when you say "that beautiful city" that could mean multiple cities.

Hell, US expats have moved on to making Lisbon and Portugal as a whole unaffordable by paying double the value for housing.

Fair point.

One would think cities would learn from Vancouver BC, which encouraged citizens of Hong Kong to park their money into real estate in anticipation of Hong Kong losing its independence and turned the city into the most expensive for real estate in the world and completely unaffordable. In my wife's colleague's neighborhood in Burnaby (30+ minutes outside of the city) half of the homes are vacant as they're owned by Chinese citizens. A friend of a friend lives in a high rise downtown where the top eight floors are owned by a single individual from China.

Its not being "destroyed", just flooded and overcrowded by celebrities for this event.  No different than it being flooded to unbearability by cruise ships dumping 10s of thousands of tourists into Venice every day all summer.  Venice has absolutely sucked to visit from May to September for years, this has nothing to do with it.

Its still charming, fascinating, and hypnotizing the rest of the months of the year.  I had a very underwhelming time in Venice 7-8 years ago when I was there in mid June.  But its high on my list of places to return for a fall trip around Thanksgiving in the next few years, also very much want to see a Venezia FC match at their stadium on the tip of the island.

Because it might not be there much longer with rising ocean sea levels?

Spent a day and a half there and it was charming. I didn't feel like I needed any more unless I was going to some of the islands around it.

Maybe then the Dells will be on the shores of Lake Michigan. Win!

For a place that is so massively famous and important in historical European context, Centro storico of Venice, the main island and old town, is only like 5 square KM, about 1.5 times the size of Central Park.  So even just walking, you can easily walk all of it in a pretty short amount of time.  So unless you're going to ALL of the museums and taking your time, that's pretty spot on.  The people I've known who really enjoyed Venice have gotten a nice AirBNB/VRBO, spent a week there, and just lived Venetian life.  Getting coffees and lunch at cafes, going to markets to make meals, etc...  Again, sounds awful in peak season, but seeing a few videos and pictures from a former coworker, who spend Thanksgiving week there 2 years ago, where the streets were sparesly populated around dusk other than people clustered at cafes and restaurants, seemed actually very cool.

Same idea and experience Ive heard from a friend who did something similar in a similar time in Dubrovnik.

You have to crack a few eggs to make an omelet.

You have to admit, ridding the Ducks through 6 foot Lake Michigan waves sounds awesome.
