Ridiculously hard hit. Detroit being a hub for international flights from both Asia and Europe hurt. Covid was here long before anybody knew. And it came in on the international flights. The primaries were here on March 10 and in the weeks leading up to those primaries, there were a whole bunch of rallies. First case documented on March 10. Since then, the fit has hit the shan. Detroit is exceptionally hard hit, and it is exposing the economic inequalities that have existed forever. The economically disadvantaged African American population is getting pounded. Neighborhoods that have many houses with the water shut off. No major grocery stores close by, so most food is either got at the corner party store or by taking a bus for a 1/2 hour ride to a chain grocery. Both lead to more contamination. Many with untreated co-morbidities. Heart disease, hypertension, diabetes. Having to take a bus to a minimum wage job without health care. In other words, a perfect storm against those who have already been left behind.
That woman, Governor Gretchen, responded quickly and aggressively. Schools closed. Social distancing. Non-essential businesses closed. Gatherings larger than 10 banned. Banning driving between your home downstate and your cottage up north. Setting up field hospitals. She is acting like a stern, angry mom of teenagers. Which is OK. Up until now, most people endured it.
But it is now a study in human nature and what all of the governors are going to face going forward. Extending the shut down for another 3 weeks is causing some who have formerly backed her to start questioning. How long is long enough? Why close down access to gardening utensils in a Meijer, Target, Wal-Mart or Costco? The customers are already there for their groceries. What is an essential business? What about no-contact jobs like landscaping? What about letting some construction companies finish the already started houses enough that they don't rot in the weather? Why not let walking golfers golf? Why is a packed parking lot at Wal-Mart considered safe, but baseball practice not? What is an essential road construction project? Why can't we go to our cabin in the woods?
It will be interesting to see how this is handled. Cave to nagging or stand firm? And the sudden blowback after the isolation extension tells me that eventually society is going to accept the risk and start interacting.
Has there been blowback in Michigan? That's interesting. Most shelter in place orders seem to have been extended to May 1, and most Americans seem willing to concede that April is a lost month. But if those orders are extended past mid-May, I'm guessing people the country over will begin to grow restless.
In Chicago, "angry" Mayor Lori Lightfoot has become a meme. We'll see how funny Chicagoans think it is when the Midwest gets its first string of 70s and sunny type weather.
The blowback has begun. I don't know how organized it will become. And it may again become a Detroit vs outstate argument. Since it has been much less impactful outside of metro Detroit, the restlessness is stating in the west and north.

So, yeah, the blowback has begun.
A big issue is that people outside the cities watch news that minimizes the outbreak and is actively pushing to end the isolation.
It will get ugly in Wisconsin before too long.
Jockey, it will be the same arguments taking place on this board. Scoop is ahead of the curve.
Not in Michigan, but I've noticed the last week that parking lots at stores, and fast-food/restaurants are starting to be more packed.
2-weeks ago, a Walmart or Grocery store would have had a handful of cars in the parking lot and more employees than customers in the store. This week, places look like pre-pandemic level business. Similarly, lots of people playing basketball, or soccer/cricket in the local parks.
So people are getting antsy and starting to not comply.

I have noticed more people venturing out but way more compliance to social distancing. Case in point I just waited at our local market in a one in and one out situation—we all stood six feet apart, in masks and had a nice conversation while we waited 20 mins or so. I actually feel better going out today vs 5 weeks ago since people are all taking this seriously.
Makes me feel like a little relaxation when the time is right can work.

I've actually seen the opposite. The 1st week of the stay at home order in Wisconsin, grocery stores were packed.
Way, way fewer people when I go now. Less than a normal crowd before covid. Once people realized there weren't shortages, they respected the order.

I went today and it was actually tolerable. And the TP aisle was fully stocked. Enough to give you some hope, that.
Talked about this in other threads. Tomorrow will be the first you see of people breaking quarantine in mass to hang out.
After the initial stay at home are extended into may, and then June, you will see tons of push back and outright defiance.

I agree 100%. Not by all, but a whole lot of people will start being careless.
However I won't be one of those people. We go walking every day. We will be biking every day once the weather turns. But those are isolating activities and it is the way we will exist as long as necessary.

IMO, this is what needs to be happening everywhere. I have said elsewhere and will say it again that I believe that obtaining and processing the plasma of those who have had it and have recovered is going to be the key to finding a treatment that brings the mortality rate under 1% and allows the country to open back up to a degree of normalcy with a vaccine to come this autumn.

And this anecdote tracks with my department's own anecdotal evidence. Our total number of medical alarms is actually down compared to a year ago by 5-8%. Part of that may be due fewer traffic accidents. Part of it may be that some people don't want to go where all the sick people are.

A handful of nuts demanding the right to kill their fellow Michigan-ers isn't a trend or a movement. It's just a handful of selfish nuts.
It is breaking down along political lines here, like everywhere else and about everything else.
Massive protests in Lansing. The party begins.
tower - I see "the protest" was completely funded by Betsy DeVos (i.e. the DeVos Family Foundation) and there's photos of people in Stars & Bars Jackets walking among the cars.
Looks like a backfire?
It depends on the ultimate goal. I would be surprised if Gretchen backed down. Think strict angry mom of teenagers. Now the nagging and whining has started and that always changes the mom's mind.

Downside is that you get astro-turfing and other frenzies from both parties trying to win the state come November.

No question that these were a bunch of racist creeps. Confederate flags, Trump flags, guns, etc.
What reason, other than pure unadulterated Trump-Brand racism, would people from one of the northernmost states be parading with confederate flags?

But why not answer my question? Why were people waving confederate flags?
Because when they show up with them they aren't immediately told to leave. Because they know they need those people. So when they don't tell them to leave, they are basically saying they're okay with it.
That's why we paint them together in broad strokes. Because by not telling them to leave they are tacitly endorsing their message.
The Don't tread on me flags and the AR15s being carried on protestors backs were a nice touch, but I still will not paint with a broad brush. One of the most basic rights we have is to peacefully protest. They were exercising that right.

People wave confederate flags because it is a sign of rebellion. Are some of them racist? Of course. Are some of them "less racially sensitive" and feel that minorities are over-reacting when they see that symbol? Undoubtedly.
But over the course of my life I have met plenty of people who share that mind-set who aren't what I would describe as "racist."

And that is sort of the problem. They don't understand what that flag means to a lot of people.

I agree 1000% about the right to protest. I remember having arguments with friends when I supported Westboro Baptist Church's right to protest. The fact that they were truly reprehensible human beings was a separate issue aside from their constitutional rights.
In my original post, nowhere did I question their right to protest. I questioned why they needed racist symbols and guns. Of course, it was rhetorical. We all know why they protested the way that they did.

Statewide, the curve seems to be flattening. Locally, the cases are spiking. Meat packing plants, homeless populations, and yes, some of the protestors. The guns are meant to intimidate... to terrorize. They're a spectacle so that foolish young people can look at these guys and think how, 'badass' they look. They're a recruitment tool.
Realistically, these folks are cowards. They aren't the good guys with guns. They breed folks like Tim McVeigh, and should be ridiculed mercilessly.
Wonder whether a bunch of Black Lives Matter protesters storming a state capitol building armed with AR-15s would have been met with such restraint.
(It's a rhetorical question, obviously)

The guns are meant to intimidate... to terrorize. They're a spectacle so that foolish young people can look at these guys and think how, 'badass' they look. They're a recruitment tool.
Realistically, these folks are cowards. They aren't the good guys with guns. They breed folks like Tim McVeigh, and should be ridiculed mercilessly.

Spot on. An implied threat of violence. They were terrorists, plain and simple, and should have been treated as such.

Multiple proposals to limit the governor's power. Apparently, some people want a governor to respond to a pandemic like Snyder responded to the poison water crisis in Flint.
Maybe Flint residents should have stormed the capital carrying AR15s. File that away for next time.

The week after Valentine's day, the chief of my department (who went to MU in 83-84 but flunked out after, as he puts it after a couple of drinks 'majoring in the Avalanche') looked at the data coming in and formed a task force. He told the deputy and the others on the task force that this looks like it is going to be a problem and get your hand on all of the PPE you can. And start making plans about what we can cancel and what staffing will look like based on % of our members who have the COVID. Figure out what our policies are going to be. Start working on where we will house our members in quarantine if they don't want to quarantine at home.
Third week in February.
Chief in a medium large midwest city.
Read the data.
So they went to work. One thing about firefighters, when given a task they know how to organize, plan, acquire resources, and measure and be accountable for their outcomes.
Policies changed the first week of March, before the shutdowns. No more installing smoke detectors in people's house for them. No more multi-company training. Taking temperature each day when you get to work. Plenty of PPE. Never going outside without a mask while on duty. No more tours of the stations. No more neighborhood gatherings. Wearing additional PPE on every medical call. Embraced by our workforce. Vacations cancelled. Traveling for training cancelled. Sick leave usage dropped through the floor. City manager actually joining our morning skype meetings to commend us for how much our overtime budget has dropped over the last two months. Cleaning and disinfecting all surfaces every day. Actually put together crews to go talk to and work with the homeless about social distancing, masks, and attempting to pay more attention to hygiene. Brainstormed with local agencies to find places to get the homeless tested and placed in isolation. Tough to do because some just walk away when they are surrounded by 4 walls for too long. And when the local health department tried to shut us out of both data and testing, the chief walked in and started pounding the table and we got good data and finally got department wide testing last week.
We embraced it all. And kept fighting fires, and taking care of sick people and running on COVID patients and cleaning up car wrecks and running all of the calls we always ran.
So far, we have not had a single firefighter in my department test positive. Whole department got tested last week, 200 negatives. While our community has had a normal amount of infections and deaths, we have not had a single positive test.
I don't believe that will continue indefinitely. Eventually, the isolation is going to get to somebody who is going to go to a bar or a party and is going to get infected and bring it back to the station house. Then we will start implementing the policies and protocols that are a complete pain in the arse, but necessary.
But my point is this. I know what leadership looks like. I know what doing it right every bleeping time looks like and what it can accomplish. I know what holding myself accountable, holding my peers accountable, and having them hold me accountable. And I hold in contempt anybody trying to make excuses for lack of leadership or arguing against doing what they know in their hearts to be the right thing. I am weary of those who are all about 'me' at the expense of 'we'.
Grow the F up. This isn't over. It isn't going to be for a while. Wear your damn mask and wash your damn hands and think about the effect your laziness and narcissism can have on others.

POTUS spoke to Big Gretch today. May detour up to Midland during his state visit. Offered help from FEMA and other federal aid. Like I said, he needs Michigan. It would be political suicide to withhold federal assistance.
Northern Michigan story. Had a house rented for the week after Memorial day to go fishing, an annual event. We go again end of June. Renter called me on Monday saying he had been to his rental over the weekend and told his neighbor that we would be his first renters of the year and arriving on the 31st. Said his neighbor got in his face and berated him for 30 minutes about social irresponsibity and that Trump was going to kill us all. He was calling to apologize and tell me he was pulling the rental until things cooled down. I told him i was sorry as he has a gorgeous place on the water with ample parking for trucks n rigs n sleeps 14 and that i assume he could use the income. He apologized profusely. I found something in minutes on VRBO. Trip still a go.
There is going to be that push-pull dynamic in lots of places for a while. Mackinac Island announced that it isn't opening this weekend. A small town just north of here is having a 'freedom festival' and most of the businesses are opening up ahead of the lifting of the shelter in place order.
Polls are showing most people are afraid of hotels and airplanes. It is going to be a slow go even when everything is officially opened up.

BAY CITY, Mich. – A Michigan man devised a plan to steal a helicopter from the Coast Guard in order to attack a police station and shooting up a hospital to disrupt the power and free the coronavirus (COVID-19) patients, authorities said.
Jesse Theodore McFadden, 70, is accused of calling Arenac County dispatchers around 8 a.m. Sunday to say he was on his way to the United States Coast Guard Station in Bay City, Michigan, to steal a helicopter, according to officials.
Plan to free COVID-19 patients
McFadden told dispatchers the helicopter would further his plan to attack a police station and shoot up a hospital, court records show.
He wanted to disrupt the power to the hospital, unlock the doors and release patients under COVID-19 quarantine, officials said.

Oh, Cheeks, as with the Pritzker construction story you wrongly tried to pass off as a case of hypocrisy, what occurred here was in no way in violation of the state's orders or guidelines.
People in Michigan are allowed to boat and travel to vacation homes. Nobody is "in hot water."
And, us usual, it would be useful if you would read the links you post here.
From the story:
"NorthShore Dock subsequently said on Facebook that Mallory was respectful and understood why the company couldn't immediately get his boat in the water, the News reported."
"The governor has lifted restrictions on Michigan residents traveling to second homes or taking a road trip."
So again a non elected official did something that wasn't what the elected official encouraged, nor did it necessarily mean that the elected official was doing it themselves but people are blaming the elected official. Ok.
So, according to the business that took the call... an employee came to the owner/manager and said there was a man on hold that the O/M needed to talk to. The man on the phone asked if it would be possible to get his boat in the water before Memorial Day. The O/M said that they were three weeks behind, that there was no way he could get it done. The man on the phone asked if it mattered that he was the husband of the governor. The O/M said no and said the caller took the rejection politely and did not pursue it.
Tacky, but no scandal. And it hasn't been confirmed that the person on the phone WAS the husband of the governor or just claimed to be. But the R's will pursue it because they are desperate.
https://www.detroitnews.com/story/news/politics/2020/05/25/purported-northern-michigan-boat-request-fuels-controversy-gretchen-whitmer/5254889002/
Detroit News is the more conservative of the Detroit Papers. They quote the original facebook poster as saying the caller was respectful. And then the R politicians trying to wind it up.
Hell, the original poster even got a shot in at the governor. The boat didn't get put in.

Yes. The Gov's husband name-dropping in hopes of better/faster service is stupid, but clearly nothing wrong was done here in relation to coronavirus-related restrictions.
Efforts to paint this as the governor not abiding by her own order are plainly false.

Again, I am not cheeks.
I did not say it violated the order, why are you misrepresenting what I said? The Governors have asked people to do certain things, the politicians are doing something else. If it was not a big deal, why did the governor of Michigan address it and call out her husband for not being very funny as he was supposedly joking to get to the front of the line for the boat?
It is about optics. When a leader says please don't go to the beach and we prefer you stay at home, but your political family is going - the followup complaints by these leaders that people aren't staying at home falls on deaf ears.
These leaders are starting to lift restrictions and at the same time asking people to stay at home (but we won't enforce it). When people don't stay at home, they start wagging their finger all while their families are doing the same thing.

Interesting poll today, Tower. 37% of Michiganders think Trump treated Michigan worse than any other state in dealing with Covid. Next highest on the list was North Carolina at 14%.
Biden is leading by double digits in Michigan without lifting a finger.
FWIW, HRC was leading all the polls in Michigan by a good 6-8 pts up to the 2016 election and had like an 80% chance winning projection
Biden's takin' his shoes and socks off to count the Vid deaths. He's over a million and countin', hey?
Trump has a track record now. The undecideds and independents aren't going to think 'what the hell, he's gotta be better than Hillary' this time.
Plus, Big Gretch is still popular and DJT has said some pretty stupid stuff about Michigan the last few months.

I posted that in context of her popularity and the foolishness of attacking her.
There was an absolutely huge anti-Hillary vote in '16 that will not exist this time. One thing that Biden is is likeable. And if he does need help, there are many, many testimonials from Rs about what a great guy he is, as well.
Yes, it is early, but trump has shown no inclination to appeal to anyone but the crazies. He sounded like a madman at Mt. Rushmore. Every Biden ad should just show trump.

Some points from the joint press conference with the Michigan AG, the federal prosecutors from the east and west districts of Michigan, and the FBI agent in charge:
- They had staked out the governor's summer residence.
- They planned to blow up a bridge to delay the law enforcement response.
- The informant went to the FBI because they were planning to harm/kill law enforcement officers.
- They had purchased the bomb supplies and a really big taser.
- Their underlying fear was having to wear masks and that their guns might be taken away.
- They were going to kidnap Big Gretch and take her to Wisconsin where she would be tried for treason.
Now, Wisconsinites, where in the holy fk would they want to go in Wisconsin to attempt to try her for treason?

hell no, they're all over! Northern MI is insane right wing anti-government country. On my way Up North a few years ago we stopped at a gas station outside of Mt. Pleasant and I immediately saw Confederate Flag plates and flags flying. More Michiganders died in the Civil War than any other state and there's a huge confederate pride following there. My old middle and high school banned confederate flags on campus and the local tattoo parlor was offering free stars and bars tattoos so everyone could express their pride. In what, exactly??

Being a total cynic, has the fire department required proof of vaccination?
I am not in this field, but it strikes me as something that is bound to happen (vaccinated illness) and will be covered more frequently in the coming weeks. We have a ton of spread and know the vaccine is not 100% effective.
If the anecdote is true, it's comforting that the CDC is investigating and is on top of it in case it is caused by something that is evading vaccine protection.

We get paid for getting the shot off duty if we present our card showing that we have received both. So I am going to assume they did present proof.
There's no doubt, we'll read about dozens, hundreds of cases of people who have both shots and get COVID, since it's not 100% effective.
That will then generate more people who refuse the vaccine.
Vicious cycle.

I get that, and don't necessarily oppose the path you described.
But being vigilant doesn't have to mean a lockdown or travel ban. I'm talking about people continuing to wear masks until they're vaccinated, most people getting vaccinated as soon as they are able, employers requiring proof of vaccination to get back into offices etc. That shouldn't impose undue restrictions on business or pleasure. The key is people being reasonably sensible.

So why has Michigan's case count started to rise but Wisconsin hasn't yet seen the same? (Michigan had 5,000 new cases while Wisconsin had about 800.) New variant in Michigan? Better vaccine roll out in Wisconsin? Wisconsin has a larger peak in the fall (doubly so on a per capita basis) so there were more "fresh bodies" in Michigan?
New variant. UK Variant is very active here. Vaccine has been very organized for the most part. But not opening up to the general public until this week. Focused on seniors and essential workers.

From the Washington Post, on heightened COVID-19 concerns, especially in Michigan:
The state most responsible for such alarms right now might be Michigan. The CDC on Tuesday said Michigan led all states in new cases per 100,000 in the previous week. And hospitalizations had surged 53 percent, with 2,144 adults hospitalized, compared with a week earlier.
Cases are multiplying faster than they were last fall, when Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) instituted a "pause to save lives," with measures that included stopping in-person high school classes and banning indoor dining. That intervention prevented more than 100,000 covid cases, a University of Michigan study estimated.
No similar measures have been launched in the Wolverine State this time, but it isn't too late for the governor, with the help of Michiganders, to rein in the rapidly increasing threat.
Is there something about Michigan this is prompting the spike in infections? No, it's the same dynamics happening elsewhere. They just seem to be happening in Michigan first. Restaurants and bars are pushing their permitted 50 percent maximum capacity (capped at 300 patrons).
Much of the clientele in those restaurants appears to young people — and young people are increasingly among the hospitalized in Michigan. From March 5 to March 27, more than half of all covid cases in Michigan were people under age 39. Anecdotally, I can report that people here have lately become much more casual about wearing masks.
It feels as though we haven't learned the lessons of 2020. Or that the sense of coronavirus vaccines coming to the rescue has made us forget those lessons.

The underlined is particularly worrisome. More young people getting hospitalized even than last summer and fall. Not a good time to open things up.
At the very least, we should implement a vaccine passport system if we're going to keep opening things up.

How are hospitalizations trending?
UK variant is predominant in MI, cases are climbing dramatically, including among school-age children, hospitalizations are increasing dramatically (14-day average up 108%), and deaths are rising (14-day average up 53%).

CT is seeing upward pressure but like you say - not exploding. There are definitely some of the new variants here and in NE broadly.
This stuff has randomness to it that we are hesitant to accept. The best analogy I've heard is flicking match sticks in a dry forest. You just dont know which one is going to explode even though the potential is certainly there.
That is what makes all the mitigating factors so important. Some may abandon them and get lucky but if you stick to it, you have a better chance to blunt the explosion when it happens.

Everything I have read supports what you heard from Gottlieb - the vaccines do work very well against the B117 variant. And yes - manufacturers are working on vaccines for the other new variants.
The problem is that the B117 variant spreads very quickly even among younger people, and it often makes them quite sick. That creates concern because most 16-50 year olds still haven't been vaccinated (and it may take a few more months), and kids up to 16 still aren't eligible.

Doing great here. Good for Gretch in trying to get more vaccine with hopes of getting things back under control.
Biden's team response: pound sand Michigan and go back inside.
Because giving Michigan more vaccine doesn't help in the short term. That wouldn't show impact for a month.
For them to slow the spread now, they need to clamp down. So Biden's team is right about that.

Is there not almost immediate benefit after getting even the first dose? Obviously full efficacy is down the road after 2nd shot, maybe a little bit of both strategy?

Yep. It's a shame she isn't following the CDC recommendation and shutting some things down. We are also approaching the point where a partial lockdown may be advisable in a few other places, like MN, IL and a couple of places in the northeast.
I know the counterarguments - the US population doesn't have the patience or willpower. But the fact that the numbers keep bouncing back up - even with the vaccine rollout - might be a hint that the 'half measures' strategy isn't working.

No, there is not evidence of an 'immediate benefit'. The efficacy occurs a week or two after the first dose. And then the decline in cases occurs a couple of weeks after that. So case declines just begin after 3-4 weeks.
With a shutdown, the 'efficacy' (reduction in contacts) occurs immediately. Then case declines occur a couple of weeks after that. So case declines begin in 1-2 weeks.

I was simply responding to your question about 'immediate benefit' with vaccines. And I answered it correctly.
I can see the case for increasing vaccines to Michigan (and other states that are seeing cases increase significantly), but it has to be in conjunction with partial shutdowns if we want to have anything close to the 'immediate' effect you referred to earlier.

The legislature passed a bill that the governor hasn't signed. In it are guidelines for shutting things down and limiting restaurant capacity relative to the COVID positivity rate. By the Republican legislature's standards, it is time to reduce restaurant capacities and mask up. I am disappointed that the governor didn't sign it.

There is an immediate benefit to getting dose 1. Reports peg it at 80% effective after three weeks. But .. it's not 0% effective at 20 days, then 80% the next day. It ramps up.
I will bet a bag of Arby's that within 3 days of getting dose 1, it's 20% effective and 40% effective at keeping you out of the hospital. If you got exposed on day 4, your body is already humming along, you've got a 4 day jump start. That would keep a ton of people out of the hospital.
I'm not making those numbers up out of thin air, I've stayed at a Holiday Inn Express before.

Now, for actual science, approximately day 10 appears to where the body (across many participants) has good protection. Before that...eh, gamble.

There is protection after one dose, but the response is neither 'immediate' nor linear.
Studies on the Pfizer vaccine showed that infection rates after the first dose were
similar between the vaccine and placebo groups for the first 10-12 days, then tapered off significantly for the vaccine group. Further study showed that this immunity roughly paralleled the development of T-cells that reacted to the SARS-CoV2 spike protein. The following link describes research conducted by Duke and the National University of Singapore.
https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/local-researchers-find-pfizer-biontech-vaccine-can-produce-antibodies-immune-cells-12-days
Researchers here have found that the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine can help the body to produce specific types of antibodies and immune cells against the Sars-CoV-2 virus, which may explain why it is able to offer protection from Covid-19 as early as 12 days after a single dose.

According to my very good friend, my deputy chief: My department has 3 members who tested positive after receiving both vaccines. One is symptomatic.
There is a schism developing within my department about vaccines. Some who have been vaccinated do not want to work with those who have chosen to not get vaccinated. Some who have refused vaccinations are considering quitting because they do not like the peer pressure.
Recently, I had the opportunity to chat with one of the post-vaccination positive test people. He was off 35 out of 36 days. This is a long story.
An affluent suburb nearby felt their high school aged children were being deprived of necessary experiences. After their school district cancelled the winter dance, several parents took it upon themselves to throw one anyway off campus. This was late February. 10 days later, they had to put sports on hiatus and return to virtual learning as nearly half of the boys basketball team had tested positive for COVID. But not before playing one of the private high schools. Several dozen non-athletes also tested positive.
5 days after the private high school played the affluent suburb in basketball, they played the team that my co-worker's sons play for. 18, 16, 15 years old, two on the varsity, one on the JV. Two days after this second game, the private high school had to suspend their season for 10 days, as half of the boys varsity and JV basketball teams tested positive.
7 days after that, all three of my co-worker's sons tested positive. 2 of the 3 were symptomatic. Fever and lethargy for a few days. A week after that, despite both being vaccinated, both my co-worker and his wife tested positive. They were asymptomatic.
In case you are still wondering why Michigan has such a high infection rate. I actually went on spring break to get away from the outbreak.
For people mentioning positives after full vaccination. Are all of these people contracting 2 weeks after their second vaccine? Or are they going out and about after the first and contracting before they are technically fully vaccinated.
I don't know. The gentleman I talked to had received his vaccinations in January and February, but I do not know if he was fully outside the two week window.

Got it. I've just seen enough Facebook posts of people saying they are vaccinated and ready to take on the world again and it is only their first shot or right after their second.
Plus, that would be an easier answer than a few made it past the vaccine.

But an employer requiring a Covid test after full vaccination tells me some will never let this go and grabbed my eye a little more.

Absolutely a huge advocate for keeping schools open, safely (which aligns with what Papa Joe said and wants as well). This is being done successfully all across the country, sorry that parts of Michigan are struggling with that and despite all the science suggesting it is safer and transmission lower in the school setting vs community if the recent surge is truly being driven by the school setting then they should probably go back to virtual.
Me thinks it's not the schools causing the problem.

He said the mandate actually improved the staffing levels because, 1. Some workers said they'd quit if there wasn't a mandate because they didn't want to work next to infected co-workers, and 2. Hardly any workers call in sick because they're not infected with COVID (because they've been vaccinated).
I'm gonna ask you to be honest here, chicos3. I know that's not easy for you, but I'm gonna ask.
If you or a loved one or a close friend needed to go to the hospital today, would you rather the health-care workers be vaccinated, or would it be OK for you to be seen by somebody potentially infected with a highly contagious, deadly virus?
Thanks, and stay well!

Vaccinated people can be infected and spread Covid as well, so its not an either/or. Full disclosure, I am vaccinated, and feel every adult should be. Not sure there has been enough long term study on children, however.

Non-smokers can die of lung cancer too. But your absolute and relative risk of dying of lung cancer are radically reduced by not smoking.
While vaccinated people can contract/spread Covid, their absolute and relative risk of both doing so and of enduring severe disease are radically reduced.
