Not sure who you include in "we", but this is a game that I (and many others) always considered a tossup at best.

It's still very disappointing, though, to see the team completely fall apart after having a 13 point lead early in the second half. It's the kind of performance that raises some serious questions about the team's ceiling.

Quote from: tower912 on December 14, 2024, 08:32:27 PMIMO, rebounding was the negative domino that led to all of the rest of the negative energy.

Effort was the problem. In the second half, they beat us on the boards, they beat us to loose balls, they beat us to key offensive and defensive spots on the floor.

It'll probably never happen because that's college basketball, but I'd love to be able to trust a double digit lead on the road.

They got outscored by 18 in the 2nd half. A good team should never do that.

Oh well, not the end of the world. Just unfortunate.

Lappas really bothers me.  I'm glad the Scoopers echoed my loathing of the guy.  :)

Quote from: WarriorFan on December 14, 2024, 08:38:36 PMThe guys were just flat and definitely could have played better.  Chase was the only one with consistent effort the whole game.  Jop is easier to defend than a 55 year old in rec specs and knee braces.  Just run him off the 3 point line and he'll do one of his aimless drives to nowhere.  Nice to see Lowery back and contributing.

I forget what coach it was - possibly Bobby Knight - who said that every college team will lay an egg once per season, no matter how good they are or could be.  Lets hope this was it for MU.
As an almost 55 year old I am offended by this comment

Had to watch late.  The reasons we lost this game are clear:  lack of defensive focus in 2nd half and lack of effort rebounding. The refs were fine. Play a 2nd half with the intensity of the 1st and we win pretty easily.  Dayton is a good team and they were more focused and out worked us in the 2nd half and that was the ballgame.

After tonight, Marquette has fallen to 9 in KenPom and is projected to finish 24-7 overall, 15-5 in the Big East.

The Sultan

Quote from: Elonsmusk on December 14, 2024, 08:43:59 PMOnce we got taken out of our man defense, the matchup zone we pivoted to limited our aggressiveness, which resulted in Dayton not turning the ball over in the second half.  The zone also challenged our rebounding.

The key to this season will be if Ben can hit that pop 3 at a 40ish percent clip.  His last two in the last minute were good looks and looked good off his hand/on target but neither fell.  He makes either its a tie ball game.

His problem was completely on the defensive end.

Well Dayton gets last laugh, yet again.  We couldn't even beat them with Dwyane Wade on our side.  Time to just throw in the towel and water down the Big East more by adding Dayton and St. Thomas.  The Big East has become an embarrassment anyways with another disastrous non-conference season and early flameouts every March besides one other school not named Marquette.  We've proven time and time again we can't even handle Dayton regardless of who our coach is so I guess we're both mid-majors. Maybe they were the biggest game on our schedule, and not the other way around.  Congrats to Mike Broeker for exposing us as frauds with his "brilliant" scheduling.  Hopefully they'll beat us again next year at home to show they are more Big East worthy than we are.

Sadly, my preseason concerns about this team were exposed tonight.  You can't consistently win without any inside post play and rebounding.  Caeden Hamilton is our only player who is a classic 5 who can score with his back to the basket and rebound.  However it's pretty clear he won't be the answer this year... and he hasn't shown much for me to believe he'll be the answer going forward beyond this year either.

I thought maybe this team might be different and be able to always beat a team they are better than, which last two year's teams couldn't do with constant losses to average Wisconsin teams.  With a ten point lead at half it looked that this team might be different and mentally stronger, however the second half provided all the answers we needed to know about this team.  In short we are not a top 10 team and our ceiling is another Sweet 16... and sadly even that looks unlikely now.
