How good was Trevino?  The more I learn about him the more I like the guy.  Tremendous ball striker.

He won 6 majors going toe to toe with Nicklaus.

Tower,

He had great control of his club face. I get he rerouted the club from outside to inside, but he consistently squared it up.  Very likeable guy..  I guess he was essentially self taught.

Saw Trevino live several times in his prime. He had a complete game . Hit it long enough, control with irons was incredible, could shots, play around green had creativity and was an excellent  putter. Was able to confidently fire at tucked pins and rarely had to putt from distance.

Unfortunately he was struck by lightning in 75 outside Chicago at a tournament, which screwed up his body. Otherwise he may have had even more wins and majors.

Winning 6 against Nicklaus spoke volumes of how great he was . His career on tour started at an older age as well due to his socio economic circumstances.

Oh....wow.  I never heard that lightning story.  He was relatively short Herman.  :)

It was 1975, but yeah. Afterwards he said something like "I should have been holding a 1-iron because even God can't hit that club."

I didn't know he was struck by lightning either.  Trevino's rubber snake prank on Jack was pretty epic!  He would have been fun to play a round with.

I've always heard he was the best ball striker out there.

His Happy Gilmore cameo was great too.

I've been watching some of Mr. Trevino's videos.  Incredible wedge game.  Those bump and runs are a thing of beauty.  He is a master of hitting down on the ball and not flipping.  What a cool dude.  He also was excellent in the Ryder Cup.

Years ago, I went to a clinic Trevino ran. He was all about bump-and-run and also putting from off the green if applicable. His thesis: "For weekend duffers, the closer you can keep the ball to the ground the better."

Has anyone been to a President's Cup?  The fact that it's in Montreal next month doesn't suck.  Very underrated city.

I went to First Presidents Cup which could have been better and more competitive if PGA Tour planned it out more thoughtfully. Unfortunately some of the top internationals like Ernie Els had conflicts

Royal Montreal is a classic course so should be a good event this year .  International Team should be decent as there are some talented Canadian Players who will be pumped  up

I went to Expo 67 World Fair in Montreal when that was a thing . Montreal Was very cool at the time and has only gotten better .

Scheffler hits the ball so well he is rarely in three putt range and puts himself into frequent opportunity to convert birdies . Today was an excellent round where he executed to perfection.

Matsuyama wins in Memphis.   Without his interpreter or regular caddie.   They were all sent home after the bag carrying all of their passports was stolen in London.   Well done.

I'd be curious to hear about how that situation affects the caddies'  cuts of the winnings.

Does the substitute caddie get the same percentage of the winner's share that the regular caddie would have? Does Matsuyama still give his regular caddie some $$$ even though he wasn't on the bag?

It's not "important" (except to the caddies). Just an interesting situation IMHO.

I think it's ridiculous that the FedEx Cup playoffs don't have a regional rotation setup for the first two events (I also think it's silly that East Lake is always the Tour Championship spot).

For the tour to consistently skip Chicago/Wisconsin is silly. One of the first two playoff events should be here each year. Too many worthy courses to name, and golf fans in this region will come out and support, especially before football starts.

tower912

LIV will be staging an event shortly.

Yes, I'm aware they're coming to Bolingbrook. I purposely left them out and think the tour is silly for skipping Chicago/Southeast & Central Wisconsin.

I agree on Chicago or WI hosting a FedEx event. As you mentioned, plenty of worthy courses and the fans do come out in this area. I went down to a number of tournaments in greater Chicago over the years, but it has been quite some time. Regret not going the BMW at Conway Farms because I love that course.

tower912

By the way, dish, I agree about the real tour.  The Midwest gets short changed. I miss the Buick Open birdiefest in Grand Blanc.    Sadly, that is not where the tour is going right now.  The closest is the Deere followed by Jack's place in Ohio.

Isn't the problem that FedEx and Coca-Cola are such large sponsors that they are going to want two of the events in Memphis and Atlanta respectively? That means the only one that is rotated is the BMW, which has been in the Chicago area a few times.

EDIT: I also wonder if the courses in Wisconsin actually WANT to host an event. They only have so many weeks to make money off of golf-tourism right? Shutting down the course for a few weeks doesn't help that.
