I'm pretty sure he isn't coming here to take a step down. My guess is that staff changes just haven't been formally announced.
Already sharing how great this place will be to future players, eh?
C'mon down David and Tamar. ;D
Wow. Definitely seems like the right hire. Only time will tell and I hope we as a fanbase can be patient for a couple more years...
Can a member of the press please ask Shaka why, after being offered the job and turning it down seven years ago, it's the right move this time around? What has changed?

Wow, Dan Needles asked the question about seven years ago.

This is not a criticism. Just because it happens to be what we want to hear, doesn't mean it's not true. He seems very sincere and impressive. Yes, I'm drinking the kool-aid.

Seriously, I wonder how Symir Torrence will ever get over not being called out by Skaka at his introductory press conference. It's only been 13 days since he put his name in the transfer portal! Major slight IMO
I thought this was an excellent presser. If you don't like this guy as a human being you have some serious issues. Of course this is about basketball and Wojo is a great person in his own right, but the wisdom and honesty on every level with Shaka permeated the room. In particular his poignant words about his mother and his entire family. Serious, serious, props to Mama-Shaka because she raised her son right.
Make no mistake about it, this guy gets it. That doesn't mean it won't be a process or easy in the slightest. As Tower said we cannot get ahead ourselves as these situations often create unbridled enthusiasm. But I'll tell you this: I feel pretty damn good about the program moving forward and everything Shaka said regarding MU hoops expecatations was spot-on. Call me crazy but after 30 mins of hearing Shaka I feel better about MU basketball than I have in a very, very. long time. I feel strongly this is just the beginning but we will get there.

All snarkiness aside he carries himself well, said all the right things. Now let's see if he can get the guys to actually play aggressive defense with high energy. What happens on the court is the only measure. He certainly understands that DJ, DG and JL are the core to rebuild the team around.

Haha, agreed, such a weird comment to make. And if we are being honest, outside of those 3, how many coaches outside the Big East could name any of them. Those 3 are key pieces to have any sort of success next year, so I am glad he called them out specifically.

A couple of things that stood out to me. Please don't take these as criticisms because they aren't. I love the hire, and ecstatic to have Shaka on board.
1. If you don't know who really runs Marquette athletics, now you do. Name dropping is very important. Scholl made the hire, but the only person that truly matters has a PHD in basketball.

This was crystal clear.
On the whole, I love the hire but I'm not a big hype guy so I thought the presser was about what it should've been i.e. it confirmed that this was the right decision.
One disappointing thing is that he had plenty of opportunity to call out that Marquette has "top 10" level talent on the team and didn't do it......he may be out of touch.
I do have one very minor criticism regarding the MU beat writer. Maybe it's me but I haven't been particularly impressed with his abilities. And while it's fine if wants to wear a mask while social distancing inside, then he needs to speak up and have some conviction and or inflection in his voice. Personally, I think we can do much better and actually have in recent years. I know it's no biggie but believe we can step our game up on this front. He also appeared crazy nervous to me.

I agree... I thought he showed great media savvy in that he avoided totally answering questions he didn't want to or couldn't (i.e.: recruiting which coaches can't/shouldn't comment on until they are signed). Yet he still answered everything some and didn't avoid any questions completely. He said he didn't come 7 years ago because he felt it wasn't the right time due to the loyalty he felt to some of his VCU players at the time... good answer.
I liked how he also downplayed the questions on race and sex saying they are relevant but winning and making good decisions to help the team win are the most important things for the team and the fans.
He's off to a great start.
I wish him success. Based on his past he should represent Marquette well.
We have a great leader here and a very bright future. We'll undoubtedly have some bumps but the trajectory of today versus the past 7 years is noticeably better. Cautiously optimistic on the retention of the three main guys and recruitment to an actual system and philosophy should make us much tougher and more attractive to recruits. Great hire. Go Marquette!!
Shaka was very smooth, he was comfortable speaking publicly -- far more than, say, Lovell -- and his enthusiasm was evident. He came across as competent and intelligent, which he is.
He knew to throw out meat to the hungry masses with the many references to MU's past successes, while also focusing on what needs to get done in the present. He was careful not to state any specific goals, but let us know that getting to the Final Four is important and attainable. I thought it was significant (and smart) that he mentioned DJ, DG and JL by name, clearly letting them know that they will be prominent contributors to his program if they choose to stay. Questions about race and gender are never easy, and he answered those about as well as he could have.
Press conferences rarely "matter," and people who are comfortable in front of audiences always come out looking great, but the first one does give everybody a little sense of the person.
One would have to be Barney Buzzkill to have watched that and to not believe it was a successful introduction of Shaka to "Marquette Nation" (we have a nation?), and to not be pretty darn excited about what can be for our heroes.

Uh....yes. Lovell did not look comfortable at all, even reading.
I just finished watching.
He had good answers for everything.
Why leave Texas? Along the lines of "Going forward, Marquette is the simply best fit for my family."
7 Years ago - Along the lines "Didn't feel like the right time to move and loyalty to players."
Welcome Shaka!
Shaka said one of his goals was to hang banners. I'm too lazy to research and confirm, but wonder if he was a part of the infamous "Finished the Season #6" banner at VCU.

He's gonna haul out the Great Alaska Shootout banner out of mothballs isn't he...
Great presser.
A big takeaway for me is his desire to retain the Big 3 and also to reel Travis back on the staff. Time will tell.

Hearing him mention their names I felt like, in Shaka's mind, he already knows and envisions what he needs to do and practice with them for them to excel on the court.

Nah I wont be disappointed. I would rather be optimistic than negative. I believe there was talent on the team this year and the problem was the coach. I think a top 25 team is realistic If everything falls in place. Sometimes it doesn't take much to make a big jump, but we will see.

I'm almost 100% certain that Steele doesn't "want" to wear a mask. He does it out of respect to others.
Steele has been excellent since he took the post.
Shaka's a very impressive young man. can't wait for the season to begin. I remember Wojo's first couple years when the camera would drop in on him during timeouts and he literally barked at the players inaudibly. I replayed them to try to understand him. Never could. Its hard to understand "dog."

Marquette went all-in on Shaka. Supposedly Lovell took the recommendation of the Athletic Department over that of the Trustees. If he is wrong, it may well cost him his job.

I just watched the presser and job well done. He is correct, this MU is a basketball school, it has a storied history, it has great players from multiple era's and the goal should be winning at a high level.

Btw let's hear your prediction of how the team will do next year.
First off, I said 'sometimes' a dick not 'usually' but potato:potato. Wait till we do you.
As for next year, given what we know today, I'll go 5th in BE and bubble NCAA (play in or 10 seed). In forming the team there will be a couple "how did we lose ___", a couple "I can't believe we got ____", and more than a few "that's a solid addition", all of which will take time to gel with new teammates and coaches. This is where I land.
Knowing that during the next 6 months there will be 20 different "prediction" threads and each will be prompted by a signing, a de-commit, a coaching hire, etc. I reserve the right to adjust my prediction when more info is available.
The more pertinent question is 'what are your expectations for the program'? Here are mine
Quote from: naginiF on March 27, 2021, 07:56:35 AM
- NCAA most years with NIT on the off year: shows there is a quality product on the floor but gives room for young team/injuries/odd slump
- occasional deep run: allows for the 'crap shoot' aspect of the tourney (but whoo-boy if we get bounced the first game he's in the tourney with us this joint is gonna be LIT)
- top half of the BEast mixed with a heavy dose of top 3: we only have 3 conference championships in 30 years (1:15 in BE) so I think competing every year is a stretch
- 1 'magical' run every 8-10 years: FF or lose a heartbreaker in E8
- clean program: listed last because it is a given

If I were in charge, Wojo would've been fired after the 18-19 late season collapse/Hauser debacle. In retrospect, making the move any sooner than it was probably takes us out of the running to get our current coach, who is probably the best possible fit for this job.
I'm glad we were patient, though I damn sure didn't feel that way 2 weeks ago.

I think Nate Oats would have been our coach if we fired Wojo then.
You're probably right, and I'm fairly sure I would have been happy with that outcome.
This one feels different than what that would have been though. This is a paradigm shift hire, unlike any that MU has ever made in program history. Like Goose said, we've never gone all-in like this before. Oats would probably have been a very solid hire, I feel like this has potential to be significantly better than just solid. And two years ago, this wouldn't have happened.

I would suggest that the Kevin O'Neill hiring was as much paradigm shifting as this hire. Perhaps even moreso.
We went from hiring either internal candidates or head coaches from smaller Catholic schools to hiring the hot, young assistant from one of the best basketball programs in the country. I remember feeling very surprised by that hire at the time. It didn't seem like a very Marquette move.
I have not felt similarly about a hire until last week.

"I have a question in 9 parts. Feel free to phrase your answer in haiku style:
1. Will you be practicing slaps of five?
2. What is your username on Scoop? And your wife's?
3. What's your take on recruiting traditional players? You know, traditional?
4. What can we expect to see when TV is broadcasting your game huddles?
5. How awesome is Arby's, like really awesome, or beyond awesome?
6. When should the Scoop intelligencia get their pre-game advice to you?
7. How many years does it take to evaluate a head coach? The answer is five. So, five, right?
8. Have you ever driven an ATV, and what size karate outfit do you wear?
9. Who is evil and must be destroyed?
Gotta love Dodds... Forgets to unmute himself... Then gets one (1) question... And uses it to ask how the transfer portal works...
10. What are your thoughts on Red Delicious apples?
11. NM
12. How are your haiku writing skills?
13. Free throws ... do they matta?

COMPETE! COMPETE!! COMPETE!!!!
Incredible speech by Shaka. So easy to connect with him & could feel the emotion just underneath the words. A really good human.
Question. I haven't been to Oregon, WI but I sorta chuckled with the pronunciation, & curious... Were there any eye rolls there with the "Ore-GONE" instead of "Ore-gin"?!? Or do people from Oregon WI just not see eye to eye with people from the state?
(totally kidding btw but figured someone would know :D)

Rocky: Hello Shaka. Got to tell you I was sorry to see Wojo go. Heck I even had him as my avatar. But not to worry you are a great hire, and I am thinking about your avatar. Hair or shaved head is my decision right now.
Shaka: Who the hell is this Wojo guy I keep hearing his name?

It's pronounced differently than the state. Ore-gun (state), Ore-gAHn (town).
Sorry, my rendering of phonetics is pretty amateurish, but you should get the idea.

Ohio is filled with towns that are spelled the same as other famous places but people aggressively insist on pronunciations different than what we're all used to.
Lima (LIME-uh)
Versailles (ver-SALES)
Russia (ROO-she)
Cairo (CARE-oh)
Houston (HOUSE-tun)
Mantua (MAN-away)
Berlin (BURR-lin)
Medina (muh-DINE-uh)
Vienna (vie-ANN-uh)
And there's a bunch more.
You could have stopped at 'Ohio.'
I watched the Texas presser from 6 years ago. No mention at all about the mission of the university. Shaka has spoken at length about that at MU already, in addition to basketball itself. I believe it's how he'll recruit, coach, and serve as a spokesman while winning on the floor. Remind you old timers of anyone?
Doc seems to be right in his twitter comments. 'Perfect fit'.

Not sure about all of that, but, if Smart can win at or close to a Buzz like level, Regular Season Big Title, 3 NCAA Tourney 2nd weekends, etc...in his first five seasons at MUBB, he'll be embraced by many.
Shaka is the real deal. Marquette needed more than an experienced coach who would run a clean program. We needed a guy who understands and commits to the big picture, about what Marquette is all about. After 7 years of a guy who never truly left Duke, what a refreshing change.
Shaka will Be The Difference, aina?
I didn't realize he was a Billy Donovan assistant at some point. That's great lineage.

Thanks for this! I probs would've assumed differently if Shaka weren't so clearly far more intelligent & composed than me (that he must've pronounced in the accepted way).
I lived in west Madison for 2 years & I genuinely didn't know Oregon WI existed until Shaka's hiring...
