From Ben Steeler's game article:

"Frustration boiled over when Smart got a technical foul for arguing with referee Brian O'Connell.

"I don't get a lot of technicals," Smart said. "I'm not a big guy like cursing officials or anything like. But if you're going to give a technical, OK, everyone should get a technical for the same thing.

"My point throughout the year, and we're fortunate to even be in a position to make this point, is if we have a lead, the fouls should be called the same way as if it was tied. It should be no different. And I think any coach would advocate for that same thing."

I apologize if this was discussed elsewhere but from across the court it appeared as though O'Connell egged Shaka on.  There was a heated discussion, Shaka turned around and looked like he was back to coach mode and quite a pause before O'Connell T'd him up.  Perhaps Shaka said something, I couldn't tell.  Seems to me that refs should calm the tension not create it.

I think it was Matt Potter he was getting after. Potter called MU for a few real light touch fouls, then nothing when Ongenda threw a forearm into Kolek when Tyler was driving to the hoop. Shaka was really animated, but stopped as OMax went to the line. Potter barked at Shaka, who looked at him and got the T.

I thought he was gonna get tossed. Easily the hottest I've ever seen him with a referee. I think he and Potter have some beef. That guy called the Butler game last year and did the same thing with the touch fouls on MU.

Shaka was right on the touch fouls on us and some blatant banging no calls on them.   It seems to have been worth it as they called a lot of touch fouls on DP when Kolek was driving to the hoop late in the game.

But yeah.... Call it the same for both teams regardless of score - the refs don't even need to 'know the score!

I try to avoid getting too deep into criticizing the refs. Overall, I think they do a good job. I know, I know- I just committed heresy. With that said, I thought they went overboard on the touch fouls. There is almost constant contact when teams play. Be selective, fair and balanced in what you call.

Absolute power corrupts absolutely. Refs have lots of power.

Don't you know refs hate MU?

There have been several games this year where very few fouls are called in the first half and then they start calling the touch fouls in the second half and complete disrupt the flow and entertainment value of the game.

And it's not that I think MU is usually getting the worst of the calls.

They called a lot of them in favor of Marquette and Tyler in the last few minutes too, much more quickly than I would have expected them to be called

The T seemed odd.   Maybe Shaka deserved it. I don't know.  But to me it appeared that the argument was over, then pause/pause/pause/they were 15 feet away and boom.

Agree.  Has to be a very difficult job reffing a college basketball game.    The challenge is consistency and that is elusive.    Overall, they do a pretty darn good job calling stuff in real time.

Yes..... which really helped us out the game away.  And all after the Shaka technical.   Kolek hit 7 of 8 free throws right?   That was the game .

To me it's like football, you could call holding every single play just as often you could call a hand check/body bump/reach. It would suck if a foul was called all the time, but that leads to inconsistency.
