The idea that “it should have never got this point” or “this was tacitly encouraged” is fair and merited.  But the sentiment trying to pretend there is a lack of outrage about this compared to the rioting in the late spring is total BS. This gross and embarrassing and unilaterally being condemned across board.

Also, I’ve seen a bunch of people bemoaning people not wearing masks.  It’s an armed attempt at a Coup, but I’m glad masks are where we are focusing energy,

My god. What will happen to these people? This is terrorism or insurrection or sedition, right? (I don't know the legal definitions).

Why aren't police using the amount of force they could be using? Where is the backup/reinforcements?

Apparently the Department of Defense denied the DC mayor's request for assistance from the National Guard.  But we'll definitely make sure they're out anywhere a BLM protest might break out, to go with curfews.

For all of you not familiar with US Capital, the building very, very large and from the pictures, there are a ton of protestors there. Seems like local county police (PG, Montgomery and Fairfax) arrived and staring to clear it out.

To me, the underlined highlights why today is even more sad. On 9/11, terrible as it was, we came together as a country. Black and white, young and old, rich and poor, right and left. Even now, Americans of all stripes unite in memory of the victims.

Today, we are seeing a dramatic symptom of the continued splintering of our country. While many of us are appalled, tens of millions of Americans are sitting at home smiling, high-fiving and celebrating people they might view as ‘patriots.’ We are seeing the enemy, and they are coming from within.

Anyhow, like you said, the fact that we are even talking about it in the same breath as 9/11 speaks volumes.

Same time you break into the Capitol when the confirmation of the peoples will is taking place.

Trumps message on the situation is further proof he's a) not in touch with reality, b) responsible for this, and c) needs to be removed immediately.

Trump and others called for people to storm Michigan. The GOP was silent.

People actually stormed and took over the Michigan capital. The GOP remained silent and defended Trump's words.

You can go on ad nauseam where these exact types of things were either called for, and/or executed and the GOP remained silent.

If it was a minority of people that supported actions like this, the GOP would have actively spoken out against it. They didn't, because a lot support it...as long as it focuses strictly on their enemies. When it starts to get close to home, only then do they seem to have an issue with it.

I don't believe most support it as much as they get a short-term political boost from it.  Which I guess you could say are basically the same thing.

Every time I see him talking about this, I remember this:

https://youtu.be/KPhsSqXHRAs

How presidential is he now?

Van Jones is a huckster who is very adept at aligning with whatever the prevailing sentiment is to look in touch and prescient.  There are many people at CNN I respect despite the network’s sensationalism or their political leanings, he is not one of them.

That being said, I agree with those calling on the 25th amendment. Right now, Trump is the dude in his car in the parking lot that just refuses to go into the office cause he doesn’t like his job

Wonder what tomorrow will look like. Hopefully things don't get worse.

Also, this could have all been stopped. The plan to storm and occupy the capital was widely published online, and the US government knew of the plans.

https://www.washingtonian.com/2021/01/05/maga-geniuses-plot-takeover-of-us-capitol/

The plan was to stop them from being able to vote on certifying the election. They'll likely keep trying.

They also stormed the Texas capital.

Today just shows how lacking Americans are with a basic understanding of fascism.  And I don't even say that to specifically say Trump or any particular event is fascist.  But we are hypersensitive to "degrees" of, or slippery slopes on the way to, all things communism.  We have debates over whether pretty basic social programs or tax rate increases are on the road to communism.  But we have an armed political minority charging the capitol enboldened by a radical wing of a major political party, and there doesn't seem to be a lot of fascism handwringing going on.

Respectfully, I do not believe that this is true. To a person, every single person that I've spoken to today that voted for Trump is sickened by this. I'm not disputing that there are people that are happy about this, but it's an extremely small minority of Trump voters.

I hope you are right.

Assuming that, it would be in the best interest of every Republican in the House and Senate to put out a very clear statement strongly denouncing this action, and calling for prosecution of the perpetrators. If the majority of Republican voters are sickened by today’s actions, they will applaud those statements.

To my point above about Republicans clearly and strongly denouncing what happened today…part of a statement from Ben Sasse:

“Today, the United States Capitol — the world’s greatest symbol of self-government — was ransacked while the leader of the free world cowered behind his keyboard — tweeting against his vice president for fulfilling the duties of his oath to the Constitution,” he said in a statement.

“Lies have consequences,” he continued. “This violence was the inevitable and ugly outcome of the president’s addiction to constantly stoking division.”

Good for Sasse. I hope many Republicans follow suit.

Rick Crosby, a 25-year-old from Connecticut, was in an early wave of rioters that breached the Capitol, entering from the west.
Crosby said he was among about 20 people who made it into the Senate chamber, where another rioter with a bullhorn led them in a prayer. They then sought to memorialize the moment.

“We took a picture with Mike Pence’s Bible and put it back on the desk,” he said. After that, he said, they left at the direction of the police.

“It felt very historic,” Crosby said. “Regardless of how this turns out, I think this is going to be a moment that goes down in the history books.”
As he spoke, public officials and commentators from across the political spectrum were condemning the rioters’ actions, using terms such as “insurrection” and “domestic terrorism.” But Crosby rejected the idea that he and others were doing anything wrong. On the contrary, he said, they were just doing what the president asked of them.

“I think probably President Trump said it best,” he said, citing Trump’s comments to some of his violent supporters in a presidential debate. “He said, ‘Stand back and stand by.’ That’s what we’re doing.”

The unnatural carnal knowledgeer was putting out fundraisers DURING the riot.

Kansas City Star editorial tonight:
https://www.kansascity.com/opinion/editorials/article248317375.html
Assault on democracy: Sen. Josh Hawley has blood on his hands in Capitol coup attempt

"No one other than President Donald Trump himself is more responsible for Wednesday’s coup attempt at the U.S. Capitol than one Joshua David Hawley, the 41-year-old junior senator from Missouri, who put out a fundraising appeal while the siege was underway.

This, Sen. Hawley, is what law-breaking and destruction look like. This is what mobs do. This is not a protest, but a riot. One woman was shot and has died, The Washington Post reported, while lawmakers were sheltering in place.

No longer can it be asked, as George Will did recently of Hawley, “Has there ever been such a high ratio of ambition to accomplishment?” Hawley’s actions in the last week had such impact that he deserves an impressive share of the blame for the blood that’s been shed."

I am most worried about what he will try to pull in his final 2 weeks. He always has been unfit to be president ... but now he is REALLY unfit to be president.

He is a sociopath who is angry at his vice president, at many of his staff, at Congress, at the Pentagon, at more than half of America's citizens, at the media, at the country, at the world.

What is he capable of? What is he willing to do to exact revenge against those he believes have mistreated him - which, now, is most of America?

Eff pardoning a bunch of his criminal associates - that's a given; he's already done it and he'll do more of it. Is he willing to give out state secrets? To launch nukes at Iran? To try to use police to attack Americans? What traitorous acts are going through his warped mind?

We need to hold these people responsible. Should be removed from Congress. This isn’t a free speech issue. It’s about incitement.

Rep. Mary Miller (R-IL) has been a Congresswoman for approximately 9 minutes, and saw fit to make herself famous by quoting Adolf Hitler in her speech supporting Trump's attempted coup to overturn Biden's win in the 2020 election.

Addressing her fellow Nazis in Washington, D.C., Miller said,

×
If we win a few elections, we’re still going to be losing unless we win the hearts and minds of our children. This is the battle. Hitler was right on one thing. He said, "Whoever has the youth has the future."

The dude who doesn’t even like leaving NYC and is stereotypical xenophobic American in his tastes is gonna move to Moscow? Come on man.  Russian pawn is a stretch, moving to Moscow to be a Russian traitor is a bad made for TV movie.

As for Mary Miller, who the hell did she run against? Went to a mediocre college, married a farmer, no professional or political experience for nearly 40 years of her adult life and she wins her first election for a seat in the House? Not at all surprising she’s saying dumb shizz

Yes, that's doc's point. Just like the rioters were "peaceful protesters" as small businesses go up in flame.

How about bad people on both sides be the new perspective, hey?

That is also disgusting but His words stand on his own without you trying to translate him.

Ziggy, I understand your point.   I disagree with it on most levels.  But I am not in the mood to escalate again at my scoop brethren.   Which is why I didn't year doc a new one, either.

Maybe we will get luckier than we deserve and this will cause some introspection.   The same pollyanna in me that keeps me from tearing into Wojo.

Not many suggested that those who engaged in those riots were "peaceful protesters."

Kansas City Star editorial tonight:

Assault on democracy: Sen. Josh Hawley has blood on his hands in Capitol coup attempt

Beat me in posting this. As an aside, the KC Star has been stellar the last few months starting with this special edition where they detail out how they used their power and position locally to disenfranchise the black community in KC. Not specifically relevant to anyone else here but worth a quick read and gave me hope for more self/corporate reflection in my community.

He needs to be removed before he can pardon anyone - especially his family.
Sure, but how? The two mechanisms are the 25th Amendment or Impeachment and ratification.

The 25th requires a majority of the members of his Cabinet to go along. Can you tell me which of his sycophants would vote to remove him via the 25th?

Removal through Impeachment ratification requires 67 Senators to agree. I'd say this is slightly more likely, but will it happen within the next two weeks? Or next 48 hours?

I’m gonna have to disagree with you here. If this was inevitable, shouldn’t he have done something prior to now to prevent it?

The romanticizing and intellectualizing of "revolutionary" violence has got to stop on all sides. On one side we have wanton destruction of property and businesses, on the other storming the Capitol building while acting out a moronic con man's fantasies?  If you support one you cannot support the other (and vice versa) without being a flaming hypocrite and providing the opposite side justification for what they're doing.

I've seen a lot of people on the far right claiming "antifa" was infiltrating today's festivities and were the real culprits (it's already been condemned and debunked by one of the biggest antifa scaremongers around, BTW), just as people on the far left claim "white supremacists" are actually responsible for violence and destruction for which far left groups proudly take credit (some less than 5 minutes from my home and in two instances, my wife's offices). Doing that just emboldens the other side and is to blame for what happened today. You're not revolutionaries or freedom fighters, on par with the troops in WW2 or the American Revolutionaries, you're idiots, terrorists, seditionists, and criminals.

As the great troubadour Dave Hause (my last pre-COVID concert) wrote and sang: "Let's be saboteurs. Take 'em down from the inside."

While I'm against both versions of violence, it has to be acknowledged it's a different end goal. One is protests for equality and awareness to perceived injustice where opportune criminals have joined and corrupted. The other amounts to essentially overthrowing democracy.

Still though thanks again for the Dave Haus recommendation last year, a few  songs made it to my top songs of 2020. Though to give a tip, I wouldn't yell that you're against BLM at his shows.

I don’t condone violence or looting or rioting. But I also don’t face police brutality or systemic racism on a daily basis. People say protest peacefully. Then they get mad when someone kneels during a National Anthem or wears a black uniform or a patch on a uniform. So what’s the answer? Just forget the cause?

I totally get that, and I didn't mean to imply that he is a great Senator. My point was simply to give him credit for his very aggresively worded statement. If all the other Republican lawmakers did the same, it would show a solidarity we desperately need.
