He doesn't want to coach in it. Players don't want to play in it transfer portal opens tomorrow.

IU announced as soon as the lost in the B10 tourney they would not play in the NIT, ostensibly to focus on recruiting.   So, Pitino is not alone.

I believe you cannot turn down an NCAA invitation after McGuire's move. I do not know the NIT rules.

I know who Maguire is. I just don't understand the reference with regards to Pitino.

Trying to compare Pitino turning down the NIT to Al McGuire turning down the NCAA. Bit of a stretch to say the least.

You can turn it down.  You just can't go to any other tournament instead.

Used to be a good way to keep practicing and gaining tournament experience for the following year.  Now with the portal all these teams will have so many different players it doesn't matter.  Continuity is gone.

The NIT would be advantageous for a school like MU that just misses the NCAA who does anticipate some continuity.

Just expand the field.  Makes all games matter

There are 5 other Big East teams playing in this year's NIT.
It would essentially be a home game for St. John's.
As a fan of MU, I would be very unhappy, if we turned down a bid.
It is a chance to get next year's players more experience. It also gives me more opportunity to watch my players play.

I think if you can guarantee continuation then by all means play and get more experience but if you're graduating a ton of players or expecting to run a bunch of guys of then hit the portal for upgrades then don't bother.
Retire Terry Rand's jersey!

I had that experience as a senior in 1970 when Al turned down not an NIT, but a NCAA bid. The entire campus was in a somber mood. It was awful!

I remember in the Henry Ellenson year, Wojo and co. were *begging* to get in the NIT and still got snubbed.  Those were dark times.

To say the least!!!

Mike Deane tried to talk up making the NIT as an accomplishment that should be celebrated.  Luckily Father Wild and Bill Cords disagreed with him.
