Quote from: MU82 on November 06, 2025, 12:07:41 PMHey, it's been a whole year for the Seahawks!

I get into the teams I like. When I moved to Charlotte, I jumped into Panther fandom right away - even though they were awful. But it's not like I grew up a Panthers fan, so it made no sense for me to continue rooting bigly for them after moving 3,000 miles away to Seattle.

Every fan of every team has a time that he or she starts being a fan of that team.

So you're just a sports slut.

KINDA GROSS MAN.

Not universally true - I like the Kraken.

Hawks - personally, can never like after the 2014 NFC Championship game and the following "Fail Mary" game. Way, way over-hyped locally (far more than any other NFL market I have witnessed).

Mariners - They are ok, unless playing the Brewers.

Sonics - I feel the pain of the city losing the team.

I get it though. Sports fandom starts somewhere. I randomly picked Fulham because they had some US based players. More I watched the more I cared and now I'd never pick another club.

I'd still rather the Panthers win than lose. But one of the fun things about following a team when you live in the town is that its success or failure is reflected in the town's mood. That's especially true of the NFL, though Seattle definitely caught Mariners fever this fall. It was fun to be here and witness it, especially after going without MLB for 14 years.

Seattle went without MLB for almost 20 years in the 2000's

This is totally get.  In no world would I ever become a Bucs fan, but living in the TPA area, its fun to watch Baker with a bit more interest, more than just him being one of my favorite players, cause vibes are fun around, especially local businesses and the like, when they are playing well.

Its the same way that I never totally begrudged people for suddenly liking the Cubs when they moved to Chicago, even moreso the bandwagon fandom of the Blackhawks in the early 2010s.  The only time it ever got annoying was when people acted like they were diehard fans forever or blatantly shifted fandom from a team they claimed they had always liked.  I remember during the 2016 World Series run having a coworker who was crying with joy/stress during games...when she had moved to Chicago from SF in 2014.  And another friend who was suddenly a rabid Cubs fan even though she grew up in Detroit and work Tigers stuff all the time when I knew her in college and her early 20s before she moved a few years after graduating.

I don't feel a great need to police fandom, but I can call out when its absurd or embarrassing.

Patriots QB Drake Maye is the midseason NFL MVP, according to Yahoo Sports' Nate Tice. The second-year signal-caller ranks first in dropback success rate, "has shown the ability to push the ball to all areas of the field," and is explosive as both a passer and as a runner.

More Midseason Awards:

OPOY: Jaxon Smith-Njigba, WR (Seahawks)
DPOY: Myles Garrett, Edge (Browns)
OROY: Grey Zabel, G* (Seahawks)
DROY: Abdul Carter, Edge (Giants)
Protector Of The Year: Creed Humphrey, C (Chiefs)
Coach Of The Year: Shane Steichen (Colts)
Asst. Coach Of The Year: Chris Shula, DC (Rams)

Did Pick A Name Out Of a Hat (Packers) win Returner of the Year ?

An interior OL winning OROY would be pretty insane.  I know Zabel has been very very good, but I don't think he has been otherworldly.  PFF certainly doesn't love him.  I feel like the bar is Quenton Nelson's rookie year, but even he didn't win OROY.

Yeah, Zabel has been solid, but I can't imagine any scenario where he wins OROY over Egbuka or Warren if those two continue to play as they have.

Drake Maye as your midseason MVP is proof positive of how dumb midseason awards are.

I like watching the Panthers and seeing Bryce's development.  He's been a winner at every level so far so I can see it happening in the NFL.  Good luck to him.

I'm a big JSN fan, and he's had a tremendous half-season, but of course Taylor should be OPOY - and maybe MVP.

FWIW, the writer did address this:

A lineman as top rookie?! "In a wide open OROY race, I went with a player that deserves as much recognition as possible despite playing a position that will likely never give him the award (but we should, dang it!)," writes Nate. "Grey Zabel was a polished player entering the NFL, but it's still a tough transition from college to the NFL, especially from the FCS level. The North Dakota State product has already played like a good starter, and I would say even at a Pro Bowl level, over the first two months of his career."

Zabel had been good, but he has no chance of winning, so it was silly from that aspect alone. But these exercises are always meant to be conversation pieces ... and here we all are, conversating (as Michael Jordan used to say).

Nate Tice is a former Badger FB player, so we shouldn't expect too much from him.
