Crazy that Rory left some meat on the bone in this round.

PGsHeroes32

Dang, if Rory had killshot putting or even just average putting ability he would be up like 6 or 7

He's giving himself a chance every single hole

No doubt.  A 63 was there for him.

Pretty impressive round for Conners all things considered.

If Conners could putt...  talk about leaving meat on the bone.

Alright kids, we got a Sunday

PGsHeroes32

Damn.

All things considered cant bitch about a -6 under moving day.

But Rory left the door open and Bryson slipped his foot in.

3 shot swing in the last 3 holes.

Only down 2

Wow.  Just Wow.  I thought a bogey was in play from the fairway bunker.

Uncle Rico

Wonder what Bryson will serve at dinner next year

Wasn't lost on me watching Rory's isolated walk from 18 to the clubhouse versus Bryson high fiving everyone and anyone.

Quote from: MU82 on April 12, 2025, 11:25:07 AMWhat the hell happened to Jordan Spieth?

A decade ago, he was the best player in the world - won the Masters, U.S. Open, Tour Championship and Hero World; finished second in the PGA; finished 4th in the British. Ranked first, runaway choice for 2015 golfer of the year.

He choked away the 2016 Masters and that affected him for a while, but he did come back to win the 2017 British.

Since then, he's only won two relatively minor events, he's been a non-contender at almost every major, and he has nearly as many missed cuts as top-10s.

He's always seemed to be one who gets in his own head-space on the course. I'm like that, too, so I empathize ... but I've never been the best golfer on the planet. (My top rank was 4th.)

Just a weird fall for a guy who burst onto the scene and accomplished so much at such a young age. Hard to believe he's only 31. Maybe there's still hope, but it was strange listening to the announcers rooting for him to just make the cut yesterday.

Coming back to this.  I think Spieth's mental game has always been his Achilles heel.  And that kind of came into play in a big way.

Not only was Spieth electric early on, he was one of the absolute best, most accomplished Junior players ever.  His amateur accomplishments rank up there with Tiger.  Then he went to Texas and tore it up immediately.  He played really well in the Walker Cup when he was in college too.

Then he turns pro and wins a tournament in the first few months and is the first teenage winner of a PGA tour event in like 80 years.  Then he almost wins his rookie Masters appearance and has 2 wins and 3 other top 3s in his next 5 majors.

At that point, in my opinion, I don't know how you don't have a massive ego as a player.  Its not even arrogance, its just hard fact that from 15-22, you've been borderline untouchable.  So I think the choke in 2016 and subsequent struggles just completely shattered what was a pretty invincible sense of self as a player.  I don't have an deep dive inside information, but I think it would take something super human to not be affected deeply by it.

#120
I don't think it is his ego.  I think it is his game.  When he was winning it was a high wire act.  He did not hit it long or straight.  But he was long enough and kept it in play enough that his short game wizardry could get him over the line.  Think about that sand shot for his first win at the Deere.  Think about the insane bogey from the driving range at the Open.   He was a modern day Seve.
The shelf life for that kind of golf at that level is not particularly long.  He tries to get a little longer off the tee.  He starts missing one more 10 foot par save per round.   He gets married, has a kid, gets hurt.  Now he is trying to get back to the top.  But now he is trying to clean up the old, erratic shots while still having the creativity and touch.  Again, long and straight was never his game before and now he is trying to get there.
Maybe he gets there.  Maybe he fades away except for the occasional flash of brilliance.  Maybe he wins another Open in bad conditions.   But I think that a Seve like descent is also possible.

Things are pretty quiet this morning inside Butler Cabin.  They've got Bryson's jacket laid out for him.  They brought Scottie in this morning to practice putting it on a Bryson mannequin.  Very touching scene to see the prep work
