kids/young adults realize their potential and build their futures....yet turns around and rips these kids for how they look on a poster. Someone call Don Imus.....gary's a fraud.

Here you go:

“All men dream; but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that it was vanity; but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act out their dreams with open eyes, to make it possible.” - T.E. Lawrence

Perfectly stated.

I'd also add what's frustrating is that the radio guys aren't experts on MU hoops, but somehow they want to pretend to be.

I don't expect radio hosts to be experts on every single team in the state, but they shouldn't pretend to know something and trot out tired cliches like "streetball" or "thugs".

warriors1991

I am looking forward to my daughters getting their posters at tomorrow's game.
To my school-aged kids, the guys on the team are all just that: guys on the team. They're not black or white or thugs or anything.
When they get them I know exactly what my kid's gonna say, and it's not going to have anything to do with skin color or whether they look like thugs. She's going to say "I met all those guys last summer at basketball camp! They were nice!"
WSSP are idiots. Please ignore them.

Patrick and Luczak do have the connection, but that's not how he got to WLZR.  The reason Patrick ended up where he did was because his brother Dave was the station manager at WLZR back then and it had been his idea to bring Dan onto the show.

WKLH and WLZR didn't become sister stations until 1993, four years after Patrick had already joined the show.

Thanks for correcting me...once again...   ;)

Thugs? Really?

I guess I can see where they're coming from. Frozena is a pretty threatening guy.

I think Junior is one of the "tougher" looking ones and he's from Canada.
