The only problem I have with that poster is Joe Fulce's face. What is that??? Haha.

Hey Vikings, I like what you've done with the basement.

"Lazar Hayward. The L stands for leader, and the W stands for winner, Lazar Hayward is a winner."

GGGG

My goodness...*that's* the poster they are complaining about?  Isn't getting all worked up over black guys with tats, cornrows and angry looks on their faces about 20 years old now?

Steve Czaban is awesome.  Your opinions, PRN, are wrong.

It's not even an opinion, it's a fact. Piping in a guy from Washington DC every morning to talk sports makes the station, and Milwaukee itself for listening, look like small potatoes. If you can tell me what I'm wrong about, I'm all ears. Are you saying this makes Milwaukee radio look big time?

ChicosBailBonds

First, not the image I would have chosen when I was doing the marketing there because I don't think it flows with the university's image.  Having said that, things have changed.  I don't read it as thuggery but more as intensity.  Of course, if someone wants to push an agenda, then they can make this into something else.

Now, here is some of the irony....here is the poster for their radio station

Milwaukee radio is small time.

Czaban isn't just some DC guy, when he started on Bob and Brian, he was hosting his own show for One-on-One Sports, the largest sports radio network in the country at that time.  He's the only person in history to be a host on all three of the national sports radio networks, and he's been syndicated around the country in some capacity for more than a decade.  You're not having heard of him says more about you not knowing the radio business than anything else.

Mark Patrick has been a part of the most successful syndicated morning show in radio for more than 20 years, he's had his own show on Fox Sports Radio and the MLB Radio Network, as well as working for ESPN Radio.  He's been a name in the business since the mid 1980s.

And yet there's only one station in the country paying Czaben to call into their morning show.

The only reason they got Dan Patrick for that gig is because Patrick roomed with Dave Luczak, of "Dave and Carole" WKLH fame, at the University of Dayton, but they didn't think he was right for the KLH audience, and they sent him over to LZR, which are owned by the same company.

Patrick and Luczak do have the connection, but that's not how he got to WLZR.  The reason Patrick ended up where he did was because his brother Dave was the station manager at WLZR back then and it had been his idea to bring Dan onto the show.

WKLH and WLZR didn't become sister stations until 1993, four years after Patrick had already joined the show.

These guys realize it's not the official team picture right? They compared it to the Bucks one on their website, which I took to mean the one that has them sitting on the court with the coaches and everything. Well we have that one too, this is more of a marketing thing, not our "official team picture" Isn't the 76-77 picture their official team picture?

The funniest part was saying you couldn't even tell Frozena was white in the picture. Really? That's a huge reach.

Overall I think this was just a sad, sad segment. It seemed like it was lets find something about Marquette, blow it out of proportion and just rag on everything Marquette.

mu-rara

Is that the same Sparky that was the Homer's b*tch on ISN?

KenoshaWarrior

WSSP is a Badgers station.  It caters to Waukesha and other badger hot beds.

540 is a Marquette station.  Even when homer is not on, it is much more pro marquette than WSSP is.

I liked their whole explanation on how "Diverse" the UW Madison student body is ::)  Werent they the same school that photoshopped a black kid into a picture???

ChicosBailBonds

I had to laugh at the guy talking about the fur coats from the 1976-77 team photo and arguing "where did the players get the fur coats"?

Good grief, hasn't anyone ever heard of props?  I doubt each guy owned a tux, either...let alone the classic car in the background.

Listening to this is kind of funny.  There are some valid points, don't get me wrong, but the commentary is funny.  Sparky...good Lord.  Guy was terrible with Homer and nothing has changed.

That's basically what sportstalk radio is nowadays. Pick something out about (team/player/coach/university) that you don't particularly like, blow it out of proportion and talk it to death. We're talking about WSSP because of this so they've succeeded.

Also, it's sad to say, but a picture of young, black men who are trying to look intimidating is going to make some people uncomfortable and make some people think they're a bunch of thugs. Maybe next year they'll use a "funny face" picture.

77ncaachamps

1) Aren't the players in order by seniority? Wouldn't that jive with the "Continuing Legacy" theme?

2) Isn't it also a reference to being a Jordan Brand/Wade Brand school?

Damn. Even I could figure that out.

I like the "edge" of the poster -- looks like a bunch of gritty bad asses and enforcers.

If you don't get what those WSSP douches are saying, you're not being honest. There is a certain amount of disconnect between MU's high-and-mighty ultra Catholic agenda, overly  WASPY Marquette population and the feel of this poster. Big deal. I much prefer this over a bright and smiley effort filled with Rod Grosses and Jared Lovettes. While it looks like a poster I would have expected from Cincy, I think it's awesome. They say "thugs" -- who cares? Having met more than a few of them, they seem to be a good, respectful group of kids. There's a lot of MU hate in this town. Bring it on.

>>> Small-time, big-time? Czabe is funny and interesting to me.

I love Czaben

Sparky truly has no clue what he's talking about.  As a %, Marquette is more diverse than UW-Madison....stats don't lie.  Not sure why Sparky can't understand or do a little digging.

I love the stereotype of the Marquette "rich" kids, too.  Does he not realize a huge number of students are on financial aid?  Something like 75% or whatever it is?

Seriously, this Sparky guy is so devoid of any facts it boggles the mind.

We R Final Four

Whenever I hear that Buzz is coming on WSSP I call and ask them to play the clip in which both Doug and Mike grade Buzz with an 'F' after Tyshan Taylor left.  They never play it though.  They said he was a terrible recruiter--which is funny and ironic because that has always been Buzz' strong suit.

I usually try Homer, but he won't talk about MU hoops unless you pull it out of him.  I think Homer views his position as the voice of the Warriors as a job and would rather talk for hours about the 8-12 man on the Bucks roster, not MU.

We are on the air, and we're talking about the Big Show team picture:

The picture of the Big Show cast, of a smiling black guy hanging two white guys, is a hate crime. Let's open up the phone lines...

MUEng92

Just so I understand, all 14 listeners of WSSP hate MU?

Dang, how will MU ever sellout the BC?

Except he was a gentle giant...who wouldn't have talked s**t about Marquette's "thuggish" poster. I'm still amazed at how ridiculous that segment was.

Mr. Nielsen

The first caller is a MU season-ticket holder, that doesn't like the poster.
