REPORT:  Crean Allowed 10 Days On Road To Recruit

Andy Romey
Peegs.com & Inside Indiana Staff Writer

Indiana has amended the sanctions it placed on the men's basketball program, granting Tom Crean 10 days to go on the road and recruit, the Herald Times reported this afternoon citing a source close to the program.

When IU issued the restrictions last fall, then-head coach Kelvin Sampson was limited to 10 days on the road recruiting from Oct. 5 2007 through July 31, 2008.

Sampson used the majority of those days, while Dan Dakich used the rest, the Times reported.

The university and Sampson will go in front of the NCAA in Seattle for a hearing in two months. The program could potentially face sanctions additional to the ones Indiana placed on itself after discovering Sampson's recruiting violations.

Did you really expect anything less to happen here??  No way Indiana was going to follow through on this voluntarily.  Good luck Crean, you douchebag.

I would think this is rather embarrassing for IU.  They impose their own sanctions and then lift them because they need recruits.  This should be a mark against them when they go in front of the NCAA board.

It really is am embarrassment in light of the squeaky clean image they want to build for themselves.  I know they can lift their own sanctions, but wow.

Well the piece above says they go in front of the board in two months.  How long it takes after that no idea.

NCAA wil be looking long and hard at institutional controls in this matter.  From this perch, it seems like IU really has no controls.  Looking forward to a very stiff penalty for IU.

What a complete and utter sham. IU admin is a joke.   They must be getting walloped by the NCAA...between the recruiting violations and the piss poor graduation rate where they fell well below the minimum--and could lose up to two more schollies, this is such a pathetic development.  Not to mention their "self imposed sanctions" only allowed one assistant coach to travel to meet a recruit...when we know two went to visit NW.  Will Miles Brand have the 'nads to spank his old school?  Doubtful

I bet if TC takes a two hour travel time to Racine--with an hour visit with JM...he still would have 19 hours in that day to recruit that he could carry over--based on the Bloomington Accounting Board's rules.  Hello Enron!

Is it really going to matter how much the slimeball recruits if the NCAA gets tough and hits them with a tournament ban and reduced schollies?

They must really love the BS Crean has been feeding them to free up some of the sanctions they imposed on themselves.

Of course Saint Tommy just became shady and slimy just a few weeks ago.

I am sure he is spending a lot of time at Indiana texting sophomores and superimposing Erik William's head in D Wades body but digitally enhanced in an IU uniform. ;)

What the heck, those things were probably  legal last year so no biggie.

when your graduation rates approach MU's and your school starts recruitiing players who can actually read and write, come back and talk. Crean has to get sleazy now, he's in the filthiest conference in the country.

The SEC & Big 12 are devestated that you overlooked their hard work in cheating.  No way the Big 10 is worse, maybe Ohio State, but that's about it.

I was going on probations, arrests, etc. UW (free shoes, no discipline of student-athletes), Michigan (Fab Five, etc.), Ohio State (phony classes, etc.), Indiana (phone calls), Northwestern (garnbling)...yes, sir, it's quite a league.

Fair enough, but you're bringing up stuff from 1991...SEC & Big 12 teams cheat daily hourly.

hopefully the NCAA will step in and clamp down, considering Sampson's previous record as a cheater. IU knew what it was getting when it hired him, so the penalties should be severe. This "amendment" makes the school like ridiculous. Typical Big Ten crap.

You do realize that Ohio State was put on 3 years probation in 2006?

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=2362496

In 2003 Michigan was placed on 4 years probation

http://www.ncaa.org/releases/infractions/2003050802in.htm

Indiana will go on probation in 2008

Minnesota was put on probation for four years in 2000

http://www.ncaa.org/releases/infractions/2000/2000102402in.htm

Illinois was put on probation in 2005

http://media.www.dailyillini.com/media/storage/paper736/news/2005/10/28/Sports/Ncaa-Puts.Illinois.On.Probation-1037821.shtml

Michigan State came off probation in 2001

http://www.ncaa.org/releases/infractions/1999/1999091602in.htm

Purdue was put on 2 years probation in 2007

Wisconsin was given five years and just came off of probation only 2 years ago

http://www.ncaa.org/releases/infractions/2001/2001100202in.htm

I haven't even broached Iowa and the issues under Alford.

You make it sound like 1991 was the last time anything happened.  The Big Ten has not only been cheating, but recently and routinely.

Why are you even on this board? Quit being an instigator and get a life. I hope all Badger fans aren't as insecure as you to have to go on a Marquette message board to try to qualify their feelings. We're all tired of you're crap.

TC is a real piece of work and piece of crap.  10 days to recruit  ..  I want to know how the university will account for this.  so does this mean he has 240 hours to recruit and thats it.  Is sleeping and eating part of this equation too.  Otherwise 240 hours is a long time.
