While I don't think being a consensus No. 1 team on April 5th matters on the court at all, I think embracing the newfound expectations makes way more sense than trying to downplay them.

And I love this visual from Field of 68.

Love this! Thanks for posting.

Great line in your article:

... When some fans were weary of completely buying in to a team that had hurt them most Februaries, losing will hurt no matter how many barriers you put up. If you are using past history and pessimism as your shield, you risk missing out on so much joy.

(I think you meant "wary," not weary, but the point is the same.)

The conclusion's great, too, but I won't spoil it here. Everyone who loves Marquette hoops -- especially those who are willing to be optimists -- should read this article!
"It's not how white men fight." - Tucker Carlson

"Guard against the impostures of pretended patriotism." - George Washington

"In a time of deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act." - George Orwell

I am definitely going to embrace the hype for as long as I can. Hopefully it will be 52 weeks of hype. I feel confident that if a piece needs to be filled, they will not miss a beat.

Love that we'll have a target on our backs instead of being the hunted.  Hope the coaches and players embrace it.

Never wrestle with a pig.  You both get dirty, and the pig likes it.

Is The Sporting News still a thing? I remember reading it on a TWA flight.

A quick analysis of the data shows a lot of interesting things:

1) There is a much stronger consensus about Marquette than any other team in the Top 20. Marquette's average rank was 2.18, but, its standard deviation, or measure of how closely bunched the results were, was 1.18, compared to an average of 3.6 for the other nine Top 10 ranked tjeams.

2) UConn had more "1"s than anyone, with 6, but the Way Too Early Voters had more uncertainty with UConn, as UConn had two voters rank them outside the Top 5. That meant their standard deviation was 3.49, or nearly tripe that of Marquette,

3) The greater degree of certainty about Marquette probably comes from roster stability and the expectation that nine of our team will be back next year.

4) To understand a consensus ranking, we entered the ranking for all 11 voters into a spreadsheet. The ranking was then added up and teams with the lowest score were ranked in aggregate the highest. A "26" was assigned to any team not ranked in the Tpo 25.

5) Among the Way Too Early Voters, they placed three Big East Teams, MU, UConn and Creighton, in the Top 5. The others included were Duke and Purdue.
