bma---Thanks for clarification. I understand schools offer scholarships all the time for wide range of reasons. What if he committed and ultimately did not qualify. wouldn't that put MU behind the eight ball with that spot?
Over the BE how many times has a committed or offered kid not qualified at MU?

It could put MU behind the 8 ball, but that would depend on what else they have in the class.  If he is the only other big name recruit then it could be an issue.  But if Buzz gets a couple of the guys that he has been mentioned with recently, then I don't think it makes much difference.  Maymon is a good player, but he's not a program changing kind of player.   If he were 4 inches taller, or had an outside shot at all, then maybe.

In theory MU could always cover themselves by taking more commitments than there are scholarships available, but then you run into the opposite problem on the other end.

I'm saying that's part of the reason the offer was extended.  Crean was waiting to offer because he wanted to see how the academics played out at the end of this semester.

One of the reasons Crean didn't offer is because he is a late bloomer.  A year ago he was not seen as a BE level prospect.

True, but once he had his outstanding high school season, an offer was in the works as long as the grades were good this semester.

Raise your hand if you've seen Maymon's transcripts?

There's enough smoke concerning Maymon's academics that there may very well be a raging inferno here. But until we know something for certain one way or the other maybe we should take it easy on the kid.
There's still plenty of time for him to qualify and as long as that's the case, and as long as MU remains a real possibility for him, Buzz and his staff should continue to recruit him.

FWIW, Providence offered him this week, according to Mark Miller. Maybe MU should give up after all. Buzz stands no chance against the reigning coach of the year.

Add Providence College to the list of schools in hot pursuit of Madison Memorial junior Jeronne Maymon. Providence called this week and offered a scholarship to the 6-foot-6 forward. Maymon plans to take an unofficial visit to Marquette today.

Between his academic questions and his father's demands, I would not be crushed if he went elsewhere.
