Quote from: The Sultan on Today at 09:31:14 AMNo, Blue's argument has nothing to do with "optics." His argument is that you don't overpay for a player, especially a back up who isn't likely going to see meaningful minutes, if it knocks your entire compensation structure out of whack.

Right.
The problem with that argument is that it presents a false choice. MU's options weren't limited to a) do nothing or b) knock the entire compensation structure out of whack.

I completely agree. I don't want to overpay for a back up. I just think the staff decided that it was better to bank the $$ that Sheek was making and roll it back with the two we have.

I think TAMU and brew are actually both right here. They kicked around options and decided to stick with what they have for whatever reason.

Sheek was a highly regarded recruit. Just because SLU offered him a huge bag doesn't mean he was making pennies here. It's not a budget issue, it's a misevaluation issue.

Quote from: #UnleashThePortal on Today at 09:19:34 AMI guess its more of having to pay market value for what you need right? The old way didnt work, why advocate to bring it back?

If the market value is insane for a player that is unlikely to make a significant impact, the team should just pay it anyway, huh?

Correct.

Quote from: Vander Blue Man Group on Today at 08:56:08 AMI'm not remotely ignoring how the market works.  It's a bad comparison.

As I said, the scenario described above was a hypothetical but likely a realistic one.

If there was a back-up big available that was better than Hamilton/Clark and whose compensation fit with what Sheek or what a guy like DO is making and Shaka didn't add the player, that's a mistake.

The problem is the staff rates ch18 higher than the options available on the open market.

Yes. I think that is obviously the case. We will see if they, yet again, over-estimate his abilities.

The reality is that compensation is part of that decision making process. I'd be more concerned with misevaluation if Hamilton's minutes hadn't declined significantly during the season.

Shaka probably should have been cold-blooded, cut 18 and Clark, and used the $$$ earmarked for them and Sheek to buy the best back-up big Marquette could afford. Maybe there would have even been enough $$$ left over to get a back-up PG who could dribble and chew gum at the same time.

But that's not what Shaka did, which will give all of us stuff to talk about (and b!tch about) from now until at least next April.

The actual reality is the program's archaic approach to the portal. They're still operating under the assumption there are rules and waiting for legislation/regulation to level set the playing field.

In reality, there are no rules, tampering is rampant and the competition is doing whatever it takes to improve their rosters at any point during the season when there are holes (see SLU) whereas we are years behind in player identification and modern roster building techniques.

Adding/replacing only two players following a 12-20 season is proof positive of the struggles this staff is going through building a competitive roster.
