To our Lobos guests, thank you for the scouting report. You have a good team and we're looking forward to a good game.

We hope you enjoy your one-night stand in Cleveland. It will be quick and painless!

Quote from: TucsonLobo on March 17, 2025, 05:13:35 PMAnother Lobo fan here, been lurking this sub today. This is my first day on the Internet so please don't make any death threats.

The scouting report posted here on Paint Touches is pretty accurate and covers the objective measurements pretty well, so I won't touch on that aspect. Also, I don't know what any of those things mean so I don't worry about them.

This team is all about Donovan Dent, but it rises and falls with Nelly and Tru Washington. Before the loss to Boise last week, we were 10-0 in games that Tru scored 10 or more points. And Nelly is capable of a 20/20 game.

But neither are consistent. Nelly disappears for some games. He also dominates average and below average competition, but struggles against good teams fairly often. It's like he forgets he's 6-10" / 260 lbs and plays like a little kid that's afraid of getting pushed around.

When Tru isn't on, he tries to do too much, and will take a lot of stupid shots, instead of just giving the ball to Dent. But he's our best defender and will likely be guarding Kam.

So for us to win, we need at least an average game from Nelly, and a good game from Tru. Or at least not a bad game from Tru, and one of the other players to step up.

My money would be on our 6th man, guard CJ Noland being the one to do so. He can shoot it from 3 and drive to the basket, and doesn't do many stupid things. Plus he's built like a bulldog.

The other two starters, Amzil and Filip, have been not good recently. They're capable of putting up good numbers, but typically don't. That said, they're solid defenders and add good length. They can both shoot the 3, but are streaky and will take too many when they're off. They also seem to have a possession or two where they try to drive to the hoop and dribble the ball off their knee or something. But overall they're solid and a net positive.

No death threats as long as you don't run into any MU dentists or visit the wasteland that is Milwaukee, welcome

I can't answer this question since I haven't lived in ABQ in 20 some odd years.

But if you're ever in Tucson, check out the Arby's in 22ns St. The Jack in the Box on Mission and Ajo is also worth the trip.

I can already feel my frustration with Marquettes bigs, aka Benny G, stepping way too far out on Dent on the pick and roll while the big man runs straight down the middle for an easy flush...

Please Shaka, for the love of God, do not have the bigs overcommit on that P&R and let Nelly dunk all over our dudes heads.

I'm sure Dent is capable of going off for several 3s, but it seems like staying at home and making them take more outside Js might be the wiser play here in the HC.

How have the Lobos done against a zone this season?

We haven't run into a zone that has given them any trouble, but most teams in the MWC don't play much zone. Utah State runs an obscure matchup zone that gave everyone fits. UNM exposed it and beat them by 19 at their place and set the blueprint on how to beat their zone, by basically just treating it as a Man to Man. San Diego State gave them trouble on the road with high pressure and length all across the board and legit shot blockers. If you can pressure and then pack the paint, it will slow down Dent and Nelly and force the role players to hit shots. That's what a lot of teams have done- some successfully some unsuccessfully.

It's just part of his 5-point plan. Step 1, lure them in and make them feel comfortable....Step 4: Employ Medieval weapons. Step 5: Profit.

I'd be asking how well they've played zone defense.  Their offense doesn't scare me, unless their defense forces the "guardians"  into bad decisions.

So the way I'm reading this, the Lobos scouting report is essentially a Marquette scouting report except for the 3 pt strategy.

Also, God bless the soul of any opposing fan trying to decipher the dysfunction of Scoop...

MU doesn't full out zone very often.  MU will start out showing a 3-2 and then shift into man after the first ball reversal and/or zone cut by the offense.
MU started the season switching 1-5 defensively.  Then teams started playing for it and forcing it.  Think Gold, MU's 5, matched up against Creighton's Ashworth while Kalkbrenner is posting up a guard.  MU has started hedging, helping, recovering more on the screen and roll.
MU is susceptible to teams that aggressively offensive rebound.  Papa Pitino exploited that very well.  MU'S guards are quick and disruptive, but lack the bulk to keep Richmond or Luis Jr. from getting to their spots. Then, when they forced help, the weakside defenders were late to prevent the easy dump offs to Ejiofor.  (Using SJU as they are a common opponent)

MU gets steals from their quick, disruptive guards as well as random traps almost anywhere.  Not called from the bench, all player initiated. Trap the offensive player when he is not expecting it or turns his back.  Jump passing lanes.  9 steals per game in a tough conference that knows they are coming.

Yeah, I think TOs are almost certainly the key to this game - we're not going to keep that big off the glass - I doubt NM has faced much ball pressure like we bring/have in the BE. We're 13-1 when we have 10+ steals - and 8-7 when we have less than 10. If we can bring the violence and get steals I don't think NM has much shot. But if it's a touchy whistle and we get early fouls which forces a dialing back of the pressure if could be a tough game. Dent has a bit of a sloppy handle (3 tos per game- but given high usage). We can get at it
