As I 100% said. JoeC should be starting. Howard is going to be a TO machine this game. They are going to constantly trap him.

Based on the first 2 games, this first half doesn't come as much of a surprise. Hopefully they can stop the bleeding by halftime and make a few runs in the second half. If they get into halftime within 5-7, this could still come out our way.

I can't watch, but based just on the box score and comments here, it sure seems like we need to get something out of Joe C tonight. Hoping he gets going here soon.

Setting aside our defense for a minute, I don't particularly like our offensive scheme. We do that weave around the 3pt line a lot, but it doesn't seam like we're really working on getting anyone quality looks.

Free Heldt

Just like last year, Heldt and Theo in foul trouble, every game.

Everyone on team except Sam stinking it up.

Sam has 14 of MU’s 24 points.

Romeo maybe a lottery pick.

Only good thing, IU getting in foul trouble, bunch of them have two apiece and remember they are down like three players.  Maybe they get serious problems.
Title: Re: IU Game Thread
Post by: Floorslapper on November 14, 2018, 08:27:53 PM
Howard doesn’t even look like a D1 player

Archie Miller had a great strategy going into the game..wall off Markus and throw multiple defenders at him.  Pressure D has always affected Markus negatively.

Somewhere JayBee is drowning away his sorrows.  FTsNoMATTA and M2N failing miserably this evening.

Down to 8, then Markus with two terrible shots.

8 to 13 point lead.

Miss layup by Sam at buzzer, two points.
Miss frontend one/one Markus two points.
That’s four easy points.

Get them in foul trouble and stop that Fishner guy...

To be honest we're in better shape than we should be given how bad we played.  Wish Hauser's 3 or layup had gone in there, but this should be a lot worse.

Mucho disappointing. Running the whole offense (despite a height advantage) out past the top of the key, throwing up prayers, and giving up layup after layup. What's the points in paint differential? Those free throws that don't matta could have helped so far.

First time Markus has looked out of whack in terms of both shooting and turnovers. He seemed out of it in the first half. 13 PT deficit can definitely be turned around in the last 20 mins!

Didn't know everyone has to be cheerleaders. Nothing went right in the first half, yet only down 13. However, stating that disappoints me. Even though we are on the road, we are an experienced team that is deep playing a young, short-handed team.

Let's use logic for a minute shall we? They show what? 15 seconds of a 2+ minute timeout,  any judgement off that would be similar to judgment for the entire season after 3 games. Also, if a coach were to draw up a specific play, do you think they would be allowed to show it on TV? Wojo has already addressed this, please try to not read too much into it in the future.

I said none of that. I'm not going to freak out because we got blown out by a solid team on the road in the 3rd game of the season.

You’re right! We should give Wojo a contract extension! He’s a genius!!!

IU - three passes = an open shot.

MU - dribble, dribble, dribble = hero shot.

I know people will call me a troll, but I’ll say it anyway.

I really miss how buzz’s team were always competitive. Wojo needs to re-examine. Morrow was suppose to be a junk yard dog. Instead he’s nothing but a bench warmer.

People blast Buzz, but his teams ALWAYS competed, they were tough, and most of the time when they got down, they would always at least get back into it...miss Buzz so much.

“If the pitch forks want to come out.”

“I’m workin my butt off trying to coach all this youth on our team”

“I’m not making an excuse but we’re the youngest team in the oldest conference”

I don’t think he can use these excuses in the post game presser tonight.  Stay tuned.

Over or under that IU drops 100 on us

On a positive, I think joey is going to be really good.

Yes, from time to time they did, it happens. But..the biggest thing is, even when they did, they would fight and would go on runs at some point to at least make games somewhat interesting...there have been too many of these under Wojo in year 5 now..Losing is one thing, but to get your doors blown off by a middle of the pack Big ten 10 is utterly embarrassing(no, it's ZERO consolation Nova got blown out too). Given the expectations etc, this is one of the WORST showings in 5 years under Wojo...year 5, his best team(supposedly), and this is the showing they give?? SOMETHING is very wrong.

Over the course of his tenure...Wojo's teams have that many in a season. Look, when this is supposed to be your best team in 5 years and you get your doors blown off to a young team, and show very little intestinal fortitude, don't you think there's something wrong?? They are staring at 3-3 by the end of next week...should that be acceptable in Wojo's 5th year, with his best team?? Yes, it's early..but this game has shown the same mistakes they made all year last year...that should NEVER happen 5 years into it.

The thing is with those blow outs under buzz, the teams they got blown out by were generally better, AND Buzz's teams would always rebound after a blow out and play a pretty damn good game next time out. So i guess, if they keep it within 12-14 of Kansas, we'll be proud of their effort?? Great.

A well coached team can typically overcome physical difficiencies.  Scheme, execution and attention to detail can keep a team competitive.  I don’t think MU is way off physically.  Scheme-wise it’s just hope Markus gets hot and stays hot.  Lazy passes, low effort, out worked are all squarely on Coach.  It maybe early but this is concerning.

Yaeh, I guess 45% from 3 over two years can’t make you overlook 2 games.   Go away.

For those new posters out tonight like it’s your first night trick or treating, where are you other days?  You’re only here to bitch?

The shine on Wojo's rep is dulling as we watch this pathetic road performance of his "best" team's performance after its first ranking of his coaching tenure. I hope for better things in the coming months.

Speed matters.
Totally agree. Athletes matter. Yet this is the team Wojo put together. Sadly, this team despite some athletic limitation shouldn’t get pummeled like this.

Well you must mean NIT Tip-off - which we’ll surely get stomped in! Or maybe you mean March Madness and are being facetious? If that’s the case, it’s a little more sad than funny because you and I both know we won’t be there....

5-23 from 3.  Many of the misses were wide open looks.  If you are a 3 point shooting team and you do the, you are going to be blown out of the water by any half decent team.

True, but there were also the usual poor fundamentals and soft defense that we have grown so accustomed to over the past few years.

F*ck off lighthouse I'm always around this forum don't act like I'm some lurker out to hate. It's a valid point to make that Howard is in a slump, whether it's because he has to create for himself or his success is in his head I don't know

It's the absence of Rowsey.  How some* here didn't think losing Rowsey was going to be a major blow to the team and adversely affect Sam/Markus was beyond me.

Rowsey turned in the best Value Add season at MU since D-Wade in 2003.  The guy made the game easier for everyone and created MAJOR spacing and clean looks for Sam/Markus.

How about a friendly wager?  If MU gets a bid, you start a threat titled "I'm eating crow ", if they don't, I'll start a thread with the same title and also include "wojo should be fired immediately". Fair?

We lost an early season game against a team that is better than us on the road.

We lost to a very young, inexperienced, unranked team forced to play shorthanded (4 guys in street clothes?) as the only ranked and most experienced team in the Wojo era. And it wasn't close. I think we'll be fine (weak conference, not a lot of great athletes) until we play an athletic team in the tournament.

Rowsey turned in the 10th best Value Add season. He was second in value add last season behind Sam Hauser.

I still think so but I wouldn’t put a lucky bubble bid and first round exit out of any sort of equation. And if that happens Wojo should still be fired tbh.

Previous seasons have nothing to do with tonight, in case you didn't notice Henry ain't out there.

Come on, there are trends that are getting pretty noticeable. Markus had a bad shooting night against UMBC; people knew not to worry and that he'd bounce back - why? Because of experience from prior seasons. We struggled in all facets of the game tonight, which is concerning - why? Because this is the same experience we've had so many times in previous seasons.

At some point, even the most ardent Wojo supporters need to face reality when he doesn't prepare the team well enough to win. Tonight may not be proof that he's in over his head, but the trends we've seen from his teams can't be ignored.

Amen. We have some awesome shooters but we ONLY look like a good team when our shots are falling. To me that's not the mark of a well coached team. Buzz had some clunkers (all coached do) but his teams won a lot of games a lot of different ways. Comical when folks try to compare his coaching acumen to Wojo's.

Is this board always like this after a loss?  Crazy time.

It can get ugly. One guy (long since banned) called our lads "dogs who peed down their legs" after a tough loss. Hard to believe for an even keel newbie like yourself I'm sure - but I swear it happened

This...especially the last paragraph. Trends...Rooting for Wojo but seems like the same old stuff, some nights are not your night but you can always make them earn it. I absolutely hate hate the softness.
Judging by this game MU isn't a tournament team. There can be much improvement between now and March but judging from where MU is starting I need to temper my expectations. I would put them in the old gym in white t's and crappy shorts until further notice.

You've now shifted goalposts twice.  I'm still more than willing to take your secondary bet.  9 seed or better, I win, 10 seed, or worse/NIT/CBI/ no postseason, you win.  If your're in, let me know (and someone teach me how to set that as my sig.).  If not, then

that's all I need to know about you.

“It’s one season guys let’s see how next year goes”

Nope. This is the year. If we don't have a successful season I'm out on Wojo. I also am not gonna judge based on one game. Buzz's best teams got hammered. Nobody remembers Vanderbilt in 11-12? Nova/Dayton in 08-09? Louisville in 10-11? Georgetown in 09-10? @ Florida and @ GB in 12-13?

It happens every year. If it continues through this year, Wojo should be gone. But I think we'll be fine.

Exactly this. You aren't going to find anyone in the "wait til next year" camp this year. This has always been the year. Barring catastrophic injuries, Wojo is expected to deliver this season. I think we will be fine too.

I'm not TAMU but I certainly think a tournament berth is the absolute minimum. A bubble team that wins a few games in the tournament probably saves him. But personally I think if this team isn't a top 32 team then Wojo will never get us where we want to be.

Good analysis.  Quickness / athleticism lacking, toughness, too.  Toughness can be taught, not the other part.
[/quote

Disagree. Toughness is a characteristic of a person. Most tough players were not taught to be tough. It is how they are. MU needs some of the type of players Al recruited. Other than Theo,  I see no toughness in the returning players.

No to me what is obvious is that Markus is in over his head at PG against high majors, completely loses his offense, gets tired, forces too much at critical times and turns it over. Doubt he will be much better at PG by end of season just don't see it. I rather see Sam / Joey bring ball down, Markus can have it in the flow of the offensive possession. JC needs more playing time on Saturday. I liked when Joey & JC were bringing ball together.
