Hey back in the old days Marquette had usually 2 exhibition games I'm talking 1990's Deane O'Neil eras like Marathon Oil. Does anyone know of any other teams that they played in exhibitions? These were usually ex college players playing for a company.  Im not talking 2000s where they would schedule D2 and D3 teams to play. Let me know if you guys remember any of the other teams like Marathon Oil etc

Russia at midnight.  That was cool.  Though not so much that next morning.

Also, I see Cuba, Chile, Czech, and Polish teams in the 70's.

Yugoslavia in the 80's. Czechs, Russia, Crea of Portugal and Poland in the 90's.

Nike and Wisconsin All Stars in the 00's.

Slightly OT, but my friend snapped a photo of his kids with Oso in downtown Chicago today. Another secret scrimmage or weekend off? Anyone know?

The Sultan

If they are still only allowed a combination of two of secret scrimmages or D3 exhibition games, they wouldn't have a scrimmage scheduled this week.  Probably just a weekend off.

The USSR Olympic Team in the famous 1975 Midnight Special.

Destroyed them. Never knew what hit them.

It was when many of us realized we had something really special.

We played Cuba in 1976 and half the student body came to the game dressed in fatigues as a cigar chomping Fidel Castro.

Great memory!  Wow that would have been cool to be there.
It was a lot of fun for sure.  Had one of those Russians are coming buttons, but lost in in moving over the years.

Why did the NCAA nix games against national teams, AIA, Marathon Oil, etc?
These games were at least entertaining in way a game against a D2 or D3 school is not.

I still have to add more but I've tried to include as many exhibition games as I can find on http://www.muoverload.com if you go to "Team > Schedule (All-Time)".

If you filter the "Game Number" column for "Exhibition" you can see all that have been entered.

Although I am positive I was at this game, I couldn't remember who the Wisconsin All Stars were. Found this recap.

It sure as hell was. One of the best times ever at an MU game, especially given the anger about the 1972 Olympics.

Personally, I can't believe they didn't schedule Wash U. More anti-St. Louis bias.

I believe the biggest issue is some of these teams had relationships with AAU programs, etc. So, a guy may sponsor the exhibition  Team, but also run an AAU program

Colleges schedule the exhibition team and give the guy some bread for them to come play. In return, it helps recruiting.

There was some dirtiness. Squirmy.

Before freshmen could play on the varsity in 1972, the season started with the annual varsity verse freshmen game.

We had some very good freshmen teams and those game were often competitive. Also at that time there were many games where preceding the varsity game, the freshmen wold play.  I still remember a really good game between Marquette and Illinois.
