How does this truly benefit him? It's not for some ESPN/FOX segment.  It's not gonna magically get him a new job.  He's not trying to be an assistant for Shaka.  He's further reconnecting with a program that has a huge place in his life.

And that's a largely worthless hypothetical.  Life experience and human growth isn't linear or pre-ordained.  If Al takes the Bucks job there is not 77 Championship and he doesn't have his name all over campus and the culture of the program is completely different.  But he didn't and so he does.

Crean had success and made a TON of money after Marquette even though he didn't make another F4.  It's not like he flamed out within a year or two.  He has plenty of money, has TV gigs if he wants them. It's bizarre to be this cynical 15 years later about something pretty cool that Shaka clearly appreciated...

I agree with this analysis.  Crean may have been off-putting to some, but to deny the impact he made on the program is shallow and petty.  He's always been very complimentary of Marquette.  He left MU for what was perceived to be one of the blue blood jobs/programs in college hoops.  End of the day people were stung when he left because it felt like a big loss at the time.  Buzz stepped in and ultimately proved to be a better coach and the program didn't skip a beat.

Btw, I found the content of Crean's speech to the team to be really good.  Shaka bringing him in to acknowledge his impact on the program and to share his message with the team speaks volumes.

Agreed on everything. But especially the last paragraph.  Shaka is not shying away from this opportunity at all.  He knows he has a final four caliber team and brought in a coach who has done it before at MU.  It was a great message on what could be accomplished THIS year. 

Take the bull by the horns boys!  Let's get this done!

Agree - in high level sports (P5 College and Pro), there are very few coaches that are boy scouts. You have to be somewhat maniacal/insane to be able to deal with all the BS that comes with being a high level coach. TC did not break any recruiting rules at Marquette and took a team to a final 4. Too bad he rubbed some people the wrong way. If you ask the players what they think about TC, they say nothing but the best things about him. TC's job was to resurrect a program and win, not to make every MU fan feel good.

Not to mention Lazar and Cubillion. in Buzz's first two teams Jimmy & DJO were the only two key pieces he brought in (yes I know Fulce was a big recruit but injuries happened)

For better or worse, he was a Big Ten guy and went back when the opportunity arose.

As much as people (including me) have made fun of it, in 2008 there was some legitimacy to the "It's Indiana...it's Indiana" explanation. I don't think Crean was necessarily a "Big Ten guy." It was Indiana.
