Response seems super muted in the community and elsewhere. The story isn't even on the main page of JSonline.com this morning. There's about 8 Likes on Marquette's original Facebook announcement of the news. I saw they later put out a video and it didn't do much better.

Maybe because he's the acting president and not a new splashy hire? Also seems odd he's about to face a "No Confidence" vote next week: https://www.jsonline.com/story/news/education/2024/11/20/marquette-names-new-president/76456050007/

I don't know anything about the man so I'll reserve judgement. But based on the  announcement and reaction the choice doesn't inspire much confidence.

What does the general public and alumni base really know about an individual named a university president? It's not like there's a ESPN ratings service for candidates. I remember positive comments about Father Pilarz when he was selected and we all know what happened there. Like you, I'll reserve judgment until I see how he performs for our beloved institution.

What is there to say?  The trustees unanimously made their choice.  He has big shoes to fill and big challenges ahead.  Congratulations and good luck.

Facebook likes is the important metric?

Will be interesting to see his religious engagement. I remember one of the big things that was pumped up about Lovell being the first lay president was highlighting his deep faith.

Maybe less of a focus now that they've ripped off the band-aid of non-Jesuit President.

His "religious engagement" was clearly mentioned in the stories about him.

I get the wariness with anyone following Lovell, but let's give the man a chance. I think those calling it a bad hire or DEI need to back off for at least a while until they have evidence.

I think Marquette requires the president to be Catholic correct?

Thanks, I didn't read close enough. I wasn't making a judgement call, just that I remember that being a big part of the search.

I know that you weren't making a judgement call. But I think that a couple of scoopers were too eager to question the hire without evidence supporting their comments.

If he can pass that requirement, he is in.

In completely unrelated news (I assume), the president of Georgetown resigned today.

Apparently he is recovering from a stroke.
Have some patience, FFS.

Maybe that's what caused the stroke.
