Based on the discussion in the New MU Court thread (https://www.muscoop.com/index.php?topic=65114.msg1579973;topicseen#new (https://www.muscoop.com/index.php?topic=65114.msg1579973;topicseen#new)), I thought it would be interesting to count how many Warriors and Golden Eagles there are on MU Scoop. Count yourself!

Marquette fan through and through first, a Warrior second. I think since we are the Golden Eagles, like it or not, MU could do a much better job with graphics, maybe a la the Kansas Jayhawk or at least a creative, stylized graphic rendition of a GE. I'm glad we do not have a mascot like Cal Tech- the Anteaters.

Yes. The majority of Gen X Marquette alumni would have been Warriors.
I'm a Golden Eagle, but speaking to Gen X, it's probably evenly split between Warriors, Golden Eagles, and the combination. Any Gen X born from 1965-71 are likely Warriors, 1972-75 are War Eagles, and 1976 or later are Golden Eagles. There will be some outliers, but probably about a 40/25/35 split or so.

Hey, if you want a HS t-shirt with "Warriors" on it (and "Jesuit" as well), I can hook you up. Although they did recently move away from the Native American imagery.
One of my poker buddies graduated in 1996, so half his time at Marquette he was a Warrior, and the other half he was a Golden Eagle.

I have avoided public discussion of this subject for years, because of what it ultimately will devolve into. No thanks. I don't recall this topic ever devolving into that.
There is nothing inherently wrong with the term "Warriors." At all. IMO there was something wrong with the use of Native imagery to go along with that nickname. Had Marquette dropped the use of such imagery earlier, they would still be Warriors today. Instead the University tried to make it "respectful" Native imagery, and it just never worked.
So they made the decision to change it. Was that because they felt that the association with the Native imagery would never go away? Was it because of a rumored deal with the Potawanomi on the Valley Fields project? Both? Someone knows....I don't...but I do know it will never go back.
And that's fine. It's just a school nickname.
That oughta get the ball rolling. Kind of a mild start, though.
Didn't the Potawatomi give us Valley Fields in exchange for changing our name from the warriors? Or is that just a rumor?

Dtd, 'Warriors' is not in and of itself racist. I miss it. When I see the old logos posted by Viper in the MU court thread, I understand why native American tribes pressured MU to move away from Warriors. Those are odious and unacceptable. Granted, MU had already moved away from them, but not far enough or fast enough. And because that imagery would always be around as long as the Warriors nickname was associated with MU, a clean break was probably the best solution.
Still, 30 years later, we have posters using this imagery as a laugh, to make a point, or as an avatar. I think the native American tribes may have had a point.
So, I miss the Warriors nickname, but every time I see the old logos, I understand why it is gone forever.

Yeah this is what I meant by "respectful Native imagery." This is way better than the Willie Wampum nonsense, and clearly Marquette tried to do something that had meaning. And I'm glad your friend has fond memories. But that was never going to be sustainable.
When they dropped Willie, and they had gone in the direction of something like Wisconsin Lutheran College has now, they will still be Warriors now.

Idk if you're serious or not on this one but they for a second tried to change to "Ultimate warriors" a play on the wrestler's logo but with an Eagle instead of the paint. It was actually a clever design paying homage to both past and present (and a wrestler) but apparently the Ultimate Warrior isn't a guy you want to pay tribute to.

Willie Wampum and the cartoons went away in 1971. Students voted it out then, of which, many who visit Scoop today. Warriors meant something to those students back then.
The name Warriors went away, despite attempts at appropriate alternatives, 23 years later, sold out by a bad president who also wanted MUBB to drop down to DIII. In addition to effing up most of the university. The tradition could and should have been maintained, and the reality is the imagery and the name had long been separated when it was dropped. Conflating the two, with almost a quarter century apart, is not really correct.
Most resistance to the switch is and continues because the tradition was sold out. No different then with the Gold fiasco or when Pilarz came around. Outreach hasn't historically been a MU strength.

Native imagery was absolutely not separated from the Warriors nickname when the latter was changed. They used it in their logo that very season.

I'm a Warrior. I suspect there were two reasons for the switch. The first is that Marquette was trying to put distance between itself and ole Willie, who was a derogatory characterture of Native American people. If I was Native American, I'd consider Willie offensive because, darn it, he was.
Second, the NCAA was cracking down on Native American Imagery. The Chief at Illinois was dispatched for the same reason and the Chief hardly was derogatory. Stanford got rid of the Indians, St. John's the Redmen etc., for largely the same reason. I still don't understand how Florida State got a pass, but they did.
At the end of the day, the Warriors name elicits fond memories of when we were really, really good. We were a different institution back then -- more gritty, probably more determined and our nasty, aggressive and successful basketball team reflected the attitude of the university community at the time. Today, I miss the Warriors but not because I miss the symbolism but because I miss the people and the times in which Marquette was "Marquette!"
Go where we think we're going this year and folks, who cares what they call us!

I've watched Yellowstone, Golden Eagles couldn't survive that violent hellscape

When MU hoists the NC flag they will be doing it as Warriors. There was something special surrounding that era of Marquette University and it will not be forgotten by me. I remember going to Marquette as a little boy and feeling that MU was special and different. Have to admit, Shaka has rekindled my love Marquette as a whole not just the basketball program. Obviously, I did not know during your time at MU, but I felt connected to you the first time we PM'd. To me and my family MU will always be the Warriors regardless of the nickname.
Totally...I can see it now. Hologram Al, Hank, Rick— Spahn, Spain and Aaron make a cameo since Milwaukee Braves influenced the initial decision to be warriors. It's going to be one hell of a party—I can picture it now

No. It's a name or, more accurately, a nickname. I thought a sultan of semantics would know that. I don't give a spit what/who the mascot is.

Sure. You've put a lot of thought into what nicknames supposedly stand for. I would hate to disrespect that by mislabeling it.

Forest Gump is the epitome of Americana film. It has every American film trope out there so I'm not sure that fits
But also this whole post is a bit... interesting...
I mean the amount of people who were warriors that'd read your urban line and jizz their pants is large but the overlap of them that also live in picturesque burbs and crap on urbs/cities is massive
Ok boomers.

I'm 75 years old - living at 18th and State doesn't make as much sense for me as it did as a 20 year old. But I still get an energy rush when I'm in New York, Chicago or Milwaukee. I think/hope the student body in general and our student athletes in particular feel the way I did at 20. I hope they're Warriors.
Re Forrest Gump, I know a lot of people loved that movie. I thought it was contrived.

Surprised there's this many pages without a Marquette Lightning reference.

Marquette is the only sporting entity that has ever had Warriors as a nickname. That's why it's not common. No one can name another team or college that has used Warriors. I don't even think a high school has ever used Warriors
