Nearing the end of my week in San Diego. Definitely jealous of any Scoopers living out there.

JWags85

Headed to San Luis Obispo for a wedding this weekend.  Won't have a ton of free time, but most of the day Saturday if there are any cool spots for a drink or bite.  Obviously I know its wine country, but won't be trekking out of town until the ceremony/reception at a vineyard.

Awesome, thank you!  This is great.  The welcome event tonight is actually at Novo so looking forward to trying it out.

My wife is running the Marine Corps Marathon on Sunday...she's looking for a good Bears bar in DC.

Anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks!

Last Sunday, we applied for passport renewal online. We received our new passports in the mail yesterday! These weren't expedited or anything. What a slick and easy to use system. And to get them in less than a week is pretty incredible.

That's amazing.  Nice to know.  2 weeks ago my wife and I created "urgent" international travel so we could get same day service at the Chicago passport office.  We got the same day service (for the extra fee).  Next time maybe we try the normal way!  I burn through a passport every 2-3 years.

That's funny. I had the same experience. Not traveling until march but wonder how many have paid for expedited that got theirs in the same window.

We aren't planning on travelling internationally for awhile - we were just coming up on the 10 year expiration. So we were fully expecting it to take weeks. Pleasantly surprised that they were so quick.

Another cool thing about the renewal (or maybe any application?) is you can now start doing your own pictures instead of having to go to Walgreens.

Yep. We just had to find a place that had a neutral background and good lighting!

Depending where you go, the lifespan of your passport may get longer as the EU is implementing the digital entry/exit process today. That makes me sad, as I loved getting the stamps.
BTW, if someone suggests the extra pages passport, I got that one year and hated it. Too thick and cumbersome. Plus the passport control folks seem to dislike it too.

Spent a week in Houston.  Have been there 15 times but not since 2018 and rarely downtown.  Was very pleasantly surprised with the food scene.  Had Ninfa's on Navigation and Nancy's Hustle.  Both were fantastic.

I'm going to Houston and San Antonio next week, will definitely hit up Nancy's Hustle, I think the wife will like that place.
Any San Antonio Recommendations?

Was in Houston a few weeks back.  Loved it.  Galveston is a great day or two as well

It really stinks, cause I totally agree with you.  Its been awhile since I got an EU stamp and places I regularly travel like Singapore, HK, and Indonesia no longer stamp either.

When did you get the extra pages?  I renewed about 5 years ago and got the extra pages cause at the time I was getting 20ish stamps per year.  Now its just a handful as mentioned above.  But its not any noticeably thicker, IMO.  My wife has a normal passport and you can't really tell ours apart in size with a quick glance or grab.

WarriorFan

Now you just choose when you order the passport:  28 pages or 52 pages.  No more adding pages.

Haven't had stamps in years because I use my Irish passport in Europe and Singapore didn't stamp. During my last US passport's tenure I traveled to 14 countries and I think I got 4 stamps.

Totally agree, I think Houston is an underrated food city. Truly a culinary melting pot. Both Ninfas and Nancy's are great. Went against my "rule" of no hotel restaurants and ate at Xochi, super good, and the corn dessert was outstanding. Went to a cool little wine bar, I think it's called La Carafe, right up my alley, a little dumpy/hole in the wall, excellent product and service.

On a side note, did a little Civil Rights history road trip, spent election night in Selma, AL, next to the Edmund Pettus Bridge, and the next day in Montgomery. Lannie's in Selma is a historic eatery (although the original building has been replaced), in Montgomery, Chris's for a hot dog and Brenda's for some delicious barbecue. Wife and I had what we call a hood lunch where we get takeout and eat on the hood of our car amongst the locals. Enjoyed a casual meal at Squid Ink Eclectic Eats in Mobile and a delicious daiquiri at a speakeasy called Las Floriditas.

And, if you're ever in Memphis, hit up The Four Way, a historic meat and three.

Wow. I arrived in Europe this past Sunday morning so I received one of the last stamps.  I was not aware it was going digital.

I was taken to that Ninfa's by my friend Alejandro. That location claims to be the birthplace of fajitas. Or as my friend put it, "This is where my people learned that they could charge your people $28 for some skirt steak on a tortilla".

It was excellent.  And i say that as someone who doesnt care for most Tex-Mex places

My turn to ask for advice. Have a work trip to Berlin in February. 🥶 whole team is going. We typically do a side trip for these events. But it is a bit like herding cats picking a place. Trying to find a place that fits everyone's requirements is a challenge.
So major requirements for side trip destination:
1. Direct flight to Berlin or reasonable train
2. Can't be colder than Berlin
3. Somewhere we haven't been, so London, Dublin, Lisbon, Rome, and all of Spain is out. Selfishly, I've been to Prague, Paris, Munich, and Vienna, so those would be a no vote from me. I could live with Vienna though and I guess Paris.

What I came up with was - Malta, Nice, Edinburgh, Amsterdam.  Maybe Florence.
Did I miss some place?

My daughter just moved back home from France this summer.  My wife and her visited Nice in March.  My wife is going to Nice again in January for a workshop.  The hotel prices are like 65-75% cheaper and you can stay on the beachfront for a very unbelievable affordable price.  The weather will be much nicer than Berlin.  You're also a very short train ride to Monaco and scenic towns on the coast known for limincello (Menton).
