Quote from: Vander Blue Man Group on July 30, 2026, 09:25:38 AMHow many people do you think will not watch on tv or not go to a game or not buy merch this season because 3 games weren't streamed in late July/early August?

That's irrelevant on ann engagement discussion here. How many people do you think would do the same if MU didn't post workout highlight videos, videos of Shaka driving around campus, advertise the game itself.

MUBB social is for all intents and purposes a content creator. The job is to keep fans engaged and thinking about the team. The question isn't whether it'll impact down stream conversions later it's whether it would help keep fans engaged and get fans more invested in the team in the offseason. It would, because the alternative is a null value. This isn't a situation where they're weighing overhead costs of production vs engagement either because the opponent had already set up the stream.

It means the question is simply whether X > 0 where X = engagement rate and zero is the choice we made.

They aren't, your best argument was just "nobody would watch" and it had zero evidence to back it up. That's an objectively bad take. If you brought that to your work you'd be laughed out of the room.

What do we think about Minessale starting over DO and MPIII?

Clark has a injured ankle he injured before the trip. He played great yesterday in limited minutes, but it was basically a JV opponent.

I am holding out hope he can overtake 18 for the backup role.

I'm laughing at people comparing Purdue's alumni base to Marquette's.

The fact that the Calgary Purude game had 52,000 streaming views when normally they dont get more than 1,000 says a lot here. Plus that viewing money went to schools to use on scholarships. Seems like a massive win and would be great PR for MUBB.

Do I need to watch a exhibition in July? No, I do not need to. Would I have paid $11 Canadian dollars to watch the game? Sure would have, as I am a MUBB sicko.

TallTitan34

We here at Scoop are probably the biggest fans considering we are talking about Marquette basketball at the end of July.

There seem to be a handful of people here who actually are upset the games aren't being streamed.  Is the cost worth it to Marquette to make 10-15 people happy?

Purdue has an alumni base of over 600,000.  They are also coming off deep NCAA runs so there is interest.

Quote from: TallTitan34 on July 30, 2026, 09:39:07 AMI'm laughing at people comparing Purdue's alumni base to Marquette's.

I'm not, Purdue had 52k streams (based on MUBiz's number)

It has >600k alumni with 123k likes on Facebook (not going to go too into the weeds here across platforms) so we can assume just over 1/6 of the school community is an "engaged fan". Then they get 52k views so we can say 42% of that is a "hardcore engaged fan"

Now MU has what, about 150k alumni? With 57k likes on Facebook indicates roughly an engaged fan rate double that of Purdue. If we benchmark our hardcore fans at 42% watching (but could expect more due to a higher engagement rate on socials amongst alumni) then we'd expect about 24k views. That seems worthwhile to me.

To clarify, I am not upset. I had a lovely evening taking my girls to Lake Michigan last night and won't lose sleep over not watching. What I'm saying is there's a reasonable case to be made to have done it. Also given the stream was advertised by the opponent it seems like there likely wasn't a cost involved to MU.

I am not saying MUBB would have 52k views, but its a great way to give back to the local community and help the Canada based colleges out. I would also argue there is a ton of interest coming off the season we had last year. I know many people just as excited for this year as previous years because there is a real chance we are back in the top 25 again.

Now factor in Purdue has been awesome the past few years while Marquette is coming off one of it's worst seasons in recent history.

I will never reject more opportunities to watch, hear or learn about things going on within the basketball program.  I love MUBB and, even with a season like last year, watch nearly every game in its entirety either live or recorded.  However, for any opportunity that is not pushed to the max to highlight or showcase, I do not view as a missed window or failed engagement.  Every program is different, as are the expectations or demands of the staff.  The greatest value of a trip like this is really for a group of players and coaches to bond, play in quasi-competitive games, build confidence and get momentum headed into the season.  It is not, and should not be, the window into the team via Hudl or live streaming.  Anyone that believes that is missing the mark completely.

Or they could just not deal with all that and have a handful of unhappy people who will continue to consume their product.

What I do know is that it's not that big of a deal.

I never claimed there was no interest. But I think the interest is small and most will simply move on without thinking much of it.

Your argument could be made for every "little" thing MU does to market their team.  Instagram and Twitter posts. Open practices. Coaches preseason pressors.

Would we all live if they didn't exist (the logic being bantered around) and the first piece of information we had on the team was the first game of the season?  Sure.

Would it be smart or logical to do this? Are their benefits to marketing your team at a school like MU?

Galway,  did not see you basically said the same thing

WHY IS IT $20 WHEN IT WAS FREE IN 2019?!?!?!??!

I did not say that.

He did. And it is a bad argument. Social media engagement is way more important than streaming meaningless exhibition games.

It's a legit defense. They chose not to stream the games...for whatever reason. Maybe they were just lazy about it. Maybe they just wanted to piss brew off and giggle over his reaction. I have no idea.

But they know the "costs" of not streaming the games. They know it will make a few people upset, but those people are likely going to consume anyway.

Meanwhile they are engaging all sorts of people on their various social channels instead.

It's absolutely not that big of a deal.

Sorry that should've been a single not double quote. Your exact quote was "very few people". You still flung crap at a wall with no supporting evidence admitting it's an opinion on a message board, and it's a bad opinion at that. No logic, no evidence to it.

Quote from: Galway Eagle on July 30, 2026, 09:27:17 AMWhich is fine but then Brew's or Hards or Shooter my opinions that it was worth while to boost engagement are equally valid opinions.

I'll agree Marquette had a reason they chose not to stream it, my theory is Shaka doesn't like extra scouting out for his team. However, let's not split hairs here and pretend that it's meaningless while posting as much as they did on the game is somehow meaningful. It's either something to advertise or it's not. If the NBA did this same thing with the summer league or FIBA did that with a friendly match it'd be viewed as a fail. MU should be held to the same standard as any other major basketball organization.

That's my speculation also, as it seems like it would've been an easy marketing move. That said, I find it a bit silly to "hide" game footage. The things that a scouting team (and future opponent) could see and use now are pretty likely to change at least a bit by the beginning of the season. And, "real" opponents (ie, not cupcakes) are going to have at least two games of regular season film before we face Michigan.
