Now that Nunn is off the market who do you think Buzz should be going for to fill out the last schollie for 2013? There another guard from Illinois who I like, his name is Lorenzo Dillard. Saw him play a bunch and the kid is really good. Very quick and very good with the ball.
Darin Johnson comes in next week.

As of right now, that is our only scheduled official visit.
Johnson, Matthews or Stevie Clark should be next on the list if Buzz really wants a guard.

Also, Ron Patterson is in play for MU, assuming he gets his books straight. He's heading to Brewster Academy, which is where Deonte Burton was playing before he returned to Milwaukee.
Also where Kyle Washington plays now.
1. Kam Williams
2. Joel Embiid
3. EC Matthews
4. Stevie Clark
5. Darin Johnson

Son of Skip Dillard?
I know they are related but I think Skip is his uncle, not his dad. Kid has major potential just hasnt gotten the recognition because he transferred and didnt play half of his Jr. season.
Edit: just did some looking around Skip Dillard is his dad.

Well, hopefully Rimmer wasn't axed to make room for Embiid....

Comments (30) .E-mail article .Print Kyle Washington's final four includes UW
Posted by Percy Allen
Weeks ago it seemed a long shot the Huskies would have a chance to nab Kyle Washington, a 6-9 forward from Minnesota who plays at Brewster Academy in New Hampshire.
His initial list included as many as 10 schools and he reportedly had seven on his list last week.
In recent days, Washington cut his list to a workable number and the Huskies made the cut to the final four, according to Benjamin Worgull of BadgerNation.com. The other teams are North State Carolina, Baylor and Ohio State.
Buckeyes coach Thad Matta visited Washington today, according to a tweet from Brewster Academy coach Jason Smith.
MONDAY MORNING LINKS:
--- Darin Johnson, a 6-4 guard from Sacramento, visited Oregon last weekend and now puts the Ducks at the top of his list. Johnson is expected to visit Washington (Oct. 6) and Marquette on Thursday. He's also made an official trip to San Diego State and he may have made an unofficial trip to California.

B.S. Don't believe the hype.
In regard to Washington, In that article Wisc did not make the final 4, which is being reported by badgernation? Are you hearing we are still in the running with Washington? I never got the impression we were near the Top with him?
Kam williams from the columbus dispatch.
Kameron Williams, 6-3, 170, G, Baltimore (Mount St. Joseph's)
... Williams, a deadeye perimeter shooter, is on the Ohio State campus this weekend after hurriedly scheduling an official visit following an in-home visit with Matta on Wednesday. The Buckeyes moved on him quickly after Freeman committed to UCLA last weekend and with the possibility of Nunn pulling the trigger for Illinois this weekend. Williams visited his perceived favorite, the University of Miami, last weekend. He also is considering Marquette, Syracuse and Wake Forest but has not scheduled a visit to any of them, and his father told Scout.com that "it seems like he is on the fast track to picking a school."
We are still in the running for Washington.
Washington has a gap in his scheduled visits for the weekend of Oct 12. Really hope the staff can get him on campus that weekend. I don't believe we have any 2013 players currently lined up for Madness, but as of now, I believe Embiid, Patterson, and EC Matthews are both still available that weekend.
Per @JoshGershon, Marquette is now off 2013 SG Darin Johnson's list of schools.

Jones was gone before that. It is not clear whether Washington is gone. It also is not clear if Matthews is gone, since he postponed his visit.
What we will never know is if after the visit Johnson moved on from us or we moved on from him? We supposedly were not the leader anyways, but a visit can turn off either side of the parties.

We have lots of guards.....which is good, great!
Why not Embiid? With his athleticism and ability, image a true big that could keep up, play by play, with Buzz's desired level of intensity. And contribute.
What am I missing, other than he's a relative newcomer to the scene?

A lot of marquee programs want him, so he's gonna be a challenge to get.
Why not wait till 30% of the transfers next year just like this year with Lockett, MU is stacked the following year with veterans:
Gardner/Otule
Wilson/Taylor
Blue/Anderson/McKay
Mayo/Thomas/Burton
Wilson/Wilson
Wheres the playing time for another player anyway, take a transfer
2014 better be good, no center, no back-up power forward

No different than many of the guards we go after.
I understand that there are fewer really good bigs.
However, we will have two of the best serviceable bigs in the game this year....a track record of growing success with bigs being a critical part.
With his connection to Milwaukee, we have an in.

Rough week on the recruiting trail.
Not really a bad week for recruiting. The recruits see a stacked team in 2013-2014, playing time will be tight for a freshman, so you hold 1 scholy and wait for a transfer in spring
for 2014 where there will be time for a center to walk in and start or a solid power forward to give you a rotation of 3 bigs. 2013 or 2014 is a big recruiting year losing Gardner, Otule
and Wilson. MU will only have Mckay, Taylor and Juan Anderson and he really is a small forward. So they will need to recruit some bigs. Probably will then need a 2 guard as well.

I don't see how you describe a week that starts with you losing out on your top target (Nunn) and ends with several other targets committing elsewhere (Kam Williams, EC Matthews) or backing out of visits and dropping interest in MU (Darin Johnson) as anything but a bad week.
It happens. When all is said and done, you're going to recruit a lot more kids than you sign. But let's not sugarcoat things. It was a rough week when it comes to recruiting.
I understand what you're saying about recruiting bigs, but the fact Buzz and staff continue to go after so many wing players tells me they believe otherwise.
As for holding the scholie for spring, when was the last time MU didn't find a scholarship available in the spring that wasn't there in the fall? History says they'll have at least one available in the spring regardless.

It was a rough week for sure...perhaps a pre-cursor of things to come on the recruiting trail moving forward? Wonder if this is just coincidental? Or, perhaps if some of the passion for MU that once existed has been reduced, and we are now seeing this manifested. But hey, I'm already in the tin foil club so nothing shocking about this post.

I do not think Larry williams has anything to do with it. However, I do think the status of the Big East hurts, the lost of several assitansts, and MU having to self-report itself to NCAA all are negative factors that could lower the passion of potential recruits coming to MU.

Obviously I don't really care. Harder to sell something you lose some passion for. Think recruits/parents ever ask if a coach will be at a school for the entire time of their 4 years? Perhaps it is just a little harder to answer that question now days. Not that I expect you to acknowledge this possibility, but perhaps others who don't have their head completely in the sand might consider.

Nunn saw playing time being a premium next year, does not like to challenge, so he went elsewhere. Small 2 guards are a replaceable. Duane Wilson can play the 2 if needed, like
to see a taller 2 guard in the future. The other recruits, oh well. Buzz now knows he can start spending more time with Looney and Stone.
LOL, so your theory Ners is that the reason we are losing out on some recruits is because Buzz isn't recruiting that hard. And that he isn't recruiting that hard because he has lost his "passion" for Marquette. And that he has lost this passion because of LW.
Hey, whatever fits your narrative.
If Buzz or any coach was ever going to just half-ass it, I'd rather see them resign. Buzz may be frustrated, I don't know because he doesn't keep me in the loop, but based on what I know of him, I don't think he would ever half-ass anything. I have more faith in him than that.
When have we ever not missed guys? Last year it was the same before we added TJ Taylor. The year before we had to settle late for Gardner and Mayo. Before that, we missed quite a few before getting Jae Crowder late. Maybe it's early to start panicking.

Exactly. We have a real nice class coming in. Also, two of the players who might be leading scorers on this year's team are relatively low-rated spring signings. (Gardner and Mayo.) No reason to worry.

Hey, whatever fits your narrative.
I wouldn't expect those who work in PR departments at universities, to have an understanding of being a salesman - which is basically what coaches are. When a very successful salesperson suddenly becomes micro-managed, publicly reprimanded by a new management team - it is quite easy for one's attitude and enthusiasm to be affected.
You've got to be all in to compete in the competitive world of business and high major hoops - having your happy messed with is not a good thing. And I do LOL at PR spin doctors who have zero responsibility for generating revenue or being measured in a tangible, quantifiable way to understand what it takes to get up and grind, sell, sell and sell, every day...with your livelihood dependent upon your ability to produce.
But hey, whatever fits your head in the sand narrative.

Buzz makes more money than he ever thought imaginable, I am positive he works harder than anybody who wastes there time on this board, or any board. He has a $1M or so budget
for recruiting, life for him can not be any better. Losing out on a 17 year old kid, c'mon man, I am sure he can handle it and gets up the next day with a smile on his face, especially when
he gets his check for the month, probably $140k to $150K. I think he is worrying more about his own kids.
Have a MU Coach sit on the front porch of Stone and Looney and keep on tweeting.

Sorry Sultan, but PR and marketing people aren't sales people....you have no quota. Buzz has wins and losses...very bottom line business. If you start making it harder for a sales guy to succeed - or try to change the successful sales guy's way of getting the job done..particularly when the people trying to orchestrate the change have never been "salespeople" - the typical sales guy goes elsewhere - because he's annoyed - yet also a valuable and coveted commodity by other "companies."
Buzz has rough edges, and the administration wants to help him be a better coach. Pretty pompous considering the guy has led the team to back to back Sweet 16s for the first time in 35+ years.
Of course Buzz is still trying to recruit and sign the best available talent - yet it is also entirely conceivable that his passion, conviction and commitment to Marquette don't come across as genuine or intense as they once did. Of course no school not named Kentucky, UNC, or Duke signs every player it targets...so we are going to get turned down a lot more than we are told yes...however, I'm just pointing out that we may* be seeing some cause/effect taking place.
*Sighs*
I could deconstruct that, but why? This is already so twisted, looking at every possible negative and blowing it out of proportion. Ners, clearly you live in your own wonderland.

Memphis has signed some pretty good classes as the lone national program in CUSA. I'm more inclined to think that losing all three assistant coaches in the same off season was the biggest blow. "Wait, whose keeping in touch with <whomever> now?"
Ners, honest question: do you think Buzz is mailing it in because he isn't landing these recruits? That's the impression I get, that his effort is waning because of LW.
If the answer is yes, how do you reconcile that effectively the same exact thing happened in recent years resulting in Buzz landing Gardner and Mayo, who seem to be your two favorite players in the program right now?
What is different about Buzz missing out on September top-100 players in 2009 and 2010 and settling for 3-stars in 2010 and 2011, respectively? If we miss on Embiid and Patterson, instead settling for 3-star players, does that show his fire has been squelched by LW, or that he's still savvy and resourceful, finding the prospects others missed?

So, if I can wrap my head around this most recent bats*** idea--basically it's the return to the theme/theory of "bizarro Buzz", that seems to exist only in the most fevered minds of a few posters; the self-appointed experts, Monday morning QBs, and ombudsmen on public relations, journalism, being an athletic director, broadcasting, sales, coaching, recruiting, and psychology.
-------------
Bizarro Buzz Williams is such a callow, thin skinned, egotist that two comments in a JS article by his boss have him running, crying to a "blogger" and other big mouth "sources" about not being happy, but never having the guts to be directly quoted as such.
Bizarro Buzz apparently was going to jump ship to a gigantic skidmark of a basketball program, presumably for a few more dollars, but mostly for spite; is suddenly depressed that he can't recruit JUCOS anymore, due to an AD edict (except for Jameel McKay, who committed in June... ::) ) and dear sweet Jesus clutching pearls, all hell will break loose, everyone will transfer and decommit (one of each) because of a miniscule GPA increase that SOMEHOW will be ex post facto applied to players academic eligibility (Todd Mayo still on roster), all the while herding the players away from Humphrey to "slum it" in Tower Hall, Bataan Death March style. In addition, lying about a recruiting violation, repeatedly, no matter how miniscule, should totally be glossed over, that is the most honest and honorable way to handle that, for sure.
So now, apparently Bizarro Buzz is so butthurt by the administration that he purposely mails it in during recruiting visits, in order to tank a recruiting class (which already includes Burton, McKay, and Wilson)...for spite. OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOkay.
-------------
Now, I only got an A in my Intro to Psych class, so hopefully that makes me as much of an expert on that as others on this board, who I assume have VAST experience in coaching, journalism, athletics, etc. But to me, the folks who think that THAT Buzz Williams, BIZARRO Buzz, exists, are as demented as a guy talking to a chair on national television. Also, this construction of Bizarro Buzz is pretty classic, textbook projection.

And you are about as pompous, arrogant and ignorant as the remarks Larry Williams made. Though I HIGHLY doubt you have ever been in any kind of leadership/managerial position - in the highly unlikely event you have been - there is no doubt the people under your charge hate working underneath you. Furthermore, though you claim to have gotten an A in your Intro to Psych class - seems you failed to learn the basic principle that people are motivated far more when appreciated, and supported, than when criticized publicly...particularly when the person doing the criticizing has little to no credibility to do so...and never walked a day in your shoes.

This isn't accurate.
- Devante Gardner and Juan Anderson are better basketball players than Buzz Williams ever will be.
- Buzz never played D1 hoops (never walked in their shoes)
- Buzz was/is critical of their abilities to play basketball. (criticizes them in public)
I assume Buzz is critical because he's very honest with his players and he's trying to make them better.
This is a type of motivational technique/honesty that Buzz regularly employs.
Now, with this said, this type of motivational tactic might not be appropriate for LW and BW. That's fine, and that's something that can be debated.
But, let's not make blanket statements and pretend like LW is automatically a bad manager and de-motivater of Buzz Williams.
That's not accurate.

Actually, it is true - great leaders lead by gaining the support of those around them and underneath them - and they do this by building up trust, respect, and goodwill - generally gained through a pattern of appreciating and treating people well, yet nudging them to also improve in an appropriate forum.
The dynamics of a coach and player relationship is far different than that of 2 grown men in an A.D., and Head Coaching role. Please go find me another example of an Athletic Director less than 4 months on the job, calling out his successful head coach of 4 years in a local newspaper...for an issue that is not in any way, shape or form....immoral personal conduct.
And Buzz has earned the trust, clout, and respect of his players to be able to criticize them as he sees fit. The players he recruits CHOSE to be be coached by him, Buzz didn't choose to be coached by Larry Williams. Totally different dynamic.

He doesn't need to...he's got Wes Matthews to do it for him...and Lazar, and Jimmy, and Jae, and DJO, but whatever, just another bad point you try to make.

#1 You are correct, the player/coach dynamics are different, but the psychology of "You haven't done what I have done" is still in play (the human element). It doesn't make the situations equal, but the psychology shouldn't be completely dismissed.
#2 I'm sure Buzz critiqued players that he didn't recruit, right? What about David? Or Burke? Those guys didn't chose to play for Buzz. Does that make a difference?
#3 Buzz did not chose to work for Larry, so that is a factor. However, it would be a factor for any AD, not just Larry. It's not an easy thing to come in and manage a high performing employee. It should be, but obviously it can have it's pitfalls. Hopefully LW and BW are working it out.
Ners, I think your opinion that Larry is bad for MU might be correct (TBD, in my opinion), but it seems like you are traveling a long way on your theories to always arrive that same opinion. Maybe not everything is Larry's fault?

I've never been recruited by Buzz Williams, but my guess is that part of the pitch is how he can help me excel as a person and as a player.
In fact, wasn't that featured in the whole "Tip their bottle over" part of the MU hoops documentary?

If MU security monitored this site, they'd have to give serious consideration to banning you from any function where Larry Williams would be in attendance. You're getting that scary.

Of course...a coach has to sell during the recruitment. But to beat his chest after a players career about how he made them so much better would be quite egotistical, and Buzz has never done that. Buzz has skins on the wall in Wes, Lazar, Jimmy, Jae and DJO to all vouch for him. What in Larry Williams experience has he accomplished that would help or make him qualified to help Buzz become a better coach??
Last point - some feel LW is being directed by above - so I should qualify the criticism. If he's simply taking his marching orders, then the issue certainly is even more concerning...and my criticism of LW is misguided.

Oh please. It's simply a topic of debate regarding the current state of the hoops program. If Buzz leaves MU, and the hoops program goes to crap...Larry will likely be gone soon enough anyway...unless of course the BOT and Admin don't really care about Men's Hoops, or want it to look more like Duke and Stanford - yet not realizing MU is FAR from those schools with regard to national reputation.

Guess we can move on the Larry's more recent quote pertaining to Buzz's rough edges...you know...the kind of rough edges that made Al McGuire probably our most famous figure, and largely beloved throughout all of college basketball. But hey, in the politically correct world of today and apparently this administration....we need to smooth out those rough edges, because our head coach may irrevocably offend somebody....or have his head explode from tying his tie too tight.
It was a collection of stupid comments, beyond the help Buzz be a better coach - and more recently LW offered up the Buzz's rough edges comment. What idiotic university calls out its best head coach in 35 years for trivial crap?? Has Buzz cheated on his wife? Been caught on a motorcycle with a woman 20 years younger? I mean really....a little 2 step walking off the court in W.V., was so offensive? Buzz has had ZERO character slips from a personal conduct/morality point of view....whereas Rick Pitino can continue on at Louisville after cheating on his wife in an LVille restaurant. Huggins continue on after numerous personal conduct issues involving alcohol. Just pointing out a little perspective Brew...at how ridiculous it is that MU is even in a tenuous position at best with arguably its biggest asset.

Do we have a direct quote from Larry Williams stating Buzz has rough edges that need to be smoothed out? No. Would Don Walker go on air and fabricate and make things up that he wasn't told? No. Therefore you "win" this debate on the technicality...yet to a reasonable individual they would draw the same conclusion - that Larry Williams made the comment.
What I would like to know is, could you please inform me how you know the nature of the rough edges to which Walker refers are different than those of Al McGuire- when an hour ago you didn't even know the topic existed? So, what are these rough edges about Buzz that need to be smoothed?

I would have thought one would have to be willfully ignorant to not know what Walker is talking about.
But maybe you're right. The administration's issues aren't about players appearing in the police blotter, the sex assault allegations, the pulling of scholarship(s), the player suspensions, etc.

So you are now making assumptions about what the rough edges pertain to - the same rough edges you asked me to provide evidence of LW ever making statements about. Think Al's guys never went to bars? So Al didn't suspend kids, but instead got in fistfights with his players? Think kids weren't helped along academically in Al's years?
And yes, some administrations clearly overreact - notice you wrote allegations - ironically the players were never charged...yet we have a host of Catholic priests guilty of molesting boys. MU has long had a history of all sport athletes being underage in bars. Buzz never suspended a player prior to the arrival of LW (other than permanently benching Hazel for his transgression.) But hey, clearly some people see it the same way you do, and feel the need to make a mountain out of a mole hill. Generally knee jerk, overreactive measures, never produce good outcomes.

First, you're absolutely right, none of Al's players were ever picked up for being in a bar while underaged.
Of course the drinking age was only 18 back then, but why bring up that inconvenient fact?

are you sure that the drinking age in Milwaukee county was 18 back then?
The drinking age was lowered (around 1970)on the argument that we were not allowing 18 year olds to drink, but sending them to Vietnam to die. At the same time the age to be considered an adult was lowered to 18 from 21. At some point the age was 19 and it may have been for beer only. After the war ended and to many young people were dying from drinking, the age went back up even though they were still considered to be adults. You are an adult at age 18, but at age 18 you often do not make good decisions especially if you have been drinking.

Good point. Just as it is a good point to acknowledge since the raise of the drinking age to 21, MU athletes of age and underage have long frequented on and off campus bars, the vast majority of whom drank alcohol - just as what goes on at universities all over the country. Yet in our rough edges program, none of our underage guys were even drinking!! But hey...we better smooth out those rough edges...can't have these guys showing up on the police blotter for being underage in a bar. God forbid.
