Wow, that will be interesting with how tied in the university is to the TBT team.

Pretty sure if they did this there's alumni who would be bigger fans of the tbt team than the actual school team

Was way more excited about any game of the tbt last year then the actual team this year.

I don't know...Lewis's tip-in at the buzzer was pretty damn exciting. It was only the sh*tshow that followed that dampened that for me.

In all seriousness, can someone please tell me when the word "warrior" lost ALL affiliation and association with everything but Native American imagery?

This myopic interpretation has always baffled me.

For the most part I was as well. I said what I said because the warriors name though...

It was stated that we had already done too much damage by keeping the native imagery and that they would be forever linked. That's why people say if we changed it back in the 60s or 70s like Golden State then we'd still be the warriors

My kids' high school - which is the Warriors - just announced that they are dropping all Native American imagery. They ran a contest to provide a new design idea. We'll see how it plays out.

Bring back the Warriors, change the mascot from a Native American to a Roman warrior or something like that, and be done with it. Or just bring back the Gold, wtmf.

I understand your point, but the use at MU was dependent upon Native American imagery.  That imagery used to contain a pretty crass stereotype, but at the time of the change MU had gone a long way trying to make it a positive cultural reference.  It was the complete dismissal of the effort to be be educational and respectful of the heritage that always confounded me.

I'm only vaguely aware that we're the Golden Eagles. Marquette doesn't really lean into the mascot/nickname (because it's bland as heck), so whatever change it, don't change it, I don't care anymore.

I think the odds that the university goes back to Warriors even with a non-ethnic-mascot/imagery to be vanishingly small.

But, then again, I thought the odds that they canned Wojo this year were vanishingly small too. So what do I know?

Ardmore Mug

Maybe the $10 mil (?) buyout had a clause in it, to change  back to Warriors ! ! !   8-)

Just so everyone is on the same page, the picture is from our TBT team twitter, not Marquette.

This was exactly my reply when MU sent me a questionaire on the name change. I suggested a Viking or Roman. I agree Warrior doesn't simply imply Native Americans. Hell, a Celt in a kilt would be a hellova mascot! ( definitely going commando)

It's been 27 years since we were the Warriors. 27 years from now, this discussion will be like talking to WWII veterans is today.

It's funny to me that the Fourth Estate keeps referring to us as Warriors, whether the game announcers or like the other day in the Providence paper.
