In sort of paraphrasing his comment here, have the players be employees and sign them to 2,3 or4 year contracts (with a non compete clause) with an out if entering the NBA draft. Div 1 would obviously be different and much smaller. Writing is on the wall, especially given court activity?

It's as idiotic as the first time he said it, unless you want to destroy the vast majority of the sport. We'd probably lose 40-60% of the programs in the sport. I know there are some that say good riddance, but the more you professionalize it, the more you lose the pageantry. NCAA basketball isn't great because it's the best product, it's great because of the environments and the energy. Cutting out half the sport will send us to the erosion of those environments. Like the NCAA, these are stupid, short-sighted comments.

At the event last night it was commented that there is a huge difference between "student-athlete" and "employee".  If they becomes "employees", they are no longer "students" then why is the university involved?  It immensely changes everything and is a completely different thing.

Yes, because the one thing professional sports doesn't have is pageantry.

Student athletes can be employees and receive their scholarship plus a stipend. They can be part of a union where a CBA outlines issues like compensation, transfer policy, that's a negotiation between two parties.

And you're right. I don't care one bit if this move means the entire Northeast Conference goes away.

Marquette employs a bunch of students. Marquette employs a bunch of students that receive significant scholarships. (teaching assistants, research assistants) I have no idea why this would be fundamentally different.

Totally straying off topic here (me) but Caitlin is expected to be signed for a base salary of $76,000 with a potential bonus of $5150 if she's the rookie of the year.
