you'll always have the mecca

Never been. Buck's has been my pre-game place for awhile now - the limited times I get to games of course.

You seem to know a lot about a place you've never been too. Quite suspicious.

Sultan only makes it to one December game in Milwaukee every other year.

1 Zima enjoyed responsibly because he has important obligations (sitting at his computer) the next morning.

Sir Lawrence

It's a tough business + health concerns.  I'm happy he can sell now.  The new owner got all the right notes.
Ludum habemus.

Never understood why it's been such a beloved place.  A convenient spot very near major basketball and concert venues.  Location is all it had.

Possibly the best collection of bartenders in the city. Pro's pros.

The Paget's ran a tight ship and the entire staff knew what they were doing.

...and their legacy goes back to at least the 70's with campus watering holes.

Never had a problem getting a timely refill. Food was decent. Staff was nice. What else do you need?

Places like Good City and Milwaukee Brewing have nice venues but the service has a lot to be desired in comparison.

You conveniently forgot to mention the Mecca. Is it so far above and beyond in your mind that mention isn't necessary ?

I have to agree with Sultan on the timely refill. There was plenty of positives I can say about BB's, but I often got frustrated with the bar service. Not that they did not have good bartenders, it was more the size of the bar and size of the crowd.

Bars west east (geography not a strength) of the Mississippi scrambling to measure and see who has the longest bar.

While the Brat House directly next door is my primary 3rd Street stop, Buck Bradleys was always a close second. Everything neat and clean, well run. Solid bartenders and crew. In 25+ years I never had a complaint.

One thing I always liked was taking out-of-towners there for the first time. They always were impressed by the loooong narrow bar and the men tending bar wearing long sleeve white shirts and neckties.

Did not know this. Which bars did they have near campus?

Coleman

Always seemed like a spot for the blue hairs. We never went there as students. I have probably been in the bar 3 or 4 times.

I started going to Good Time Charlie's the end of my junior year in high school. Went there often during high school years and had a blast.

In the mid-90s we would go to BBs, they let us in, so we obliged by enjoying a beer or three.

I believe at various times ( 70s and 80s) they owned a couple of spots on State Street near 13th, 14th and 15th. Maybe "Charlies". Names escape me. I did my best drinking on Wells Street.

Really reaching in the memory bank here, but I also think there was a son or a nephew who served as a student manager for Al or Hank.

pbiflyer

Good Time Charlie's and O'Pagets, which was run by Bernie Jr. There was a third near by that escapes me because it wasn't really a student bar.

And a notably beautiful old cream city brick building with a very handsome, gigantic bar/backbar.
The shaka sign, sometimes known as "hang loose", is a gesture of friendly intent often associated with Hawaii and surf culture.
