For those who followed Marquette sports back in 2005 didn't you think the name change to Gold on 5/5/5 was odd?  The board of trustees (BOT) could not have thought it was a good option.

Well, I thought it was odd and still do.  If my research is correct the backstory will come to light and it will be big news.  Nothing bad - it will be all good for MU.

Is there more than what's out there? That Wayne Sanders offer of $2 million to go back to Warriors was turned down by the University, and that generated about a year of discussion where the Trustees ultimately decided to go with Gold. I think they thought it was a good name. The community disagreed and kept Golden Eagles.

The entire episode was dumb. The fact that a Trustee did this during a commencement speach was even dumber.

Yes it was dumb and the BOT knew it was dumb.  It was done on purpose as part of something bigger.  They had no intention on naming us Gold.

The year was 2005, a year marked by the number five. It was the fifth year of a new millennium, and Marquette University was about to undergo a transformation as significant as the number itself. A group of five enigmatic professors, known as the "Golden Five," had uncovered a hidden truth about the university's history. Deep within the university archives, they found a cryptic manuscript, a five-page document detailing a prophecy.

The prophecy spoke of a time when the university would be reborn, a time marked by the number five. To fulfill this prophecy, the Golden Five proposed a radical idea: a temporary name change to "Gold." This, they believed, would unlock a hidden potential within the university, elevating it to new heights of academic excellence.

The university community was initially skeptical, but the allure of the prophecy and the promise of a brighter future proved irresistible. The name change was implemented, and the campus was awash in gold. Golden banners adorned the buildings, golden robes were worn at graduation, and even the campus squirrels seemed to turn a shade of gold.

However, as the weeks progressed, strange occurrences began to unfold. Students reported vivid dreams, inexplicable bursts of creativity, and a heightened sense of intuition. Some even claimed to have experienced premonitions, a side effect of the university's newfound energy.

The Golden Five realized that the prophecy had been fulfilled, but at a cost. The intense energy unleashed by the name change had begun to destabilize the delicate balance of the universe. To prevent further chaos, they reversed the name change, returning the university to its rightful identity.

The legacy of "Gold" lives on, a mysterious chapter in the history of Marquette University. It is a tale of prophecy, power, and the transformative nature of belief. And though the name may have been short-lived, its impact on the university and its students endures, a testament to the power of five.

Good guess but no.

And if that was a secondary intention it clearly didn't work.  Marquette's acceptance rate is 87% - if you can pay the outrageous tuition you are in.

Current acceptance rates: top 3 Ivy.
----------------------------------
-Harvard:   3%
-Cornell:   4%
-Dartmouth: 6%
-Baylor:   46%  - private, similar ranking to MU
-DePaul:   70%  - private, lower ranking than MU
-Marquette:87%

Many private universities outside the top 50 are getting hit hard as it is difficult to rationalize the increased cost compared to similar state schools where in state tuition can be less than a quarter of the private institutions.

Marquette's acceptance rate is scary but we have a secret bullseye which may come to maturity soon.

I didn't mean to imply that. Just that a guy coming here to portray Marquette's acceptance rate as "scary."

It's fine. Most schools don't really care that much about it any longer. And the only public universities that are generally doing well these days are the flagships. The regionals are facing many of the same enrollment and financial issues that a lot of private schools are facing.

Marquette is absolutely fine. Nice endowment. Strong reputation. Building enrollment on nursing, business, engineering, etc. is exactly where a school wants to be these days.

I will agree that Marquette's status, like many private institutions, is somewhere between fine and scary.  I am a MU grad so I will continue to root for MU on and off the court but the reality is that it may get worse before it gets better.

adding a PA program to the College of Health Studies was a brilliant move on the part of the university leadership. PA is one of the most in-demand programs and occupations these days. It is already rated #27 nationally, tied with Yale, Bucky, Cornell, and Tufts, among others.

I didn't include every program, but yes the PT program is a gem as well. Those are all programs with high student interest and generally have lower discount rates.

It saddens me that the cost of a Marquette education is in the stratosphere. There are many other institutions that offer degrees in nursing, business and engineering at a fraction of the cost and just as valued.
