No Wis. Division I schools face NCAA penalties on academics
Associated Press
8:23 AM CDT, May 7, 2008
MILWAUKEE

None of Wisconsin's four Division I schools face any penalties from the NCAA this year based on the academic performance of their athletes.

But the report released Tuesday showed the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's basketball team fell two points short of a standard of 925 out of 1,000, and was thus required to develop a specific academic improvement plan.

A school spokesman said such a plan has already been forwarded to the NCAA.

The report listed the following Academic Progress Rate scores for teams at Wisconsin's Division I schools:

Wisconsin -- football, 944; men's basketball, 938; men's hockey, 939; women's basketball, 968; women's hockey, 995.

Wisconsin-Green Bay: men's basketball, 959; women's basketball, 984.

Wisconsin-Milwaukee: men's basketball, 923; men's baseball, 928; women's basketball, 985.

Marquette University: Men's basketball, 954; women's basketball, 986; women's soccer, 991.

Wisconsin's best team, the women's hockey team, is also pretty damn smart.  995 out of 1000, wow, that is extremely good.

What's the grade on It's Indiana, Indiana?  Have those been released yet?

Saw a story that said they are below 925 which is the level that could mean sanctions.  However, since they changed coaches and instituted a "program" of counselors and advisors, tehy might only get off with double secret probabation.  All speculation

Too laxy to find the link.

Looks like Chico's list doesn't drop to the level of "double secret probation".

Question:  Are schools negatively affected in this analysis by kids who go to the NBA after only one or 2 years?

looks like Beasley didn't hit the books hard enough at Manhattan, Kansas there... losing K-State a scholarship, oh darn.

Seton Hall the only Big East school I see... am I correct?

biggest surprise for me was seeing Purdue on the list, all those freshman played good on the court, stunk it in the classroom.

Indiana's score was 899, but there is a stipulation in the program that if a university achieves certain milestones, they will not have to forfeit any schollies.

I don't believe this APR report takes into account the present year. I believe the last year it included was 2006-2007.

MU's most recent hire, Coach Dale Layer's last two coaching stops (Liberty and Colorado State)  have both received sanctions because of academeic chortcomings involving the men's b-ball teams.  I sure hope this is no more than a coincidence.
