Novak needs to get on a team where he can get enough attempts to make the 3 pt shoot out.

His agent would be wise to get him to play for Don Nelson or Mike D'Antoni where you don't have to do anything but score to get on the floor. Or get him on a team with a superstar where he could keep people from doubling.
Like maybe Miami?

He didn't have that in Houston with McGrady and Yao?
All Steve would have had to do on that team was camp in the corner and wait for the dish or kick-out. Unfortunately we didn't get to see it.
I am always surprised that Novak can't catch a break in the Association. He keeps getting signed so that's a good thing. But the kid is 6'10'', and he can rain. I am sure he plays defense like my mom, no one in the NBA plays defense.

He singed a 3 year deal as a rookie 3 years ago... He was traded to the Clippers. He has yet to "keep getting signed"
As for him catching a break, all he can do is shoot off the screen. He can't create his own shots, he can't dribble, he can't do anything but shoot off the screen. I'm not surprised at all that he hasn't had a good first 3 years, but at least he doesn't really have to work again for the rest of his life

I know him a lot better than most people on here, probably better than all unless you played with him at MU. Sorry for being a realist. I'm not a current undergrad who all they saw at MU was Novak, making him the "bees knees." Graduated with him, so I've seen better before and better since. Great guy and a good attitude (unlike Diener), I wish him all the best and am very friendly when we see each other every now and then, but let's be real about his actual talent. NBA talent, but far from what a lot of people make him up to be.

Thank you Dr. Semantics when it comes to my comment "keeps getting signed". 2nd round contracts are not guaranteed, so he got signed once, then his team signed him to an additional 3 year contract. So yeah, he keeps getting signed.
And since you are Steve's BFF, can you relay a message to him for me? Awesome presentation on Hello Dolly in History of the American Musical in the Fall of 2002.
And care to elaborate on vitriol towards Diener?

<---- Also not a current undergrad.
Must have been pretty sweet to be a freshman on campus for the Final Four team. Definitely something I would have loved to experience when I was a student.
I had the pleasure of watching guys like Hutchins, Wardle, my good friend John Cliff, Henry, Nnamaka, and Harris during my time at Marquette (a lot of NIT years during my 4 years). Novak was and still is a special talent and I'm sure that when his current contract expires, some team (in need of a lights out shooter) will give him a deal.
As an alumnus I want to see former MU players succeed in the NBA. Jimmy Mac parlayed 2 blocks a game in Washington and received $35 million over 7 years. I'm not saying that the same will occur with Novak, but there's always a team looking for a shooter of his caliber.

Seriously? Did you see the guy outside of school? I've got stories on stories about him. He was full of himself, thought he was God's gift to women, thought he was better than he was at basketball. He was a very good player, but a tool nonetheless. My funniest, most favorite stories are girls shooting him down in his face.
Anyways, he's a good basketball player, and I enjoyed cheering him on, but bad attitude. Novak is a class act and it's unfortunate more college stars aren't like him. Which is why I wish him the best and am very happy for his success

I would agree. He'll have an NBA career and good for him. Basketball has been his life and it's good to see his hard work giving him a paycheck. He gets paid millions to play a sport, and won't need a job the rest of his life. Awesome, good for him. There are many wishing they had the opportunity. He'll catch on somewhere I'm sure, as his shot is as pure as gold. I think his contract is up after this season actually. Maybe he'll make a return to home? You are right though, he'll catch on somewhere after his contract is up
I also do remember those days you are talking about. Lots of fun watching them play as a young MU fan. Big change from then to now. I remember going to games with my dad and walking down into the student section about 15 rows back. Big change, and I'm glad to see it!
To answer the question from the original poster though, I wouldn't be surprised to see Novak there. He lives in the 3rd ward in the offseason if I'm not mistaken. Would be nice to see him. I'm sure Diener will be there.

I'm shocked that a classmate of a player is bitter toward them. Seems like there are always a few over the last 10-12 years when kids started to take things personally.
As for Diener, perhaps that ego was founded. His first year as a starting PG, he lead the team to a Final Four by winning the Holy Cross game and keeping us in the Missouri game not to mention he was robbed by injury of being the program's scoring leader (albeit no one knew it would fall less then four years later). Lot of people would have a heavy head under those terms.

meaning what? also, newsflash, i doubt anyone's surprised to hear of star college male sports players being full of themselves. Most any undergrad student hears or witnesses these kinds of stories, and I am sure that collectively there would be encyclopedias full of these stories from campuses across the country. I am not discounting it or approving, it's just the way things are. Let's be honest, is it surprising?

I tend to agree... but one thing to keep in mind:
The players are celebrities on campus, and every move they make is watched.
I'm certainly not making excuses, but I've see how quickly players can be judged and/or written off as cocky.
If a player is having a bad day/week and doesn't say hi to somebody on campus, it can quickly turn into "he's conceited".
I'm not saying that some of the players don't act cocky... but I also like to cut them some slack because they are under the microscope.
Also: Sometimes acting conceited is not necessarily a personality trait, but just a lack of maturity.
EDIT: Spelling... ugggh
i will defend diener and all the basketball players that got a bad rap over the years. put yourself in their shoes before you judge. i couldn't tell you how many times i would be talking to one of the guys and a girl runs up all giddy and calls them by the wrong player's name. most people made it seem like they were pieces of meat there for our entertainment. also, if you got treated like a celebrity, you would start acting like one, wouldn't you? chances are if you have ill will towards these guys it's because you probably pulled some d-bag move and tried to get them to show up at your party and they didn't, so now they are jerks.
i can honestly say, if you weren't a jersery chaser or a complete douche, they were actually nice guys. diener was especially cool with guys that weren't only wanting to be seen with him because he was on the basketball team. i never really had much interaction with steve, but i was travis' year and i can say he was a pretty decent guy to most. it's the few he wasn't decent towards that make the most noise.
It really depends on the player. I worked the basketball camps after the Final Four, and it was a mixed bag. Diener was indeed really cocky when he was around the team, but chatting with him on the side he was nice enough. Novak is one of my all-time favorites. I got along really well with Karon Bradley, which was why I was surprised about hearing why he left.
Of the current players I've had conversations with the big four and all of them have seemed like good guys. Lazar especially doesn't take himself too seriously. Dominic has really matured since he got here as well.
You also have to remember that these are 18-22 year old kids. My friends and I weren't the most mature people to be around, and probably weren't always perfect gentlemen, but that's part of growing up during college. The only difference is the players are in the public's eye.

So his biggest character flaws were that he was hetero and had no rap with the ladies... may summarize the majority of the people I knew at MU.
I've met Travis at one our alumni game events, and he genuinely seemed to be one of most humble and gracious guys--and he loves MU. Surprised at this trash talk about TD.
Diener was a giant douche when he was at MU outside of basketball. That doesn't take away what he did on the court, but outside, he was a douche and many people can attest to that. Not all basketball players were like that. For example Todd Townsend was an awesome guy outside the court.

are you guys kidding? I'm sure people can say this about you too if they get one bad impression. I'm sure people have gotten a bad impression of me and called me a douche. does that make us arrogant people...hell no! me, my dad, and his two friends were staying in the intercontinental hotel last year and we were hanging out before the game. Travis was there with his girlfriend at the time (don't know if they are still together) and we approached him and started talking to him. he was VERY friendly and he introduced his girlfriend to all of us and we chatted away for about 5 minutes. he was drinking a miller lite and he was very polite and friendly. great guy he was. quit calling him a douche bag from what you heard from other people or what you see from his expressions. wait till you get to know the damn guy before you judge.
BTW. Steve Novak is a great great guy. he got married in my church and his girlfriend is from my town. we ran into him at a graduation party a couple summers ago and he was very friendly. he even played a game of HORSE with some little kids there in the back yard.

Last time I saw him was at Fritz' on 3rd. He walked in with his Aldi bag and the ass of his jeans was totally ripped away. I said hi and then he asked me who the greatest player ever on the Dallas Cowboys was and when I said Emmitt Smith, he totally ripped into me for not saying Michael Irvin. I conceded the fact that he was right and luckily he got sidetracked into another conversation
You never know if he will agree or disagree with you. If he disagrees, then you have a long conversation on your hands.
I had a long chat with him my freshman year, the year marquette lost to Tulsa in the coke / blue gold classic. A friend and I were walking by and made some comment about Michael ruffin being overrated and he tore into us. And was probably right. Ah the memories.

If you listen to the rumors from the ushers, it was not his choice, he was banished to the upper deck because MU didn't want his dancing to distract from the wholesome Jump Around Guy. So now he sits up there by himself, not dancing or really talking to anyone, just watching the game and then leaving when it's over.
Kind of sad if he actually got forced up there.

Ive seen freeway quite a few times in the lower student section this year. Every game ive seen him at he moves around to open seats throughout the game.
he does typically sit upper level, usually behind the MU baseline. He does wonder around to any open seat. I once saw him earlier this year, against one of the cupcake teams, sit right next to two people in a completely open section. He could have sat anywhere, but he sat right next to this couple. I kept looking over and you could see the confusion/terror on the couples faces. it was really great.
He has snuck downstairs alot this year and if its true that that is why he is forced upstairs... i dont really know how to react... i like the jump around guy, but it IS freeway and his dance moves are sick!!!

He's been up in 412 since the first month or so.
Seriously? What a bunch of dicks.
The guy has to be around 40 years old right? I mean, he was there was I was an undergrad. He's been more supportive, and fired up, about MU basketball than anyone. I guess this is the equivalent of sticking the retard in the basement so the neighbors don't find out.

Tom Crean did it.
