Quote from: wadesworld on August 01, 2025, 02:55:18 PMGolfed for about the 3rd time as an adult last weekend.  Went as well as I could've hoped.  Given that someday sooner than later I won't be able to run around and play basketball a couple times a week I figure I'll have to pick up either pickleball or golf, and I think it's going to be golf.  What are people's recommendations on how to get good enough to not just slow the people you're playing with down?  Don't think I'll ever play more than 2-3 times a month during good weather months.

Any recommendations on a set of golf clubs for someone who won't be a serious golfer?
Played summer league lacrosse into my late 20s. Pretty competitive hoop well into my 30s. Told myself when I got old I'd take up golf. Ended up getting a set of Top Flite irons for my 30th birthday as a surprise gift. AirBear woods. Huge mistake. Became obsessed. Been playing 27 years. Currently just under a 7 handicap. While I still play hoop once a week, if given the choice I'd do nothing but golf. Tread carefully. And good luck.

The wind is supposed to kick up at Portcawl.  Miyu and Rio have separated themselves but you never know what could happen if it's a consistent 17-20 mph wind.

When the American players land back in the states, I hope they get the Iraqi soccer team treatment for embarrassing the flag, troops and Jesus

Maybe someone goes low and Miyu stumbles?

Technically I think most of the LPGA women are better than the men.  Beautiful tempo in their swings.  Miyu isn't a bomber, but stripes it about 250 yards while hitting 80% of fairways.  I'd take that.

Women shouldn't play sports, tbh, especially American women.  Declining birth rates and the breakdown of the American family can be directly linked to letting women play sports.

I think you have the right idea but phrased it poorly.   The average male PGA golfer will generally beat the average LPGA golfer due to how far they hit the ball.  LPGA golfers have played in men's events a few times and have failed to make the cut.

However, I think the average shlub sitting at home and watching on a Saturday morning can learn more watching the female professionals play than they can watching the men for the reasons you cited.   Tempo.  Course management when you hit the ball 240-250 off the tee.

And don't ever buy into the utter BS notion that a male 2-handicap can beat an LPGA professional.

Agreed and I don't really think it's debatable.  I play with several 2 range handicaps.  They're nowhere near as good as the LPGA players.  Correct, they hit it farther.  Other than that, the pro women are better at every aspect of the game.  And remember they're playing in front of large crowds.  I finally saw an LPGA event up close last year and was blown away by their accuracy.

Miyu lost focus.

Herm and I played Annika Sorenstam and Karrie Webb in their primes, and we only won by 14. So I hear what you're saying about average schlubs.

Andrea Lee needs to walk up to Miyu on the range and tell her she hasn't forgotten about Pearl Harbor and also say "now I am become death, the destroyer of worlds" and walk away

The wind doesn't look nearly as insane as when Cejka and Harrington played the Senior British Open there in 23.

I respect them all.  I have absolutely no rooting interest today and simply enjoying the seaside golf.

Beautiful course.  I guess to play it you stay in Cardiff?

tower912

That is the nearest city of note.  I am sure there are quaint local inns nearby.

Hull looks really confident right now.  Hopefully, she has a meltdown.

From The Athletic golf writer Gabby Herzig:

Korda's season is basically the epitome of why professional golf is such an endless pursuit. You can win five consecutive titles, and then just a few months later, it can feel impossible to come out on top. But in this sport, the win percentage is miniscule. Looking at Korda's season, I still see five top-seven finishes, including two runner-ups, and zero missed cuts. One hot putting day or a few good bounces could easily have changed how we're discussing her season. Korda is still the best player in the world (I know Lottie Woad is on the rise, but she has a ways to go), and her winless season isn't an indicator of anything to me, other than how difficult it is to achieve excellence in this game.
