The weed thread got me curious on this. If you picked option 4 my question is aren't there several other legal jobs that could damage your mental/physical health as well. Where is the line drawn. Legal prostitution could become an additional tax revenue stream and potentially save lives. Also Freedom? The trade will go on legal or not. Taking it off the black market allows for more tax revenues and makes it safer for all involved. It could be regulated so that all parties would be required to have std tests frequently. If there is a problem police can now get involved. Woman are also free to leave at any point where that might not be the case under a "pimp". Several other modern nations have this and there really isnt a notable issue. Goofy it is illegal in our "free" country. Reality is there just isnt many people who care so it will remain illegal for the foreseeable future. I dont really care either just curious what the board thinks.

Taking it out of the shadows makes it safer and allows focus on illicit behavior and trafficking

Would probably ease the tension on this board.

I prefer the gov't telling me how/when I can get high or get laid.

I'm pretty against it personally. That being said I can't make a full logical argument against it yet.

I chose two and I would imagine most would.  It made me think of a classmate with whom I traveled in Europe. We went our separate ways after two weeks as he was determined to go to Amsterdam and "pay for a hummer" while I was meeting a friend elsewhere. Well, he and his buddy made it to Amsterdam and there was no transaction. As Kant said, we can say how we'd react in a situation but until we're actually in that situation we won't know if we follow through. He said he would and in the end didn't.

I've been various places where it was legal, and honestly it's a refreshingly normal and non-taboo approach to it.  I went through a stroll in the Red Light District in Antwerp with a business associate and his wife after dinner and there were tons of people walking around like you would in any bar district.  I've been to bars in Asia that ended up being "those" kind of bars, that I didn't realize until I was there, that was also pretty relaxed and non-seedy feeling.

It's personally not for me, but I think oversight, standardization, protections, etc... can only help those that will engage in it, beyond potential tax revenue. I've seen it work enough places to know that it could work well here

My POV is, just like weed, if you make it legal 90% of the human suffering associated with it goes away (and you aggressively prosecute the remaining 10%) and we find it's negative impacts our society nominal. I liken both to Tipper and heavy metal.........."It will ruin the fabric of society!!!!!" yet it turns out it's not for the majority but pretty cool if you're into it.

Same here in both Asia and Central Am but for me, every time, the "realization" came immediately after thinking 'Man, I'm on fire tonight. Oh wait a sec.....'

I can't think of a reason why prostitution should be illegal but pornography be legal. Why does taking the extra step of filming a distributing a video en masse make the the act of paying someone to have sex less of an issue?

Back in 1994, myself and two other friends did a Euro trip, 3 nights London, 3 Paris, 3 Amsterdam.  We were glad Amsterdam was the last stop.  I recall walking through the Red Light District.  Transactional is a good description.  We laughed as we'd witness a bunch of guys go down an alleyway and an hour later they'd be streaming out where the next batch streamed in.
