It has been celebrated by Americans for decades.

The only "suddenly" aspect is it is now officially a Federal observance.

I was ignorant to Juneteenth until a few years ago as well.  I guess I don't understand your question.  When I learned what it was about I certainly understood why it was important to recognize.  I live in a town of about 50k people...just got back from our Juneteenth celebration...our community is about 10% black...thousands turned out throughout the day...very cool event...even the local police were a part.  It was anything but silly.

Same.  It was not something I even thought about.  It is absolutely something that should be celebrated.  I am glad it is a National holiday.  Can't believe it did not get the recognition in my community/upbringing that it deserved (national holiday status) prior to this.   It's really kind of embarrassing.

I watched ~20 minutes of the parade on TV.

I thought it was kinda sad .. broken streets with litter floating around, dilapidated buildings, and the TV shots where .. there were barely any viewers of the parade.

I mean, sure, that makes a statement and shows people the situation, so that's "good" maybe?

Otherwise, seemed kinda depressing.

Ah, since we've got a "well actually" guy going for technically correct I guess we should cancel the whole celebration. Pack it up folks, nevermind on the Juneteenth thing.

tower912

You are technically accurate.    Like most holidays (Christmas, Easter, July 4th) the exact dates are not accurate but have become accepted over time.

In the case of Juneteenth, the celebrations originated in Texas, where the date is accurate.

So what's your point?  That we shouldn't have this as a holiday because it's not 100% historically accurate?
