This is just shocking. Completely out of nowhere. Both had big roles. I don't get it. Maybe its their dream to play at Madison.
Pack your bags wojo!!
Absolute mental midgets
Wonder if the year of sitting out will help Joey to not turn the ball over 5 possessions in a row to singlehandedly lose the team a game vs a non tourney team at home.
Hopefully this at least means its Cain time. Someone with a little heart.

Wow! To leave a potential top 10 team next season, this is a Hauser vs. Wojo thing. Wojo's days are numbered.
This is the day and age we live in, all these kids / parents think they're going to make the NBA and they'll do whatever they can to try and make it happen. College bball is becoming less and less of a team sport every year.
You can't really blame Markus or the Hauser's, they're just trying to do whatever they can to make it at the next level. This all falls on Wojo and I think regardless of what happens next year, sans a Final Four, that will be his last year in Milwaukee.

Did Sam graduate early? Joey will lose a whole year of eligibility, right?
It must have been really awful for both of them to sit out a year at this point.
Joey is not a star by any means. Sam turned out to be far better.
The fact that we were a pre season top 5 pick is a joke. Wayyyyyy too much of an over estimate
Wojo has one season left to make something of this mess. The loss of the hausers is on him. If he can make gold still with the mess of a roster we have now. Fine keep him. The program may very well be in shambles now. Might even lose prospects with him staying
I will say, this is a dark moment in program history. Not often that the backbone of the program hit the bricks. Sadly, my gut says Wojo has no clue this was going to happen.

Definitely on Wojo. And now we are stuck with a waste year.
Damn. I'm really going to miss those guys. They were both really nice players, and I thought we had a great thing coming together for next season.
I'm really disappointed by some of the crap that people on this board are already saying about them. We just lost two really, really good players. For some reason, things at MU were bad enough that they're walking out on what could have been a special season. This situation is disturbing, but it's really sad that some fans feel it's necessary to trash them on their way out the door.

There are logical decisions in life and there are illogical decisions. My mind is saying illogical at this point. You have two players starting on a Top 10 team next year. The second team All American announces he will return to MU for unfinished business and in less than five days, your starting frontline is gone and decimated. Reports are documented that is wasn't the fact Markus is coming back for their departure. If not that, or it is a mere media deflection of the actual problem, then it could only be one reason, the coach and staff.
Perception of a program in crisis, disarray is not a good thing, especially in the recruiting part.
Is it too late for Markus to declare back into the NBA draft process? If I was him, I would seek some sort of waiver. Don't care what the reason the Hausers are leaving for, but Markus will always be the one to blame going forward, especially given the timing of his announcement, then the Hausers.
Wojo better get some grad transfers in the forward position big time. He just got small, with no bench and with the teams constant foul issues, it could get ugly. I said earlier that MU hasn't seen such a transfer since the consecutive years in which Chones, McNeil and Lucas left. But those were spread out and not in one year.
Lets hope the real story comes out reference the reason they left, rumors will not help this program in any manner.

I'm well aware that conventional wisdom on this board is that we were never "really" a Top 10 team this year. But, we were. Twice. You can look it up. And I'm sure Sam and Joey remember that. So, they've seen first hand what can happen to a "Top 10" team when there is dysfunction. In my opinion, the inescapable conclusion is that they believe that there is something broken in the program and they have no faith that Wojo can or will fix it.
This sucks so bad. Last week I was definitely not in the "fire Wojo" camp because I felt it had been a pretty good year (notwithstanding the train wreck at the end)
and because the program was trending upward. It doesn't appear to be trending upward any more.
So Wojo is still the correct man to lead this program? This is very very ugly. For what the pundits were saying about how good we were gonna be and they transfer anyways. All you need to know about the way this program is being run
Maybe this is dumb, but is it a sure thing that the Hausers are a package deal and sure to transfer to the same school? Their situations are pretty different.
I just don't understand. Why? Sam played 34 minutes a game, and Joey 29. Both were major parts of the team. Maybe they both were a little fed up with watching Markus huck up 30 shots a game, but enough for Sam to go sit out a year in order to play in an unknown system? For Joey to blow 25% of his eligibility?
I DO NOT UNDERSTAND. They must really, really, really hate Wojo.

If the BOT had any balls they would have kicked Wojo to the curb after losing to Murray St. For me, its not about losing the Hausers, but rather the fooked up mess this program is in with Wojo.

Med waiver isn't the issue, 5 year rule waiver is. You have to miss 2 years due to circumstances outside of your control to get the waiver. He's got 3 years left of eligibility, but only 3 years left to use them.

Yeah, and Wojo calling him out in the press earlier this year was likely a sign that he wasn't.
I'm guessing this is about Joey's NBA dreams. Sam was on this team for 3 years (all with Markus), and he and his family liked Wojo well enough after his freshman year to convince Joey to come to MU in the first place. Terrible for both the short and long-term.
Watching a guy like Sam Hauser walk out the door prior to his senior season, should make any recruit think twice about Wojo. A three-year starter, a guy who played thru a nasty hip injury, a cornerstone recruit, got his high touted brother to join him, now gone. You can't spin this. This is bad for the program, even worse for Wojo.

That's why it doesn't make sense though. What happened between last year and this year where Sam and Wojo convince Joey and the rest of the Hauser family to use his redshirt to transferring?
Like someone said earlier I think it's a Joey issue rather then a Sam issue with probably some interference with David Hauser.

My question is, what was Joey's gripe? The kid got every opportunity to succeed as a Freshman on a top-25 team for much of the season.
If I remember right, so many people wanted him out of the starting lineup many times over this season because he was such a liability on defense and went into incredible slumps but he still got tons of minutes.

So we have Wisconsin, VA, Texas. What looks the most reasonable? I'm leaning toward the Badgers.
There already are at least a half-dozen threads going on, and probably will be more before I finish this. I'll put this here because it's as good a place as any ...
As many know, I have been one of Wojo's vocal supporters, but there is no doubt that this sets us back considerably, and I don't see how he or his program recovers. As one who usually defended him, I do feel let down; I can't lie about that.
As the "CEO" of his program, Wojo looks weak here, like he has little control over anything. It's a terrible look, and it means he is officially on the clock.
This, combined with the way it ended with the Ellensons, as well as some players earlier in his tenure (Taylor, Carter, Cheatham, Burton, Dawson, etc), even the Froling tweet ... all of it adds up. One can look at each situation and explain it, but coaches are great at negative recruiting, and right now Wojo is an easy mark for them.
"You're really considering Marquette? Have you heard about this? And this? And this and this and this? Do you really want your precious son to play for him?"
Obviously, this Hauser situation is more damning than any of the others -- Wisconsin kids leaving "home" even as the team seemed on the verge of greatness. I don't know how Wojo overcomes this. It's a vicious body-blow to his program.
As for the Hausers ...
I am one who said last week that they had options -- came right out and said they should transfer if they hated it so much -- so I am not going to rip them for doing just that. Nor will I bash them for their shortcomings that were part of our late-season collapse, because they had plenty of company in that department, including Wojo and Markus.
Lastly, as a person in his fifth decade of Marquette fandom, I am a little sad that some of Wojo's detractors seem almost giddy about this. I guess because it validates their opinions about him and lets them revel in their miserableness?
How wonderful that our program -- one that seemed on the verge of our best season in at least 7 years -- now will probably have yet another long stretch of suckitude.
Congrats, folks ... you "win"!

Probably true, but they would be in much better shape after Buzz's training program.
Hate to say it, but Sam & Joey gone makes a little sense of something I saw in Hartford.
Having been on road trips during my college days, there was a certain camaraderie -- at the hotels, at meal time, riding on the bus, etc. -- where we all stuck together, no matter our differences off the ice or back at school. If we had free time at the hotel - at the very least - the forwards (or each line) kept together, and the defense and goalies would hang together (sometimes together, sometimes separate). The only exception was when the captains would split off from their respective groups, but nobody stayed behind and nobody went out alone, ever.
Back in Hartford.... later that evening, after the Murray State game, my daughter and I were going back to our room when we ran into several players in the hotel hallway, who were chatting with (presumably) a donor. They were all together, dejected, but appearing somewhat relieved that the season was over. Let's put it this way... anyone who's ever seen a competitor have their heart ripped out could plainly see they were all leaning on, and supporting, one another (metaphorically speaking) in their moment of misery. As we're about to get to the elevator, out comes Theo, who catches up to the rest. After we get on the elevator, my daughter says, "he's pretty big," and it hits me... they were all bigs, but notably missing from that group was the brothers.
Granted, two different sports, two different eras... but personally, it struck me as odd how - what now turns out to be our entire front court next year - were hanging together sans the brothers.
Maybe Sam and Joey were doing the family thing with their parents, maybe they were with Todd tending to injuries, who knows. Just one person's observation that, while innocuous on its own, may now add a little color in the grand scheme in retrospect.
Sam has to sit out a year, thought he'd be a grad transfer for sure in this case.
It just doesn't make sense for a guy the announcers thought would be an NBA player to sit out another year before trying to get paid. Just for what...more attention? Higher pick? Probably not for a better team. To wait to play with his brother when they are older and have a chance to really make a name for themselves as a duo? Don't get it.

"giddiness" might be the wrong word. I'll allow for that possibly being true. Unlike some, I won't pick a word (crapshoot) and stick with it even after it's proven to be obviously wrong.
More along the lines of: "OK, Wojo-lovers, are you happy now?" "I told you he sucks." With the Virginia news coming to the forefront, what are the chances their thoughts were made up just within the last couple weeks? After a disappointing end to the year and early exit to the tournament, I have to imagine they're watching some programs throughout the tournament and envision themselves fitting in with. Who thinks their minds were made up well before we heard Markus was returning? Feel like it happened more recently and his decision to return was the most recent catalyst.

Scoops are always appreciated. But when you come speaking definitively and certainly, it better be right or people are going to be annoyed. Thats why I chirped you. You touted your Vander inside info and then were dead wrong about Markus and said "welp I guess he changed his mind". You touted your Vander inside info and then were dead wrong about Markus and said "welp I guess he changed his mind". Then again spoke definitively about where the Hausers were going an hour after they announced they were leaving. Happy to eat crow if you're right, quote me on it. But if you're passing off information or rumblings as cold hard fact, don't get your feathers ruffled if people throw shade when you're incorrect, thats all.
I take everything on this board with a grain of salt.
I strictly pass on information I hear. Take it with a grain of salt. I shouldn't speak definitively. My bad.

Now that this crapstorm is past its peak...
What's with the major amount of hate that people get when they come to the board with "insider" information? Isn't that what this board is all about? Us plebs coming to share knowledge about the program with each other?
The crucifixions that happen when someone is "wrong" about something on this board are incredible. "Wrong" is in parentheses because you can't be "wrong" when sharing a rumor they heard.
Guess I'll keep everything to myself from now on. Sheesh.
You know the drill man. When people don't like the message they attack the messenger. I for one appreciate all you've shared and have said as much. I'm sure your Howard info was accurate at the time you posted it and things changed. Keep sharing what you hear.

It wasn't what we wanted, but we could see the plain truth in front of our eyes. You chose to bury your head to reality. Congrats on pulling your heads out of....the sand.
I see the Wojo era different than most but it is how I see it.
How many times did we hear Markus, Markus, Markus? Wojo the cheerleader for Markus. Wojo the super fan of Markus. That is great but in truth Markus is a great shooter, but little else. He is not a D Wade, Doc Rivers, Butch Lee or Dean Meminger. Markus is the best 3 point shooter of the group but not the best player. He deserves praise but not at the expense of the Team.
Wojo simply does not understand what it means to actually implement, "our strength is our team". His continued admiration and lauding of Markus was well beyond his overall skill set. He is not a team player. By continuously praising Markus and not reining him in alienated other very good players on the team and undermined the Team concept. We are now suffering the results of his inability to handle highly competitive players. Yes Markus is a great shooter but the Hausers deserved more public attention given their contribution. And, yes let's not forget Joey was a Freshman filling a sophomore's role. Not reining Markus in is Wojo's downfall.

..and when did Wojo reign in Joey or Sam. There were times I would have liked to seen more Jamal or Brendan, but when they made a mistake it was "pine city". Joey and Sam were free to have bad games but the others could not even have a bad 5 minutes. So don't say Wojo only deferred only to Markus.

Connections, connections, connections
Just a theory, but I'm trying to make sense of this. Sam seemed to be happy his first two years here. Then this year, Joey joined the lineup. Some posters here have called Joey "too soft". Is it possible Wojo was too tough behind closed doors for Joey to handle? Is Sam being the "good brother" because Joey couldn't take Wojo's heat and Joey became increasingly miserable as the season went on? Does anyone have any background knowledge of this that could confirm or deny my theory?

Some people who claim to be in the know say its the opposite. Sam wanted out, Joey is following. No one seems to be sure of Sam's reasoning for wanting out.

Congrats, folks ... you "win"!
Brother 82, trust me that I take no joy in this, I'm sick. 1000x worse than the Murray State loss - while that was damning in it's own right there is enough to the "crap shoot" narrative to be able to move on from that.
I agree I don't see how Wojo BB can bounce back from this. This wasn't a "bad night" but a clearly calculated decision culminating from a long festering something. To lose Sam, a fan favourite that embodied everything Wojo wanted MUBB to be (hard working, smart BB, et ) from a tram with legit final four hopes is just a bombshell. Nothing to gain by pulling the plug on Wojo for next year, there's enough of a team there - but unless Wojo pulls off something magical next year in terms of NCAA or recruiting success he needs to be gone by this time next year.
1SE, that's exactly my sentiments. I can't imagine Sam's rationale, but he's welcome to make whatever choice he wants. He certainly doesn't owe me, or any other fans, anything.
Still, I will remain confused, and see it as a very bad look for Wojo. I've been one to give him a lot of slack, but he absolutely needs to guide the team to a very strong season next year, even without the Hausers, and get a solid recruiting class for 2020, or else I'll be ready for a change.

Why are people burying their head in the sand thinking Wojo might pull something off next year. He just lost two starters, one of them being Sam, the best player on the team. That, with the melt down this year spells big time bull crap next year.

I don't think people are burying their heads in the sand. Due to the timing of this (hopefully 'this' is all the bad news), it is not an ideal time to make a coaching change. I think the vast majority of MU fans expect to have a new coach next year. Just have to ride the year out and drive down the "buy-out". (and who knows?.., maybe Wojo catches BB IQ in a bottle).

Agreed.
I can't see how this isn't a bad decision for both Sam and Wojo. Messed up that they couldn't figure out a way to make this work, because I don't see how this benefits either. Sam is going to be less than six months from his 24th birthday by the time he can play pro ball. That's not appealing to the NBA.

Nope there really isn't. I only wish it'd happened sooner and maybe we could've moved on a replacement coach. Considering there's no way the admin could've been completely blindsided by this maybe they should've proactively made a move. Now it's too late.

That seems so hard to believe. Their displeasure had to have been known by those inside the program it would seem.
The thing is, are we *only* losing the Hausers? It's been said on here that a couple other guys were also considering a transfer. Obviously a lot of minutes just opened up, but we might not be done yet.

WTF happened that everyone is suddenly unhappy now?? projected top 5 team and the team is in utter disarray now? how many guys are considering transferring? if wojo cant keep a top 5 projected team content then what can he do? I wonder if Dad and Mom had it out with Wojo. Also wonder did Bennet reach out to the Hauser's or the Hauser's to Bennet before the sh!t hit the fan. I agree, Wojo is not a cool collected guy but rather wound up. He always seem to have lost his voice in those huddles.

hes just kind of a baby out there sometimes. Stomping his feet and screaming every time the opposing team scores. Face red as ketchup. Just a bit over the top at times. BTW, Markus retweeted this.
This is the time of the year when coaches sit down with players and tell them the long term plan and what they need to work on in the offseason.
It very likely could be that the Hauser's did not like the role envisioned for them, and/or did not like the feedback on what they needed to work on.
Things could have been just fine up til Friday, and when the end of the season report came in, and the planned role for next season arrived, they were unhappy and made a snap decision over the weekend.
