These guys are trying to recreate the microseconds after the Big Bang occurred here on Earth with a 17-mile particle collider.  When asked if it will destroy the Earth they say that it is unlikely.  They go on to say it is unlikely to create a black hole but if it did it would probably collapse on itself before destroying everything.

Thanks guys.

Should probably coincide with the Cubs winning the World Series?

TallTitan34

Yeah this thing should be up and running about 1 out away from the Cubs winning it all.  As Lou would put it the world would end with a "Cubbie occurrance".

Goat Curse, Black Cat, Ball Through Durham's Legs, Bartman, End of World.  Seems about right.

They are not going to start colliding particles until October, just bringing it online today and starting to test everything.  So if you have any unfinished business, might want to wrap that before October.  ;D

I guess we'll never find out if Buzz can coach!

Including donating to Al's Run.. might as well do it today.. since you won't be needing that money next month you can give it all!

For those that want to keep track of the situation, has the large hadron collider destroyed the world yet:

any physics majors on this board who can tell us why we should care about this? I mean, will it lower the price of gas or anything?

Two words:  Instant Popcorn

No more waiting 90 agonizing seconds for the microwave.

Instant.

Popcorn.

the particles won't stay together long enough to form a black hole.

no worries.

I put all my stock in Darren Daulton, former Philly and Marlin, who believes the word ends December 21, 2012 with the end of the Mayan calendar.

Not a phisics major but eventually this type of research could lead to us learning to harness nrg from dark matter which would essentially allow for free power.  It would also allow for us to build space craft (i think 'ramjet' is the term for craft that would use it although some people say that those could be built to use hydrogen as well) that will probably be our best bet for near light speed travel.

that's aside from many things that are pretty much academic.

Just a few things this could help us learn/prove/disprove:
String theory
Cold fission
Dark Matter

one of these days i'll find a girl who matches both criteria.  I carry an engagement ring around for when that day comes.

Personally I'm fine not know about dark matter, and you know having the world go on.  But hey, that's just me.

But TT, it's dark matter!  Dark matter!

Dark matter sounds like it has something to do with the dark side of the force?

If true, anything that gets us closer to lightsabers is ok by me.

http://public.web.cern.ch/public/en/LHC/Safety-en.html is an interesting read (more detailed analysis in the pdf at the end of the introduction) about the safety of the LHC.

http://www.livescience.com/technology/destroy_earth_mp-1.html was also a fun read (was linked in one of the articles TT posted above)
