I went to the NCAAT rounds in DC in 2013, to the Barclays Center event in 2015 and to the NCAAT game in 2017; and we had tickets for the Charleston tourney last year but I got Covid and couldn't go. I've been to numerous road games over the years, and we usually make the trip from Charlotte to Milwaukee 1-2 times a season for home games. I think Mrs. 82 and I represent pretty well.
We hope to go to the Fort Myers event, but as of today I'm not sure we can. But if we do, Doc, it will be nice to meet you there. I'll even let you buy me a beer.
IIRC, Charleston wasn't the first one Nads said he was going to but skipped out on

I get the allure of the whole Bonita Springs / Naples area. The weather is nice when it is bad in the midwest. Good food. My understanding is the golf is good. Close to the beach and water if you are into that kind of thing.
But I also understand why people say "no thanks." It's like a big, non-descript suburb. Old Naples is a bit of an exception, but even that has changed quite a bit in the last 20 years. And is probably the least diverse place of that size I have been.
Whatever one likes I guess.

Florida as a vassal state of Spain seems more likely to spiral out of control and almost certainly end up as a kleptocracy.
There'd be a lot of autonomous warlords based on college football affiliation as well. We'd have to build a wall for sure

Great weather, clean (best air quality in the US), beautiful beaches, superb golf and fishing (of all kinds), pickleball, amazing flora and fauna, top notch restaurants, low crime (virtually no violent crime),
Yes, no skyscrapers. Yes, little diversity (the one real drawback, imo). Yes, a high % of old people. But (unlike the Midwest), mostly very active, health conscious old people. Want to sit at your computer or in front of your TV all day? Stay where you are - this place isn't for everyone.
If you like being outdoors and living an active lifestyle, though, it's hard to beat.

Awfully small nit you picked, but yes. .Not public, but if you belong to a good private club you also have reciprocity at the other top ones from May 1 through October 31. Every year (in addition to my own course) I play Royal Poinciana, Mediterra, Bay Colony, Colliers Reserve, Hole in the Wall, Hideout, Pelican Bay, Talis Park and many, many more.
My parents winter in Naples. Nice little area. Great beaches, great restaurants, an awesome zoo, some cool hiking trails (if you don't mind stepping around gators. I always enjoy my visits. Personally would never want to live there for an extended period time but see why others would.

We will likely retire to the Milwaukee area, but that isn't for quite awhile yet. Plenty of time to figure that out down the line. And don't get me wrong, I wouldn't mind spending a month or so in a place like Naples, but that's about it for me. It's just not what interests me.

There's no right or wrong answer - whatever makes one happy. And I like Milwaukee - short visit in the summer, an MU game or two in the winter.
That said, it's a place that (generally speaking) people retire FROM, not TO. Naples, OTOH....
So, back on topic, instead of a city almost 60 miles away from the tournament.
Doc Ford's Rum Bar is a solid choice for seafood and drinks. Local Florida author Randy Wayne White is the owner. There are now three locations in the area. His books are about the area in the John McDonald vein.
This is in addition to the area staples Mucky Duck and Tween Waters Inn on Captiva.

1) NO skyscrapers in Naples, but we have 'em elsewhere in Florida. Wanna see skyscrapers, drive from Miami through the Palm Beaches. They cover the waterfront. Some even don't fall down!
2) Diversity in Florida -- You're kidding right. I suspect there's more Cubans here than in Cuba. And in some places, we're Puerto Rico North. Our African American population mirrors or exceeds national levels as well.

We have some great news - our daughter, son-in-law and two grandkids just moved to Charlotte from Seattle. It's fantastic to have them here and to get to see our grandkids grow up. It's really what life is about.
But as a result, Mrs. 82 wants to stay home for Thanksgiving, and I can't really blame her. We talked my brother and sister-in-law into driving down from Philly, and it will be a whole shebang. We haven't had a big family Thanksgiving in many many years, so we're really looking forward to it.
So I'll be watching on TV and rooting for y'all to bring two wins home from Fort Myers.
My MU buddies and I are already discussing a couple of possible shorter (as in time commitment) trips to make during the season - maybe Butler, maybe Georgetown, possibly DePaul, certainly a game or two at Fiserv. I think Shaka's crew is gonna surprise some people this season.

Dano—were you on the beach? Lower floor?
I have upper floor of condo on the beach but no word as of yet.
Any idea if the campus/court was spared? Can't imagine it was.

Campus was definitely not spared. That being said I think the biggest problem will the lodging and not the arena itself.

My apologies for the confusion. The owner reached out to us for the place we were renting in Fort Myers Beach over Thanksgiving week and told us there is nothing left.
We are safe and sound in the midwest.

I just did a quick check on Marriott properties for this week. Only two available out of almost a dozen. I assume that most unavailable is due to them being damaged.
The arena itself appears to be fine, but like you said, I think it would be the lodging that is an issue. I suspect this gets canceled or moved.

Seems to me it would be difficult to move it based on availability at other venues for the duration of the event.
I would think it would need to be an on-campus facility of one of the participants. Like Georgia Tech.

While that makes sense, given the home court advantage, I wonder if they look at a third party on-campus facility like USF or UCF.
BTW, after a bit of further thought, even if hotels are habitable, they will likely be taken up by work crews and not sure the area would want tourists this soon. The infrastructure (hotels, restaurants, etc.) probably will be strained.

A good alternative might be moving the tournament to Orlando (ESPN). The Orlando Invitational doesn't start until the 24th so the Mon/Wed schedule for the Ft. Myers could work out...(unless they have a different event their those days of course)
Games are broadcast of FS1, so doubt ESPN opens their doors.
Some good news about Captiva. From the owners of 4 resorts, including the fabled Tween Waters Inn:
Dear Sanibel Captiva Beach Resorts friends and fans,
On behalf of all of our team members, we sincerely appreciate the outpouring of love and support we've received over the past several days. Thankfully, everyone is safe, secure and accounted for. To best monitor our resorts, my wife, Paige, and I remained on island during the storm. And thanks to our first responders, we were airlifted off via helicopter on Friday afternoon, while Tony and Angie Lapi were evacuated the day prior.
It's hard to fathom what's unfolded over the past days, and unimaginable how something so calm and beautiful can become so angry and destructive. During my time on island after the storm, I was able to tour our four properties by bike to witness the devastation firsthand.
Castaways and Beachview are now memories, for the most part, with many cottages completely gone. On the brighter side, 'Tween Waters Island Resort & Spa and West Wind Island Resort are remarkably in good shape. With water, power and access to the islands, we could open in a few days; unfortunately, we know the infrastructure rebuilding process will take months.
Rest assured that Sanibel Captiva Beach Resorts is ready and committed to rebuilding all of our four beach properties into a renewed, reimagined, reenergized form of themselves.
I'm amazed at the resiliency of our team. Many have experienced damage to their own homes and vehicles but continue to reach out to me to ask how they can help. The love and support from all of you and our team members are what makes Sanibel Captiva Beach Resorts so special.
We'll do our best to keep everyone updated on social media and email updates as we work through this process. This will take time, and we'll have setbacks along the way, but we'll succeed. We'll evolve. Please continue to send your love and support; it's what fuels our passion to serve and satisfy you. Thank you all.

The Weather Channel interviewed some moron who stayed on his boat in Fort Myers Harbor during the hurricane. He survived somehow, but his boat was destroyed. During his on-camera interview, he cried about how he lost literally everything, including all of his important documents, which were on the boat. Cut to Jim Cantore, who had his hands on his hips, looking down, shaking his head.

Just out of curiosity, move to where, when?
The hurricane was forecast to go up the entire west coast of Florida. It only turned right the last 24 hours or so. And the models were split that it might hit the panhandle or even Alabama.
But hey, if you can forecast the future, you would make a fortune during hurricane season.
ETA: The guy is still a moron for riding out the storm in his boat and not saving the important papers beforehand. He could have easily left to a shelter.

There were models. Drive the boat away from where the models are aiming the worst of the storm. This isn't rocket surgery.
The models showed it going up the whole west coast. Oh and many of the models were wrong too.
Again, since it isn't rocket surgery, where and when? Show your math too.

You do realize a hurricane is wider than those lines right? The seas were running 6-10 ft days before the storm hit for hundreds of miles.
But thanks for clearly demonstrating you have absolutely no clue what you are talking about.
Below is a response from FM tip off:
We are still planning on hosting the event in Fort Myers this November and we are in contact and working with local officials and our contacts to determine what is best for Fort Myers and Lee County. We will be in contact soon with updates as we learn more.
The arena is currently being used for emergency shelter.
As it should be.
There should be schools available from the tournament to play if the tournament is cancelled.
They should make a decision ASAP so schools can make other plans if they must.
I assume there are several parallel discussions happening
I am assuming they will play the tournament somewhere. As I mentioned, Georgia Tech has an on-campus arena in a large metropolitan area. If worse comes to worse, I assume they can move it there at almost the last minute.

UPDATE:
We are working with local officials to determine next steps. Everything at this point looks positive and we plan on being in Fort Myers this November but we should make an official announcement very soon.

Seriously though, I would be stunned if it took place there. But good on them for trying. I am sure the tournament is not high on city officials lists right now.

It's currently only open to residents (and utility/restoration folks). Much of the island still without power and water. Perhaps that will change in another month, but currently if you're not a resident or there to help fix the place up, don't head out!

There have been 65 cases of Vibrio vulnificus infection and 11 deaths in the state this year as of Friday, according to the Florida Department of Health, up from 34 cases and 10 deaths reported across the state in all of 2021.
Many of the infections are in Lee County. Ian made landfall as a Category 4 storm on September 28 in Lee County, which includes Fort Myers and Sanibel Island in Southwest Florida.

I've done Chris's charter twice, and he's the real deal. We've hooked hammerheads, mangrove snappers, 60+ inch tarpon, keeper cobia, etc. Chris has it really dialed in for permit too.
Chris is FMB based guide. Chris had his boat destroyed by Ian, but got "lucky" as he had a new Dorado on order that got delivered right after the storm. It's a beautiful looking boat and laid out to this second generation charter captain's exacting specifications.
If you go to his FB page there are pics of me and another MU alum hoisting fish of a lifetime from both of the trips I've done with Chris.
GO WARRIORS!!! Time to hang another banner. If we don't, clearly it will be Newsie's fault.

Looks like the pregame will be at the arena. Team heads home Wednesday night after the game. Are people staying for thanksgiving or heading out that Thursday morning to make it home for Thanksgiving Dinner?
We were thinking dinner at Cabbage Key. A little slice of old Florida.
A list of what's open in the area:

Cabbage Key -- cool place. The original Cheeseburger in Paradise!
Down in Marco Island and hitting the games tomorrow.
Hotel bar tonight was sparse but definitely a Marquette slant.
Not any of these guys in sight other than the lobby.

What's up with the staggered start times?
Just noticed that Utah/Georgia Tech is at 3 PM CST and Marquette is 4.5 hours later at 7:30 PM CST.
Is that strictly for TV?

What is the location and time of the pregame reception? Can you pay at the door? How far is it from the Sun Coast Arena?
Thanks to anyone with information!

It is now walk ins only. I understand is right outside arena
New question has arisen... can anyone confirm there are booze sales in the arena? (By booze I mean light beers).
Also remember to ID yourself as a Scooper by wearing teal

Guaranteed mu win
If GT and MU win, the championship game could be in the 80s. I hope MU has practiced their zone offense.
How's the MU turnout in Ft. Myers? Looks like a pretty small crowd in the 1st game.

Georgia Tech is probably more talented than Utah. That game was just ugly. Would be tough to lose and play the tougher team.
Losing not an option tonight though. Win, win, win.
Wrightsil OUT again today.
Not that he'd play much anyways at this point.

I'm having a bellyaching laugh.
This gonna be a blowout?
We can't even get shots off.
I think I'll take the under
Did they have any gameplan? They look completely outmatched. They are struggling to get shots off. Thankfully Mississippi State is struggling to make shots, but at least they are getting decent ones.
This has the makings of a good ole fashioned spanking.
We haven't scored in 8 minutes. That is awful. I think we might just not be good.
Hardworking, but not good.

Unfortunately, am flying back to Chicago on Wednesday for Turkey Day (no, I definitely was NOT the dude wearing the turkey flock shirt) so I won't be a the game tomorrow. Be be sure to look up Newsie, Doc and JB. They're all great folk and a lot of fun.

I think we will head over around 4p for the pregame deal again on Wednesday. The MU folks made a nice dent on the alcohol inventory at the arena
