Open 3’s

As much as I admired the MU effort today, I was struck by the number of completely open 3's we gave up. And this was against a team we knew could shoot 3's. In fact, it seems to happen when we're at full strength.
Could a more knowledgeable hoops savant explain why our defensive scheme gives these up?

Just like MU, Creighton does everything to generate them.  Combined with having to help on Kalkbrenner.   It worked for them today.

Yep, and he knew we had to track him the entire baseline while gassed. I know Stevie fell asleep on one, but the play call was smart. 55 made a couple big shots

As a coach, you always have to give up something to a good team. Creighton spreads the floor with good shooters, moves well without the ball, and has a 7-footer with talent to play inside. Someone's gonna be open quite often ... just as we often had open shooters when we were on offense.

Plus, in that last stretch, our guys were pretty exhausted IMHO.

I'm guessing part of the issue:

1. We had 3 of our players out for this game.
2. Two of them are our best 2 players. 
3. One of them a very late scratch.
4. Freshmen with limited minutes and experience had to play more minutes. 
5. Our starters had to play a lot more minutes. 
6. Limited substitutions due to all of the above.
7. Breakneck pace in the first half with very little stoppage time. 

Yea I guess we could have played better defensively.

Over the last month, Gold is 8/32 on 3's (25%). He's getting wide open looks too.

No bueno.

That said, he will continue to log minutes and he will continue to get the open looks, so hopefully over the next month he's 35+% from 3.
In a sample size of 30ish attempts that's
11-12 makes.

I still have a feeling, and I'm not sure why, that Benny will be pressed into heavy action in an elimination game that Oso gets into foul trouble in.
In that game it'll be important that he makes 3+ for Marquette to survive and advance.

I think he has it in him, and more importantly I think Shaka has prepared him and the team well for that moment if it comes, and that's what's most important in the regular season.

Can't have the completely lost deer in headlights on the biggest stage, and Marquette won't have that when Ben steps in.

If MU is going to go deep in the tournament, they Ben did shot much better. That said, yesterday definitely skewed his numbers over the past month, but he needed to make a couple more yesterday and he didn't. That needs to change in a couple of weeks because he is going to get a ton of good looks.

I thought from about the 8 minute mark of the first half til 4 minutes left, they did a good job defending the three. Unfortunately in the last four minutes they were late on some rotations that cost them.  Fatigue definitely played a factor there.

Over the last month, Gold is 8/32 on 3's (25%). He's getting wide open looks too.

Before yesterday, Gold had been shooting 37.1% over his last 10. He had a separate stretch earlier in the season where he shot 42.9% over 11 games. Unfortunately, he has streaks in the middle of even less than the 25% he's shooting over the last month.

He's a streaky shooter. Hopefully he hits another hot streak starting selection Sunday.

From what I've seen MU's D is geared to over pack strong side of the ball, weak side is almost left open. Those responsible for weak side are close to the paint to take away 2's, if they don't closeout the 3's on weak side fast enough, pray. By the end of game they were not getting there leading to wide open 3s.
