If you don't understand the reference in the title, consider yourself lucky. But if you want to learn a bit more about why Chase Ross is the heart of MU's violent defense, boy do I have the link for you.

https://painttouches.com/2024/12/09/chase-is-on-the-case-marquette-ross-defense/

Here's a split of MU's numbers with and without Chase on the floor, vs top-100 teams. More context in the article.

Chase's disruptiveness and ability to guard anyone has offset TKo's departure.   Chase is fine on offense, but a force on defense.

Thanks for the analysis. Like Shaka says, Ross is a dude!

Quote from: tower912 on December 09, 2024, 02:09:10 PMChase's disruptiveness and ability to guard anyone has offset TKo's departure.   Chase is fine on offense, but a force on defense.

Chase has improved a ton on offense. His eFG% is up 7.5 points. His assist rate has tripled from 4.8% to 14.5%. And his TO rate has dipped slightly from 14.8% to 12.5%.

A slight uptick in usage from 14.6% to 17.3%.  But a huge boost in O-rating from 103.5 to 125.4.

Even against top 100 opponents, Chase's O-rating is up from 97.0 to 112.8.  Against top 50, it's even better: 91.7 to 115.6.

So, as much as Chase's defense has given us a boost, his offensive improvement has helped Marquette maintain its offensive prowess.

Chase is a beast, and a joy to watch. His next step is with his handle and shooting off the dribble.  If he can be consistent attacking and finishing, he's as dangerous as anyone.

Great article.  Chase is such an amazing athlete.  On that put back attempt it is like he is defying gravity and floating.  I wonder if he missed his calling.  He would be an amazing safety.

Off-day discussion ...

Can a legit argument be made that this year's Kam-Stevie-Chase backcourt is better all-around than last year's TK-Kam-Stevie backcourt?

I'd say yes.

I'd say yes.

Would like to see the efficiency numbers for them. Tough to isolated the variables because one of them has an elite secondary ball handler in Oso.

But Kam was not initiating nearly as many actions as he is this year because so many of them revolved around Kolek and Oso.

Fun to watch the identity of this particular team

wadesworld

Give me both Chase and Stevie over the 4 time BEDPOY winner Kalk.

No drop-off.   Kam is filling TKO's shoes exceptionally well.  Stevie is a little better, so far.  Chase isn't junior year Kam, but his usage and efficiency are both up.  Chase's defense is better than TKo's.

Such a gift to basically be able to shut down a PG and a wing.

That is what is so great about college basketball. And, next year's team will look completely different - which will be great fun as well.

I'd say yes, too. TK was the best PG in MU history and a 1st team AA but Kam and Stevie are much improved and Chase is healthy. What we don't have (yet) is a guard off the bench of Chase's quality. Could be Owens (soon). One of the reasons our guards are so good/improved is the driving lanes are much more open this year because our center has to be guarded away from the basket.

Love TK but he isn't the greatest PG in MU history

I'd contribute to his NIL for that shirt I'd be too bashful to wear in public

There's no telling how differently the UW game might have gone without Ross' contributions, or how his presence might have affected the ISU game.

Retire Terry Rand's jersey!

On the Marquette basketball hour Shaka said his dad was a defensive back at Texas Tech. Makes sense watching Chase play

I'd say it's a legit Q, which seemed crazy to suggest even 40 days ago. Stats through 10 games.

The trend will continue. Adrian Stevens' dad was a DE/LB for Michigan.

This hits home for me. My wife is tired of me telling her that Chase Ross would be a starting safety at most Big 18 schools
