Kalif Young to visit Marquette this week
Following a visit from Duquesne graduate transfer L.G. Gill this past weekend, a source told the Journal Sentinel that Marquette will host Kalif Young on Wednesday and Thursday.

Nice.
We welcome you to sign on the dotted line while you're in town, Mr. Young.

Agree. The few videos I've seen haven't impressed me at all. Unless dunking on six-foot white guys is cause for celebration.
I think he's a good player with a pretty high ceiling. And he fills a need.
I'd probably prefer Gill, but I'd be happy if we get Young. I'm done caring about recruiting rankings (excluding the top 40-50 guys). Erik Williams, Jamail Jones, and Davante Gardner have shown that recruiting rankings aren't always accurate. Especially for a late blooming prep school player in Canada.

I'm going to trust that Wojo knows more about Kalif's ability to compete at this level than I do.
If he thinks Kalif is worth Pol-axing Wally, and all the ensuing hullaballoo, then that's cool with me.

Well, it would make him a future expert on scoop. Seriously though, a third big will be welcome. A year from now, knowing we can rotate Heldt and Young will be a positive.
Pol-axing? That just sounds stupid. ?-(
Heave ho by Wojo is much better, hey?
That sounds better! 8-)
Videos seem to show some decent ball handling and passing for a big - good size and weight - not overly athletic - better hops than a heldt or Gardner - some low post offensive potential - more energy on offense than defense but a decent shot blocker - long arms - agree good high major ceiling for a guy his size - lets do it !!!!!!

Agreed. Seems comfortable putting the ball on the floor after rebounds or from the top of the key. Can cross over to avoid defenders. Dribbles with his head up and looks for open guys all over the court.
His combination of size and athleticism might be an ideal fit for this team and Wojo's playing style. If he commits to Marquette, I could see him getting significant playing time (10+ mpg) in his first season.

I also think recruiting rankings don't always favor international players. Not as much scouting for these sites in Canada. Look at Shayok, I don't think he was quite top 150 but has played significant minutes for a very good Virginia team the past 2 years.
He will play more minutes than 10 a game, he might be better than Matt Heldt, and there is no 4 on the team. Yes, they will go small but there will be times against
the better teams they will need his size. It also takes a little pressure off Wojo for 2017, as there seems to be no player from Wisconsin good enough to get an offer.
Now he has to win a little bit and get in the tournament next year to get some publicity, the new arena in 2018 will be a huge sales tool to sell the program.
I'm sold now. Just watched his mixtape. Headband baby. Welcome to town Kalif. Enjoy your visit.
I think Heldt is going to be a serviceable 5 and will step into that position when Luke graduates.

Wojo needs to close the sale with the Mom. This is where the MU factor as being a quality institution comes into play.
Ed Cooley and Providence is tough competition.
This might come down to whether or not Bentil comes back. If he comes back, Providence will have to COOLey on one of their current players in order to make room for Young.
Position might become a factor as well. Young would play the PF and a little bit of C for Marquette. He would play all C for Providence. He would be the tallest guy on their roster.

OK so why don't we try and help Wojo out by changing our Names. If Kalif visits this site and sees his name in many of ours, to me it's akin to a player looking in the stands and seeing many Fans wearing his Jersey. I think it's worth a try!

I could change my handle to reflect my first name and the hope of landing a new power forward, but 'Sean Young' has far too many negative (read: batcrap crazy) associations.

Can't agree with your comments.
First, on Shayok.. the kid played HS ball in flippin New Jersey, U.S.A. and played in the Nike EYBL. Not some "hidden" international guy who people didn't see a ton of.
As far as other international players.. how about the buzz on Thon Maker? How about Ben flippin Simmons?
I agree -- if there are guys who don't play any ball in the U.S., then that's one thing.. but most of these "international stars" have been seen a ton, be it global competitions, high school or the travel leagues.

Any of you keeners know how the visit is going so far? Has he been fit for a walking boot or pull?
Gents,
Kalif played in session 1 of the 2015 EYBL.. numbers I've got for him say: 107 Ortg, 16% usage, 14% OR%, 16%+ DR%, 2.9% blocks, 2.7% steals, 4.2 FC/32, sub-17% turnover rate
If he can log some decent minutes immediately (has the size, a''ina??), his profile fits our 2016-17 better than a Gill or some others.

Young seems to be motivated heavily by playing time. Its hard to see him committing to Providence if they bring in a higher rated PF the same year as him, but you never know. Hopefully Mr. Turner loves his Providence experience so much that he makes Mr. Young's decision very easy.

Canadian big man Kalif Young will likely choose between Big East schools Marquette and Providence within the next couple of weeks, his father told SNY.tv on Wednesday.
"Essentially right now, he's pretty well down to two schools," Tony Young said by phone from Toronto. "So it's between Marquette and Providence."
Tony said many other BCS schools have called to express interest but it's unlikely Kalif will consider them seriously.
"There's a lot of big schools that have been after him," he said. "We're getting calls from Oklahoma, Purdue, Vanderbilt, all these other schools....He's like, 'Nope, nope, nope.' He's kind of stuck with [what he has]."

I don't think he confirmed he was visiting Providence, just that it was the original plan. He quoted what the father said, ended the quote then said Providence 5/14.

I didn't want to pull a Heisey and paste the entire story, from the link above
He is tentatively set to visit Providence the weekend of May 14 but his father is quoted as saying:
"They obviously need big men," Tony said. "Kalif went there for an unofficial visit. I think he felt very comfortable with the connection with [head coach Ed] Cooley and Jeff Battle. I think he likes the fact what they've done in terms of their development with [Kris] Dunn and [Ben] Bentil, I think that impressed him."
After the Providence visit, Young will likely decide.
"Unless something else comes up that he feels he wants to go out and visit, that will be a last minute visit," Tony said. "These are his only two visits. He obviously has five. He still has three other ones if he wants to take them. "But the idea would be after Providence, he comes home and we regroup, see what he's feeling and then he'd put it out there."
and this is a part I like, granted it's from his father but: Added Tony: "He's quick on his feet for his size. He's a killer on the boards. He can post. He can handle the ball for a big man. Everyone tells me he has a great IQ on the court and he has great passing ability. One person says he passes the basketball like a football."
As for his skillset, Orangeville Prep coach Larry Blunt previously told SNY.tv: "Kalif is a very skilled lefty with college strength already. He has incredible feel for the game and can shoot the ball consistently from 17 feet in, and the pick-and-pop 3. You can throw the ball to Kalif on the block and not only can he score, but he is an exceptional passer. He can hedge on ball screens and even switch out on guards in late-shot clock situations. He's a great kid with a great family.
Not feelin' it wit this kid, ai na?

What's not to like? One of the top funded programs in the country. No doubt they rolled out the Al Blue/Gold Carpet. I'll bet they had his locker ready. AND he'll play in a brand spankin' new NBA show palace as an upperclassman. Not bad for a kid everyone overlooked.
That said, sure hope Big Ben returns. For one thing, he makes the conference better next year. And on the other hand he'd block Kalif's PT for a full season. "Son, your job tonight is to keep Ben under 20. Do that and we'll win.'

Not murdered - his 4 year old brother was shot on their front porch and Junior left town shortly thereafter... but not to Texas, to the Atlanta area.

I went to that game and JC looked real chubby. You could see the passing potential but definitely was questioning his ranking/MU committment after watching. He came into MU slimmed down.
They had another guy by the time of Latavious Williams I believe. Threw down some impressive dunks. I remember wondering what the hell happened to him. He was a highly ranked recruit. Then he went to the D-League for a year and became a 2nd round NBA draft pick the following year. Not sure if he ever played in the league

With the new NCAA rules, it's difficult to figure out how things will play out.. on one hand, I'd think many guys after the Combine will be able to figure out if they want to stay in the draft or return to school..
...but, then you've got a guy like Trimble.. who supposedly has 5 workouts with different teams scheduled post combine..
so.. could take awhile...

Correct. Tyree Chambers, Junior Lomomba, and Quaddree Smith have all transferred. If Bentil goes, they have three slots. If Bentil stays they have two.
Wasn't Quaddree Smith Providence's late spring center signee from last year? Where do you want to be in a year, Kalif?
BTW, Tyree Chambers was also a late spring Providence signee in 2014.
Junior Lomomba's second transfer, he started out at Cleveland State. What a shame MU had no shot at Lomomba after the way Buzz treated Hennssy Auriantal during the Maymon odyssey.

Sounds to me they lucked out. Why would Marquette want a guy that averaged 6 points at Cleveland St, can't shoot and wants out of a pretty good situation in Providence.

Its one thing to have playing time available but with all these transfers and Dunn and Bentil going pro Providence could be in for a multi-year rebuilding program couldn't they. Unless you are a can't miss talent (ie Henry) it helps to be on a winning team. Plus of course its more fun. If all this takes place I'd expect MU to be more competitive of the next 2-3 years than Providence.

Many kids don't think this way.
Coaches who are persuasive recruiters long have been able to sway kids with, "You can be the ones who put us back on the map," or, in Providence's case, "We have been building something special here and you can be the ones to make things even better."
By joining Marquette Young will fit into a highly talented team that is positioned to score a lot of points and win a lot of games. It is an excellent opportunity to join a team that needs a big man.

That happened to Marquette. Desmon Farmer was part of The Bronze Beast's vaunted "Flint Pipeline." They took Farmer to Saz's and the kid got the sh1ts from some bad pork. Spent the next day running to the sh1tter.
He signed with USC shortly thereafter.

Ha, if anything, recruits are usually more effusive in their description of a visit. This bodes well!
He already knew what MU had to offer. Given that PC was his last visit, it would have been easy for him to commit before he left town if he felt strongly about PC over MU. I like our chances.

Don't get me wrong, I think adding another big man is a massive need, but at this point, it's probably decided. He took his visits, he'll decide this week, and there's really not many tea leaves out there to read until he comes out with it. My bigger question would be if there is a backup plan in place. A mid-season transfer is not eligible until the second half of the season after next. Does nothing for next season.
Bank a schollie is the same as a self-imposed penalty. NCAA rules allow 13 scholarship players. So go into the season with less put you at a disadvantage. Really not much different than an NCAA penalty. So if you keep having less than 13 players, might as start cheating. What is the worst that will happen? They take away a schollie or two? We do that to our self every year!
Leaving the spot open, after sending Wally away, reflects very badly on Wojo ... like last year's Miller/Lee debacle.

It's not the same as a self-imposed penalty. And it isn't a disadvantage. Duke won the NCAA Championship with, what, 8 or 9 scholarship players? Just think, 12 is a disadvantage, imagine what Duke would've done with 4 or 5 more scholarship guys.
Why does it reflect badly on Wojo? Asking the last man on the bench who is earning a full scholarship to make the same dedication as players 1-12 on the team who are receiving nothing more? If anything, that reflects positively on Wojo. No preferential treatment. If you want to earn your scholarship you have every chance to do so. Just do what is asked of every player.
What Miller/Lee debacle? Not landing 2 big time recruits who more or less every program in America would've taken? Yeah, what a debacle.

Shouldn't have shown Wally the door if you're not gonna fill the 13th spot. That said, I think we're in good shape with Young.
As for not landing Miller/Lee, I don't think debacle is the best word - but Wojo screwed the pooch shooting for the moon and coming up short. Last years team badly needed a shooter, and there were other grad transfers that could have been had. He needed to widen his horizons a bit, especially with a Hank a virtual lock to be a 1 and done.
I certainly hope we get Young. There is plenty of playing time for him to learn and improve. I think he would fit our system with the limited videos I have seen of him. I think he is a much better player than his rankings indicate although that's coming from an armchair scout like myself.

See this is where I take the "Hank was not part of the original plan" view of Wojo's first two years. I think Wojo was going for the slow and measured rebuild but when he got a shot at Hank he took it which forced him to go into win now mode and try and grab one great piece that would help him win big which would have been Lee.
Also in his defense, if Duane played at a level that the natural progression curve would have anticipated the need for a strong shooter/slasher would not have been as big an issue as it was.

Feud over ... we are all good. Had a post about it a few weeks ago.
For those joining late ... Big Daddy is
very plugged in to the program. About a year ago he posted that the coaching staff was very confident that either Shonn Miller and/or Damion Lee would be grad transferring here. The
impression was that coaching staff was so sure they were effectively measuring them for unis. Then Miller went to Uconn and Lee to Louisville without either even making a visit here. I was asking how the coaching staff was this far off. That was the debacle. The coaching staff was very sure one or both were coming and, in the end, they could get either to even make a visit.
Now we have the coaches showed Wally the door, a guy that played 250 minutes in total this last season. The stated reason was track was taking from his focus. But Wally being a two sport athlete was well known with him coming in so it was not a surprise.
So if we go into next season with an open schollie, after dumping Wally, are we saying that an empty chair is better than Wally? I've seen no one say he was a cancer on the team and deserved to go,
Or, does it represent a gross miscalculation by the coaching staff regarding transfers ... for the second year in a row?

The worst part about an empty scholly IMHO would be the optics of it.
Wojo forces Wally off team to open spot. Then can't fill spot.
Whether that's the truth or there's just some "truthiness" to it or whatever, that's what it will look like.

So the "Lee/Miller Debacle" was that you got the wrong impression from Big Daddy's post. Got it.
Wally is better than an empty chair. But not by much. He was not going to play any significant minutes for us next season. Wally was let go when he was so Wojo could go to Young and Gill and say "we have an open spot for you" rather than "we will find an open spot for you." The former is a little more attractive to recruits than the other.
If we miss out on Young's services this will not be a debacle. It will simply be a recruiting miss. Something every coach has. Also, if we miss on Young, there are still other options we could pursue.
Come on Kalif.

Wouldn't another perspective be that Wojo was insanely honest with Wally about his playing opportunity? Beginning with his transfer from MN......'hey, we're completely depleted. maybe 9 scholly's so you will definitely get playing time after you sit out a year. after that.....we'll see what your development brings and what talent wants to commit to MU.'
If you assume he's 100% honest with a recruit from the first time he sees them through their MU career, doesn't it actually reflect positively on him? I'm not in those conversations (until 6 years from now when my 5'11" painfully smart but woefully uncoordinated oldest looks at schools), but if i was i think it would be refreshing given the assumptive competition.

Why do you feel the need to make this comment every single time Crystal Ball is mentioned? Anyone who reads Scoop with any regularity knows you hate Crystal Ball. Good, great, grand.
While it may not mean much (I think we all can agree on this), some still care to hear about it since it is May and not much is going on as it relates to MU or CBB.
