Quote from: Zog from Margo on March 14, 2025, 08:24:47 PMIt didn't help for sure, but they'd already blown a 15-pt lead. The momentum had swung. I'd say the TOs were bigger issues. Kam's attempted pass to Stevie when Kam had a path to the basket.  Joplin with bad TOs all night and particularly when the momentum turned. The number of 3s attempted with poor results. These were all big factors. MU isn't very athletic or physical and SJU makes them pay.
We agree about the turnovers.  We agree about SJU's relative physicality.  Their defensive ranking is what it is for a reason.

The biggest problem with Jop's offensive game is he's being asked to do things offensively he's not capable of doing. And he's being asked to do them because we have a 2 and a 3 who don't have much offense

Our guys were ready to fight. Just completely overwhelmed physically. Glad no injuries. This wasn't the goal. Next week is what matters.

Match-ups matter.  Hopefully we avoided the 8 line.

I am sure that in a week or 10 days from now, there will be numerous new thread titles about next year's roster, starters, portal stuff, who should leave, etc.
Just wait for then for opinions and buckle your seat belt.....

I have been hard on Ben but lately I saw improvement, but tonight, there center 33 ours not even a shot, hard to believe.  Totally weak, and I do not see much different next year,  Gold and Parham, together, so soft. Offense is offensive, needs to go to Europe as Dan Hurley said on his 60 minutes interview and learn there offense.  Defensively like watching layups and dunks, that double team does not work but Shaka does not change, just man up

I wanna complain the team has forgotten basketball but they came back to beat the good Xavier team. It's sucks bending the knee to these arrogant pitino boys but whatever. On to the "real@ tournament eh?

Kinda buzzed sorry

Strongly believe the BET doesn't matter for us. The ink was already dry on the bracket. If we didn't avoid the 8, it wasn't because of this loss.

Exactly, right?  SJU had 3 points off the bench tonight.  If we had a bench like that, we would be undefeated.

Hopefully we get a bracket full of small teams that can't shoot.

I love Marquette basketball but the chances of this team winning a National Championship are lower than the Pats odds at 28 - 3 down in SB 51.  I guess that means there's a modicum of hope.  Go Warriors!

Quote from: Vander Blue Man Group on March 14, 2025, 08:27:18 PMBen went for 13 and 7 with 2 blocks and 2 steals against St. John's less than a week ago.  Was he good enough that day?

His issues or consistency and confidence.  I'm more than happy to roll with him next season and you should be, too.
cherry picking one game. Ben Gold is a backup getting starter minutes. Off the bench he'd be fine. Starting? Pitino, Hurley, Scheyer, Pearl, Self, Izzo...the top guys don't recruit Ben Gold. At Marquette he starts.

With 5-6 minutes to play, Kam was exhausted. Few if any players in the country have as much responsibility, especially if Joplin and Ross are struggling.

Gold and (especially) Jop were disasters today, there's no sugarcoating it. It happens. I mean, Conwell was a disaster against us TWICE during the season but was almost unstoppable yesterday.

We actually recovered ok after the Ross flagrant - 6 1/2 mins later we were only down by 4 (57-53). But then Zuby took over, we missed a bunch of 3s and FTs, committed a couple dumb TOs ... and it was a rout.

We really didn't play well for most of the last 28 minutes, though. I was encouraged after each of our first two games vs StJ; there was little encouraging about this one.

That doesn't mean I'm packing it in for the season. We've seen this team play really well, including in the second half yesterday.  Like fans of all but maybe a dozen teams that have legit reason to think they can win it all, I hope we can catch lightning in a bottle for a couple/few weeks.

I'm looking forward to seeing who we play next ... and then who we'll play after winning that one!

Yet another game where we get wasted by a big. There are five positions on a basketball team: 2 guards, 2 forwards, and a center. Shaka doesn't seem to realize this. Our "big", a 6'11" stretch 4, has been AWOL in numerous games, including tonight - no shots, no points, and little in the way of defense.

I appreciate the improvement Ben has made in lateral foot speed and defense. He has played well in many games this year. But you CANNOT have games like tonight when there is an absolute void in the middle.

Don't want to get ahead of my skis but with next year's team starting Ben and Chase, you have to think about who's there. At this point Zaide and Royce seem to have the inside track.

But why can't we have a real big? Someone who could deal with situations like tonight. We don't recruit real bigs, we have projects. Hamilton got schooled in his limited time tonight. We also have Clark and AA.

Unless they surprise me, I think next year is a problem.

I think this is exactly right. Jop spreads the floor but only Kam is a threat to score.

He had a rough game to put it mildly.  He also overhelped on penetration a lot.
