I'd be open to having him back. But I think expectations would need to be laid out. And I get the sneaking suspicion he wouldn't like those expectations.

He'll be a solid player for JB's Golden Gophers next year.

Here's a question. If Lewis goes pro would you want Shaka to try to re recruit Dawson?

Nope, hey?

Something has definitely been off with him from a basketball standpoint.  In the last 6 games he's played, he's shooting 6 of 32 from the floor.  Prior to that, he was shooting roughly 50%.  Add in the vague "family illness" and it's not too surprising there's chatter about him leaving.

He had a concussion.

If he quit UNC, and headed home, will probably be a Gopher next season.
Some kids realize being close to home for college has a lot of advantages.
In any regards, appreciate the effort he made for Marquette last season.
His basketball skills would have been welcomed on MUs team this year.

CountryRoads

Hard pass. No interest at all in having him back. No sour grapes about it either. I'd just rather get somebody else.

You dont think Dawson would agree with deferring to Kam Jones, Omax and Joplin next year? HAHA

"Quitters" are troubled losers.

I don't think Al McGuire was a loser

Nah. That was Brian Butch.

Sorry. I just saw someone else made the comment first.

Dawson strikes me a bit of a whiny biotch.  But I also wish him the best.  He's just a kid.

I agree but he recruited him out of HS.

I was just tossing the idea out as would you want Shaka to, not "will he"

Nor in a million years. Unless it was a package deal of Dawson / Joey.

Would never happen in 100 lifetimes but could you imagine the blow up on the board if Joey came back?

He's certainly the most disliked player since I started following the team in 2011.

2 quitters.

I disagree with a lot of posters that we would be a better team with Garcia. This year's team is built on defense, quickness, and hustle. None of those are in Garcia's wheelhouse.

I am glad he left.

GooooMarquette

If it's true that it didn't work out at UNC, it might be an intended consequence of the quick and easy transfer rules that have evolved the past couple of years.

I totally support the right of kids to choose where to go, but allowing immediate eligibility might have made (already impulsive) 18-20 year olds act even more impulsively. And before someone says "yeah, but every other student can transfer as much as they want," remember that "every other student" doesn't have handlers whispering in their ears about NIL values, instant stardom and such. And most can't transfer without worrying about differing tuition costs and such.

Either way, I wish him well, but seriously doubt it will be at MU. He doesn't seem like a guy who would play with Shaka's required defensive intensity.

I'd argue he's the most disliked player ever at MU.  Guys like Maymon and Todd Mayo had their moments somewhat recently, but the way Joey left seemed particularly petty.

I don't think DG would fall into the same category - if he realized he made a mistake going to UNC and wanted to come back to MU, I think Shaka and most fans would be welcoming.

It won't matter.  He won't come back to Marquette nor will Shaka pursue him.

Ya'll are being quite harsh. None of know the circumstances on why he left both Marquette and UNC. Let's wish him the best and hope that if he or his family have issues, the good Lord blesses them and relieves them of their burdens.

Personally, I think he's a great young man who has the same issue as Joey: Great High School Ballplayer who suddenly had to face the next level. In Division I, especially the ACC and the Big East, he faced a "Dawson Garcia" every night. If not that level of talent, someone who knew how to defend him. I'd argue in the Twin Cities South Suburban League, or whatever it's called, he rarely faced talent at his level.

Final thought: In his autobiography, Dean Smith talked about incoming freshmen. He had the same attitude about them Coach McGuire did. He talked about teaching. Most players he coached "got" the offensive end of the game relatively quickly. It was the defense that challenged them. The one exception: Michael Jordan!

Wasn't he in the same league as Holmgren and Suggs?

Nah, has that ever happened in the history of college basketball?

Kevin Marfo transferred from Quinnipiac and was a pretty desired commodity in the transfer market after leading the country in rebounding.  Ended up at A&M.  After a year he transferred back to Quinnipiac for this season

No. Higher up. And played in a better travel league w D1 MN (adidas). Holmgren had to play my team.

I don't disagree with you. I just don't want him back. Best of luck at another school.

He may have the distinction of being the most disliked player at two schools. Not surprising at MU given the combination of high expectations and the perception/reality that he had a big hand in derailing one season down the stretch and bright prospects for the next over an unwarranted sense of entitlement.
