Recruiting to get a full bench - for decent practices if nothing else

Since Wojo has been coach, I do not believe he has used all his scholarships up per class.  Also, we have heard the excuse that there are not enough quality players available to practice correctly, leading to excuses of poor execution during games?
Why not recruit to at least have a full bench for decent practices when injuries happen?

Walk-ons are good enough for practice, plus you get the flexibility with keeping the scholarship open.

If you're just signing a guy to sign a guy, just grab the walk on.  Then there aren't any uncomfortable conversations later on.

Anybody that's ever been an athlete knows you improve much more in practice than in games.

Saban sells recruits on being elite in the NFL one day because their practices consist of Eddie Jackson guarding Amari Cooper.

I'm sure whoever is guarding Carton in practice is not helping him improve as much a scholarship player would.

What about when guys are tired? It'd be nice to have players step in for the guys who are exhausted all the time

Originally, I thought it was a decent strategy to keep a spot or two open for midseason or end of year transfers. But seeing the same depth issues transpire year after year is frustrating.

I know some may disagree, but this is where I think recruiting the state of Wisconsin is so important. A good relationship with AAU programs and HS coaches in the area can lead to diamonds in the rough being suggested to Wojo as project guys moving forward. Ideally, those guys with ties to the area would have more of an emotional attachment to the school/program and be more inclined to grow from bench roles to contributors over a four year span.

Is there any website that keeps track of how many scholarships a program has out?  I'm guessing most high major programs do not fill all 13 scholarships most years.

If you have a full scholarship table your going to get 3 or 4 kids a year, that will not be to happy.  Not enough playing time, this year out of 10, 2 kids are not ready to play. Luckily, Perez is giving them some minutes. I think 11 is a good number. This upcoming year he might have 13 as some kids might still be not ready.  Plus maybe a transfer, so basically just keep recruiting.

Players transfer/leave every season regardless of how many scholarships are filled. It's hard to defend the strategy when depth has been an issue almost every season.

Depth is always nice to have, this year they have some depth, but finally Wojo woke up and put Koby on the bench. Players do get hurt, Oso was not ready nor is Dex. Perez gives them some of that, glad Wojo decided to play him. To bad there was not a regular early season which would have helped those 3 players. If Lewis was healthy, they would have a 3 man bench which is enough.  I do agree they need 2 better players with experience to come in next year, no senior class really

My point is that not filling out your scholarships because you can get any old walk-on is an even more damaging philosophy than the obvious depth issues it can create.
