But in regards to stopping school/mass shootings and the resulting deaths, guns first.

Sadly, it's the only amendment to the constitution we can't ignore

Not mutually exclusive. The brilliant people we put in charge should be able to do both.

All the time.   There are rare instances of mass shootings elsewhere.

Problem solved!

If you asked me to pick which is more likely, arming kids or sensible gun reform and mental health assistance, I'll take arming kids as the most likely outcome

Prayers aren't inherently bad as sympathy and empathy are good but in this country they are utilized as a complete replacement for even the slightest bit of action to make changes and to avoid any remote shred of guilt or accountability on preventable tragedies

Don't forget, right now there are some Christians claiming the real problem with America is too much empathy.

I just read a couple of articles about this. Probably the most f&cked-up thing I've read this month.

But it tracks, given the political climate in the U.S.

As the OP of this thread and a parent who has lost a child I can speak to the unimaginable pain those two families and their entire parish are feeling at this moment. It pains me that my fellow Scoopers would mock their prayers as having no merit, their belief that their lost children are with the risen Jesus is a fairy tale and their faith is for the feeble minded.

The Bible is divided into two books: The Old and the New. The two Books are not called mythologies or legends, but testaments and for a reason. They are eyewitness accounts and, in these accounts, even some of the believers were skeptical, Thomas being the most notable who was not convinced of Christ's Resurrection until he saw it for himself. Paul of Tarsus writes a letter to a Christian community in Corinth who was also skeptical of the Resurrection. In that letter he readily admits if Christ is not risen than our faith is in vain and a lie and that he himself is a liar. Then he describes the witness of many others, even a crowd of 500, who saw the risen Christ.

Like any jury we make a judgement as to the veracity of eyewitness testimony. Who would not be skeptical of anyone rising from the dead, but even the skeptics who lived it were convinced. Our faith is rational and not blind, nor is it for the feeble minded.

My faith is as important to me as yours clearly is to you.  It is my bedrock, my guiding light.  I have long held to the tenet that you pray as if everything depends on God, and act as if everything depends on you.   I am not mocking prayer.  I am mocking those who use it as a cliche instead of acting.

Just as Jesus did, in his own way.

My sympathy for your loss. You're right - I can't imagine it.

The rest of your post is an opinion based on your faith, not fact. Also, see tower's eloquent explanation about the "mocking" in this thread.

Jesus and Paul were historical people. Believing in them and what they said / did is rational. Believing that the person Jesus was dead, and then rose from the dead three days later, is irrational.

Not saying it is false. Just that it is unprecedented and against the "rules" of human biology.

My wife lost a son about two years before she and I met. I make no claim whatsoever to understanding your grief, but I have seen the grief of the loss of a child close up.

I think the mayor's words shortly after the shooting were very foolish, even though well meant. He unintentionally insulted the members of the parish by airily dismissing prayers and also set up an easy diversion for the 2nd amendment people who made it all about what they claimed was his mocking prayer rather than having to trot out their usual defense of guns after a school shooting. My guess is that most of the outrage was by evangelicals who believe that the guy in DC was sent by God. I seriously doubt that they ever pray for divine guidance regarding restrictions on guns after a school shooting, so the mayor played right into their hands. Hence the mocking that followed.
Wild horses couldn't drag me into either political party, but for very different reasons.
