39-1 is still on the table
« on: November 21, 2021, 08:43:42 PM »
1.  St. Bonaventure is a well coached, well oiled machine.    That whole 5 seniors thing can pay off.   Good team.   MU's press was just an invitation to attack.    Played like Villanova.   Their half court defense is what we want MU to play.     So good for them/bad for us that they got to rest their starters.
2.  Transition defense was a huge problem.   Surprising since MU wasn't crashing the offensive boards.    Lots of live ball turnovers.
3.  In the first half, MU was way too willing to keep shooting 3's when they weren't falling.   Again playing into the SBU transition.
4.  SBU either took Morsell out of the game or Morsell took himself out of the game.    Perhaps a reversion to mean.
5.  Other than Lewis, our young guys looked like young guys.
6.  Eventually, MU is going to have to run some sets.   Will probably happen right after they start feeding the post.  Probably not.     Ah, well.  This is who this team is.   SBU was just too disciplined and anticipated all of MU's drives and dishes.
7.  MU has played a lot of good basketball this year.    This wasn't any of it.
8.  There are lessons to be learned even from this.    We lost to a good team on a neutral floor.    Learn the lessons, build from this.   Like it or not, this IS a young team.    There WILL be games like this.    Back into the process.   Or to borrow from Coach Smart, back into the fight.
9.  5-1     Ugly game.    5-1
10.   Hey, MU made to the 50's.
11.   There is going to be bad blood in the handshake line.
Luke 6:45   ...A good man produces goodness from the good in his heart; an evil man produces evil out of his store of evil.   Each man speaks from his heart's abundance...

12. Their coach is trash.

But yeah. Humble pie. Learn from it and move on

The game did not work out the way we hoped it would.

Need to get back into the gym and hopefully come out strong in our next game.

The one tiny positive  was that Emarion Ellis got meaningful experience  against Bona first string   Should help his development and. Motivation to improve.

Kolek, Morsell, Jones and Mitchell were 2 for 21 from field with 11 turnovers.
Kolek and Morsell were 0 for 13.

Anything close to that, like against UCLA and they lose by 40.

Shaka going to cut down rotations soon, most coaches do before conference play.
I hope more Joplin and less O-Max.

Hermie, Ellis is not going to see significant minutes.

Joplin has shown he is a freshman.  That's it.

Should we be worried about Darryl's consistency? Also how are we gonna produce points when its not Darryl? JLew has stepped into that role, but I'd liked to see a nice 3rd option come along like Kam Jones or Kolek. I personally see Kolek as more of spot-up guy compared to Kam as a create-your-own type of guy. I still think that we can make a run for top 4 in the Big East and hopefully get a bid.

Games like this happen, even for good teams. Stuff just doesn't work, and it becomes like a snowball rolling downhill.

We are not good enough to survive horrendous games by Kolek and Morsell. They are too important to everything Shaka wants to do.

Back at it. Kick Northern Illinois' butt on Saturday and get things going again.

Morsell has to step into his role in these types of games. He’s our senior and leader. Needs to find a way to get a basket. We’ll go how he goes.

Thought Kolek and Morsell looked gassed pretty much the whole game.  Yes, they had a day off yesterday, yet 4 high major (I'll give St. Bonnie's High Major status) games in 7 days is a lot.  The full court pressure we apply does add wear and tear.

St. B is legit.  Similar to Buzz's first team when Wes, Rel, Dom were all seniors and Lazar a sophomore.  St. B is the 23rd oldest team in the country.

Wasn't a good night, but it's been a hell of a good week for MU Basketball.

Was very concerned about our young group taking on a squad with all seniors averaging in double figures, and  as we've seen, justifiably so. This was the perfect team to undress our rookies.
Still, the nothing from Morsell is concerning - all this palaver about a senior elder, etc., etc. Not a good look. Kolek, although younger, didn't do any better. Let's hope Stevie can put this night out of his memory. I don't want to see OMax shooting from farther than three feet.

Had to expect some nights like this, and don't think it will be the last. I forget if it was Tower or Brew who said that this team will be fun and frustrating to watch. Tonight was the latter.

On to Northern Illinois.

Was going to post something similar to this yesterday, but didn't want to jinx the team.

Shaka has the lads playing well beyond what I expect from them this year.  They've shown good fight, surprising offensive ability, and cohesiveness that you hope for.

They may take some lumps, but you can tell Shaka takes those personally.  It reflects in the effort of the team.  I still don't know what to expect this year.  But I do expect better results in the following years.

4 games in 1 week against mostly quality competition and even some high level ones. Plus back to back and extended time away from home. Looked like not a physically tired team, but one that was spent.

I was kind of thinking along that line following the current record percentage.
25-5 wouldn't be bad either.
