Quote from: Scoop Snoop on February 10, 2025, 10:29:53 PMSo you are just blowing smoke when you talk big and tough about recommending mayhem towards our opponents. Kudos for not doing that for a while now. And I'm being serious.

Tomorrow should be an easy win, not a righting of the ship. Righting the ship can begin when we go to Philly and play a team that can give us a game, which DePaul, with 3 guys out, is unlikely to do. And no, I do not count Seton Hall as a team that will test us.

We will probably not really know where the team is until the last 2 games of the BE season.

Unless, of course, we lose the next two. Then we'll know for sure that where we are is not where we want to be.

Thank you for the snarky advice but, as I have often said on this site, I am not foolish enough to spend money gambling on sports.

I do, however, pay some attention to point spreads for what they say about expectations for a game. I have noticed that MU is only 4-9 ATS in conference games and just 1-5 ATS when favored by double digits. They lost one of those games outright and some of the rest of them (including the first DePaul game) were not decided until the final minute.

If I were a gambler I would stay away from games like this because even a blowout win by the favorite does not necessarily mean covering the spread.

With 9 points tonight, Kam Jones would pass Lazar Hayward for third on the all-time Marquette scoring list.

With 35 points tonight, Kam Jones would pass Jerel McNeal for second on the all-time Marquette scoring list.

With 911 points tonight, Kam Jones would pass Markus Howard for first on the all-time Marquette scoring list.

I prefer Kam's achievement of three NCAA tourney wins (so far) to Markus's 2700 points, but that's just me.

Or until the NCAA adopts the 4-point line.  Or the 5-point line...

to bring this full circle, perhaps there should be a mid-range zone where each made basket is worth 5 points.  That would really improve the game.

Or, a dunk/layup is worth 2.  Mid-range worth 3, current 3 is worth 4.

% of the time the offense was really nothing more than an iso for Markus?
% of the time a Wojo team successfully inbounded the basketball?
% of the time Joey stayed on his feet?

No it isn't.

One is transformative. The other isn't!

Kam is a good player, surrounded by other good players, who may or may not lead his team to greatness.

Markus is the all time leading scorer in the Big East, let alone MU.

Kam's story isn't done being written.  At this moment, I will take Markus

First Lowery not being in your starting 5 for next year. Now Howard > kam.

Dang man, we are opposites.

You're comparing a team achievement to an individual achievement. And one in which, at least the two previous seasons, Kam was not the guy driving the bus.

Would the last three years' teams have made the tourney with Markus instead of Kam? I think the answer is pretty obvious.

Would Markus' teams been better with Kam instead of Markus? Not so obvious.

tower912

A career .427 3 point shooter would be useful this season.

Now THATS a thought.  Even if you just take this year's team and do a 1-for-1 swap of Kam for Markus I think the ceiling is higher.  The defense takes a step back, sure, but the offense is a lot more consistent.  You can't zone Markus Howard.  And there are second (Joplin) and third (Chase) and fourth (Stevie, etc) options better than what Markus dealt with, especially his senior year.

Plus the coaching is better under Shaka than it was under Wojo.

Nah. Damarius Owens is a career 45% 3 point shooter and they rarely use him.

If we get a nice comfy lead, I hope Shaka makes Stevie stay out there with the bench players and take open 3's. Maybe if he sees some going in he'd get over the rather obvious reticence we saw last time out and it would help us going forward.
