Post by: Herman Cain on June 10, 2023, 08:30:19 AM
2023 US Open at Los Angeles Country. A private course that has hosted very few professional events. The course architect has restored a very trick par 3 on 17. Could be an exciting hole down the stretch

They had a par 3 this long at Oakmont.

I'd probably use a wedge.

(But enough about my third shot on the hole. Or fourth.)

Now that they're going to "anchor sites", I'll be curious to see how many "new" venues they choose moving forward.  The only open years between now and 2040 are '31, '36 and '38 with Shinnecock almost certainly getting '36 or '38.

The Chicago area will go 30-35 years between US Opens should they not get one in that period.  I suppose going to Oakland Hills in '34 counts for the Midwest now.

Too many good venues rendered obsolete by equipment and the almighty dollar.  Really hope the USGA doesn't rule out exploring sites to host but I fear they are

I'm not wrong about Rick.  Winning is great for Team Europe.  Maybe pair him with JT.  Rick could have taken the easy way out and done the sports washing tour but instead stuck it out and worked hard to reclaim his game.  That's commendable unlike guys like FIGJAM or Brooks who completely disregards the etiquette and rules of the game.

As for LACC North, I've played it numerous times.  The USGA could have avoided their championship becoming a pitch and putt had they reigned in equipment years ago.  LACC is anything but "straightforward".  One time when I played with Johnny Miller, he shot a 62

I'm not mocking anyone.  I would always tell Ali to shut up and box.

As for LACC, I've never played the back tees.  I typically shoot in the high 70's there.  I played there with Dean Cain a month ago.

Ill admit Im surprised that Rickie has stuck around this long.  Usually his melt day is Saturday.

But tomorrow will be fun, tons of storylines.  Rickie back from the wilderness.  Rory trying to break his born-again Winless in the Majors streak.  Wyndham looking for his first.  Scottie lurking.  Even DJ isn't entirely out of it 5 back.

Speaking of fun, having major championship golf on at 9CST/10EST was pretty cool and unique.

Clark blames his late bogey and Fowler's late bogey on finishing in the dark.   IMO, it was the marine layer descending as much as the time of day, but the announcers commented on the flat light on the greens on the last few holes.   Easy to miss subtle breaks.

The penalties for being in the rough and bunkers seem to be averaging a stroke. However there doe not  seem to be many double bogey holes  . With the wide fairways , it seems like there are many opportunities for birdies with good approach shot

I think some near the top can shoot a 67 and win it.

I'll be surprised if anyone not in the top-4 wins.  Fowler hasn't had a bad stretch of golf through 54 holes and minimized any damage.  His bugaboo through the years has been avoiding others on the scorecard during tournaments.

Clark hasn't been in the heat of a moment like this yet.  Is he a Lucas Glover or one of many final pairing surprises that fades?  I'm kind of pulling for him since most fans will be cheering for Rory or Fowler.

Rory hasn't closed in a major in 9 years.  There is a lot of scar tissue.  He's been pretty consistent this week but will the wedges abandon him?

Scottie is the best of the bunch but the putter is a massive concern.  Can he make short par saves, much less birdies?

Fascinating stories abound.  Rahm bullied Brooks at Augusta, Brooks returned the favor to Viktor at Oak Hill.  Majors have been compelling so far and today sure seems to have the ingredients

Concession prices have been debated elsewhere.   Apparently, the answer to high concession prices is to have Meijer be the title sponsor of your golf tournament.
$1 bottles of water and cans of pop.  And chips, cookies, fruit.
$2 hot dogs
$3 brats/Italian sausage
$4 hamburgers
$3 Miller Lite/Coors light, etc
$4 Oberon, Two Hearted, Modelos, White Claw, etc.

Highly recommend it.  Pebble is a fantastic walk and there are many great spots to watch the action.

Everyone hits 6, 7, 17 and 18.  Behind the green at 11 is an underrated spot.  Small green that's hard to hit and requires a lot of imagination to save par if you miss.

Green by 3 is a good spot, too.  Depending where the tee box is, the shot is blind and you'll see a lot of interesting approach shots.

8th, 9th and 14th fairways are good, too

surprises me  the players take such risks approaching their ball in these situations.  they showed rahm at #16 playing touchy-feeling with his wedge when the ball clearly moved and was penalized after the fact.

there was another situation, forget who it involved.  was taking a drop on an embankment.  the ball had trouble holding it's position.  when it finely held, but very perilously, the player, it might have been wyndham, kept jagging around the ball, looking at it's position with respect to club, walking around it, etc etc   i wouldn't be anywhere near the thing until i was ready to hit it
