His concerns are legitimate though.   The NCAA was ill-prepared to implement NIL in light of the transfer portal and more.   Nothing wrong with student athletes getting paid... but have a plan.  With the transfer portal, and NIL, you ned different rules.  Maybe the athletes who are not getting paid have to adhere to a minimal contract.  There can be parameters around  the contract that includes potential coaching changes etc. But have a plan.

Dickthedribbler

I guess his concerns are legitimate. But it's kind of rich that Rick Pitino is bitching about the NCAA's lack of rules on something.

DoctorV

Losing 5 of 6 will do that.

This ain't Iona Rick!

He did the same thing coaching Panathinaikos in Greece- left the second things got hard.

Did it again coaching the national team for a short stint.

He's great, and I wouldn't be shocked if he figures out a way to take the Johnnies to the EE once before he steps away, but it'll come quick if it ever does because patience is no longer his virtue.

I mean, his stints in Greece were short because he got a chance to coach in the USA.

An old school coach who bitches about the current state of college basketball is probably not going to meet with much success.

Isn't Rick the guy who came into SJU, told all the players but the All Big East one they had to leave, and then used money from his school's billionaire alum to pay all the free agent transfers he wanted?  Have some goddamn self awareness man.

I agree with him. NIL has changes the landscape. It will be haves and have nots. I believe UCONN has the most NIL money in the BE.

There's always been haves and have nots in college athletics.  Never has been a level playing field and never will be.

Also, Pitino is right.  The NCAA screwed the pooch on these issues for decades

Yep. Adherence to the long outdated concept of amateurism has lead to terrible outcomes.

I also don't have a lot of sympathy for coaches who have enriched themselves over the course of the last couple of decades only to now complain about the players wanting $$$.  It's not like many of them were ever voices of reform.

The last part is true.  I think Pitino's larger point is the NCAA is stupid more than looking for pity.

College basketball is a different animal than football but it is interesting to see guys leave head coaching jobs on the football side for assistant jobs, either at the college level or professional level.  Don't think it happens in hoops but if it does...

If it does there will be plenty lined up to take their place.

Jay Wright quit because he didn't like the direction things were going. He was an old school basketball coach and teacher who didn't want to be a Chief Financial Officer.

Pitino should quit as well. Then call Dabo and advise him to quit.

GB Warrior

Maybe Rick could do something if he played in a bigger, more desirable market.

cheebs09

Rick's probably upset NIL has made it a more level playing field. The strippers don't seal the deal for recruits anymore.

He ain't gonna figure out getting them to EE.

Strippers handing out bags of cash might though. Don't let slimeball get that idea.

Did Wright say that?

I'm not doubting that he did, and I wouldn't blame him. I just never heard that.

but if for the bigger good...getting players that can beat Wisconsin...it could be rationalized as justified, I think
